[Metal Gear Solid] Konami remembers it used to make games

Metal Gear Solid is a tactical stealth action series created by Hideo Kojima, you may have heard of it. It has cool characters, great action, varied gameplay, an interesting story, and it's not afraid to have a laugh at itself, or at the viewer. It's fun, it's dumb, it's got long cutscenes, it hits you in the feels, and you probably already know where you stand on the series.

Feel free to talk about the Metal Gear series here. Konami has ruined enough things in general, so if you want to discuss the current evil activities of the La Li Lu Le Lo, I would direct you to the Konami thread.

"Manwiththemachinegun, I want to play Metal Gear! Where should I start! There are a ton of games!"

You can't go wrong with either Metal Gear Solid 1, the first Playstation game, or Metal Gear Solid 3, set in the 1960s as a clear homage to Rambo and James Bond movies. Consider those your gateway drugs.

The list of canonical games and when they are set:

Metal Gear - 1995
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake - 1999
Metal Gear Solid - 2005
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty - 2007-2009
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater - 1964
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - 2014
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops - 1970
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker - 1974
Metal Gear Rising: Revengance 2016 - 2018
Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes - 1975
Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain - 1984

Most games are either playable on PSN, PS3, or PC. If you have some combination of those two, you're probably set.

"So what's the big deal about Metal Gear"

It's a dating Sim,

A sitcom,

A coming of age story,

A Kaiju battle simulator,

And... well, see for yourself

Other recommended material includes the Best Friends Play LP of Metal Gear: Revengeance, where a bunch of grown men nerd out over cyborgs in sombreros and Platinum games in general. And the Hiimdaisy, "Let's destroy!" series, a parody web comic that covered the first three games, and a bit of MGS4.

I really have been in the mood to go back and play Phantom Pain again, but then I think to myself... 'does it really need a second play through?'.

That being said, the story is a bit of a haze to me at this point

If you play on PC there's a ton of mods that increase replayability, most importantly one removes research times from new gear.

This is a great place to say I met David Hayter 2 weeks ago and he was awesome.

He could not have been kinder. I met him and got a picture and he signed my metal gear poster, and then went to one of his panels. His panel was interesting because of COURSE the first like 4 questions were "So what happened are you mad at Kojima?" and eventually he kind of got fed up and said - nicely - he met Kojima 3 times and each time was a handshake and a hello. He has no real ill will towards him, but he was never friends with him ever and doesn't really care. He was saying he used to ask about lines and stuff and every single time Konami/Kojima wouldn't let him change a word. Or even the pacing.

His favorite moment was when Big Boss finds the Mammal Pod in Peace Walker and is demanding answers from it. He had a close 2nd moment but my mind is blanking (I remember it being a genericish answer)

He was shocked when his script for 2 was so thin, and when he realized he wasn't the playable character he was pretty sure the game would tank.

At one moment the moderator said "So Snake is your baby" and he, in Big Boss voice said "But now I have to share custody" and it was genuinely hilarious.

He re-did the whole "But I like being in the box." part and explained how the humor came from him really, genuinely selling that Snake REALLY strongly felt that way. It wasn't a joke to Snake.

He said Randolph originally auditioned for Snake.

I went back to the Con the next day, and had him do a voice recording and he was a total pro and super nice. I was the best man in a wedding, and I told him I wanted Snake to call me in the middle of my speech and interrupt to wish them a happy marriage. He did a few takes and it was SO great.

So all in all, big David Hayter fan and it will always be a great memory.

What perfect timing this thread has. My friend just started streaming his blind playthrough of MGSV. I'm very excited to see his reaction to it, and hope he won't be too disappointed by the, shall we say, low-key ending. I'm pretty sure that seeing him play it will make me want to return to my Mother Base and hang out with Quiet and D-Dog again.

About the only thing I've heard about Death Stranding (kosher to talk about that here?) is that it's going to be open world with vehicles, which makes me hopeful that it will be somewhat similar to MGSV. Very excited to play another game as good as MGSV, but without all the baggage and continuity of the MGS series carries with it.

Even though I would have been very excited by news of an MG1, MG2, MGS1 or MGS2 remake in the Fox Engine, I'm glad the series is finished. Yup. There'll never be another Metal Gear game. Not a single one.

Today is the 30th anniversary of the release of Metal Gear for the MSX. Age hasn't slowed it down one bit. Well, that's only sort of true.

    Happy birthday, Snake!

I'll have to post a really good Metal Gear remix later. The first game didn't have a good OST compared to MG2, but a few aren't bad.

So that Metal Gear Survive thing has an online beta.

Word is the game is fun but really bland and non-Metal Gear.

I mean, I love Metal Gear, but I'm not sure I love THAT.

