In 24 hours all our volunteers leave, and we don't get any more until January 6th. 4 weeks off babysitting. So excited!

Just opened up one of my flash drives and instead of all my stuff it just contains a shortcut. Avast found and removed a virus. I have no idea how it got on there because all I really use this stick for is getting photos from people. And now all my stuff is gone. Fuck everyone who writes viruses.

So, last weekend I complained because the people in charge "forgot" to order food to feed their employees (my area specifically) after a shitload of work. Today I checked my pay stub and apparently they also forgot to record my hours, and pay me. Woo! Let my direct boss know, as well as his boss, and they said it'll get taken care of. If not, heeeere's UNION~!

Shouldn't be a problem though, because people on my shift are generally competent. The ones running the weekend stuff were the Day shifters who are... let's say less than stellar.

Two coworkers from our team out sick. two from the other isle. One of the those was here for a week constantly coughing like he was about to keel over. His team lead is here also coughing, one other lead also here with a cold.

My husband is going for some major surgery later this month, and my boss just pulled me aside and point blank said that she and another supervisor WOULD be making food for us so that we didn't have to cook while he recovered, and I WOULD shut up and take it because they will not accept me trying to say no.

While the contracting company I work for is pretty shit, at least my direct superiors are good people.

Before following any advice, opinions, or thoughts I may have expressed in the above post, be warned: I found Keven Costners "Waterworld" to be a very entertaining film.

as soon as you plug it into a computer that's compromised, most viruses will copy themselves to the flash drive

Email is probably the safest way to exchange files because it doesn't compromise your other stuff in the process

Yeah I've since discovered at least 2 other people have had their drives get screwed. Common element is the laptop we let volunteers use, so clearly one of them has been a fuckhead downloading stuff they shouldn't.

Looks like this flu season is starting early and will be a doozy. Same strain that caused a nasty flu season in Australia's winter, plus the flu vaccine probably isn't very effective, not that people are getting it anyway. There are reports of healthy twenty year olds already dying from the flu, so I guess cytokine storms are brewing.

Well, at least due to the holidays I'll be getting some three day weekends at the end of the month.

The good news is, if you got your flu shot, you are much less likely to die from them.

With the news talking about vaccines being "only 10% effective" those people who haven't gotten it so far probably won't. It's already been busy, and I was denied the request to get a second person working with me once flu season really goes into gear here. Just me, all alone, with dozens of flu tests all day on top of the usual work load, and it's already been busy. Boy oh boy.

Today was pretty exciting - I got to find a pretty massive issue in our billing system.

You know how usually if you sign a 24 month contract for something, like say rent, cable tv or cell service, once you get past the 24 month period they keep billing you but just consider you month to month at that point?

Well, what if instead of that, they just kept you active but decided never to bill you again?

That was apparently our system's business plan (hopefully to be fixed quickly).

For the second time in my six month tenure here at the library, myself and three other people on my shift are in serious trouble due to someone on said shift whiffing it hard on checking books in. This time a patron returned twenty-four books to our front desk book drop; not one of those twenty-four books were checked in, but they were all sensitized and subsequently shelved.

Now it’s pretty generally accepted among the circ staff who the owner of this grand fuck up is, but there’s no real concrete way of showing that this individual is responsible, so as far as our supervisor (who’s been taking flak from the higher-ups for the frequency and scope of just such fuck ups) is concerned, everyone in circ for that day is culpable and going forward, “people are going to start getting written up for this shit,” so, we’re all taking a bite of the shit sandwich for this person and their total lack of a work ethic.

You lead them to the back of the stacks, trap them behind a bookshelf, then you begin shelving books to conceal them behind a wall of literature.

Mostly Edgar Allen Poe works and books about wine.

I think they try to avoid Poe nowadays. Hard to hear yourself think with that ghastly thumping in your ear constantly.

Colleague took a call from a lady reporting her daughter as missing.

The call taker went through the form that ensures we gather all the relevant details so we can identify any vulnerability and so on.

The last question just asks if there's any other information they have, she replied:

"She's just a bit of a twat really"

Please add really slow wipe transitions between each slide. And play a Star Wars related sound, like a lightsaber being lit up, or a TIE fighter flying by.