  • SLyMSLyM Registered User regular
Is that beta on PC or console? Because I decided when they first revealed it I would be willing to pay 5-10 bucks to mess around with the MGSV engine some more, but there's no way I'll pay 40 for it.

So if I can access it I'll get a bit of messing around while I can.

My friend is working on a roguelike game you can play if you want to. (It has free demo)

I tried out the Survive beta on PS4. I was leaning towards getting it, but the beta turned me off to the game. I was prepared for it to not be Metal Gear at all, but it's also not fun. Ammo is severely limited, and melee combat is slow and clunky.

The combat does improve after leveling up, but yeah it's still clunky and it seems to be the focus of the game, because bullets are insanely expensive, and maybe I'm doing something wrong but you have to craft each bullet one at a time.

So yeah, good luck crafting 190 bullets for your AR.

I found the game fun to play, but not "I'm going to buy it fun". It's a bit of a monster hunter feel where you're playing missions to get resources from the environment and using that to improve your gear and level up (you level up with the ingame currency). There's fun secrets around the maps which you get to briefly explore in between waves, like some small walkers we used to almost beat a mission we were underleveled for.

Damn Phantom Pain is still so much fun to play.

I had a prisoner extraction side op go wrong, and after some fierce combat defending the POW, with both gunfire and CQC, I called in Pequod who arced a perfect volley of rockets at the HQ, as I sprinted to safety, blaring "Take On Me".

"That was smooth Boss, real smooth."

I really want to try out the beta, but I don't really feel like deleting and shuffling space.

It's a survival game with levelling mechanics, so limited ammo and being generally weak is to be expected? IDK. Maybe I'll get around to shuffling installs... or not.

Yeah the demo is a bit grindy due to limited access to stuff, so you start out with 14 bullets, and zombies take one or two bullets to be taken down.

  • tastydonutstastydonuts Registered User regular
Does it let you create a merc, or work with presets?

There's character creation. Seems kinda limited, but I suspect that's because it's a beta and there will be more cosmetic options in the full game.

Ok, one thing that makes no sense to me is how I have collected hundreds of materials, but crafting is never an option. The only thing I've figured out is to take a photo of the crafting recipe to then manually add that many items to my inventory so I can craft once I'm in a mission. It's super not intuitive. I truly don't know if I'm doing it wrong or not.

From what I played a while ago, it seems you can't craft stuff on mission with materials you own at "base", you can only craft with what you've collected in that mission.

But if you can grab stuff from the supply box then that is just stupid that you can't use them automatically.

    Satsumomo on
  • FawstFawst The road to awe.Registered User regular
I have never tried to take them from the supply box in-mission. It would be too hectic, especially with no option to select a blueprint and have it automatically pull the items you need.

  • tastydonutstastydonuts Registered User regular
It's interesting. Dunno if it'd be a game I would play long term as the beta suggests a strong co-op play component, but the return gate in purgatory mentions returning to single player, so... could be something for me in it there.

Unfortunately, Konami pulled the plug on an Unreal engine remake of Metal Gear 1.

On the plus side, I bought Snake a tuxedo!

  • FawstFawst The road to awe.Registered User regular
The single player interests me. I haven't played with another person yet, just keep doing a solo one.

  • tastydonutstastydonuts Registered User regular
Will probably play some more later, but I just ran a single mission, I beat the first wave and then started exploring the area and got killed.

I had noticed that despite healing after taking damage during the assault phase and using a medi spray or whatever that the screen still flashed blood? Is there an injury system in the game too? never figured out why and since the time between waves was timed didn't want to waste it poking through menus.

“I used to draw, hard to admit that I used to draw...”
  • SatsumomoSatsumomo Rated PG! Registered User regular
Yes, press options and you should have a prompt to press right on the dpad to heal. There's bleeding which stops health regen, concussions and other types of injuries.

The single player component is the open world with base building, that part seems much more interesting to me.

  • FawstFawst The road to awe.Registered User regular
I think I've only ever had the materials for like four gun turrets total: two manual, two AI. I've used all but one of the AI guns. Doing Wave 1 solo on the normal mode gets far more materials than easy, but I'm still not a fan of the crafting system relying on on-hand materials with no easy way to find/transfer what you need. Fun game, otherwise. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Decided to try out the Survive beta for a laugh.

Think I'm in trouble. Class says "Main Class".

If there's a class/subclass system in this game, I'm fucked. Subclass systems AND a horde mode RPG? Oh nooooo.

I'm not sure, I'm only just getting into the FOB endgame to see if I can get some of the higher grade weapons and armor.

I mentioned earlier that with mods, the Phantom Pain becomes even more amazing. Such as: retaking Mother Base from Cipher:
