What has Pelosi even done, specifically, that Republicans can use her as such a bugbear for their constituents?

Be a powerful liberal woman from San Francisco, where all those gay folks are.

Self-righteousness is incompatible with coalition building.

She was also a huge thorn in George W. Bush's side and that seems to be one of the only things Republicans remember from that era

"fuck you, I'm voting" seems to be happening in Georgia.
About 58 percent of voters cast early ballots during the 2016 presidential election, and 37 percent voted in advance in 2014.

When mailed-in ballots are added to in-person early votes, a total of 129,458 Georgians had already voted through Monday in advance of the Nov. 6 general election, which features the race for governor between Democrat Stacey Abrams and Republican Brian Kemp.

At the same point in the midterm election cycle four years ago, just 46,086 people had voted, according to georgiavotes.com.
On Thursday morning, the state released new numbers that show 296,000 people have voted so far.

Oh shit they Streisand Effect'd voter suppression.

I mean, you would expect a Speaker that is also the same party as the Senate majority and the president to get shit done. But Ryan is a monster and an idiot.

Not all Speakers, or Minority/Majority Leaders, are equal. Ryan is not very competent at holding his coalition together, while McConnel is a force to be reckoned with. IIRC Schumer doesn't get the same results Pelosi does in the senate. Good leaders are a major advantage in congress.

The right runs on fear, and having a high profile boogeyman is crucial to engage their base (unfortunately this doesn't work nearly as well with the left/Democrats) so Pelosi becomes the new target to link to the candidates. Occasionally the right does this to rising stars or people on the left they perceive as a threat nationally, like AOC and Rachel Maddow. IIRC Scott Brown tried to convince his voters that he was literally running against Maddow, it's amusing to see Maddow respond to this in real time on her own show.

Strangely male Dems only seem to get this when they are either running or become president. I don't recall seeing this kind of reaction to Reid or Schumer.

Speaking of GTFVO, I'm doing some GOTV today. Nervous, but this is all "thanks for being a supporter, and for voting! By the way, do you know how you're going to vote, a thing we've both just agreed is definitely happening?"

Not likely to get into any arguments.

I'm worried about how this latest refugee caravan from Central America that's moving through Mexico towards the border is going to impact the midterms. Trump is raising a huge stink about it and it's getting a lot of media coverage over the weekend. This is MAGA stimulant and that's how Republicans win races.

It's blowing up at the perfect time for them, isn't it? Even if something else awful happens that reminds everybody of why the Republicans need to go in the next couple weeks, Trump will still be distracting with the caravan and his people will get out to vote to stop them make themselves feel better.

Yeah, before this Trump was railing against Feinstein for writing an ‘open borders’ bill, even though there was nothing of the sort. It was just a straight up lie not even rooted in an ounce of fact. If it wasn’t this it’d be something else, because fear is literally the only tactic they know.

It's so perfectly timed it makes me wonder if the GOP had something to do with it. That's well into tinfoil hat territory, though.

I mean it is literally just the same thing as last time: the exact same flow of refugees as you would expect to be able to make a horrific trek across thousands of miles, huddled together to protect themselves against any number of terrible things. Not many people made it, and this particular caravan is not in any way a significant uptick from the last dozen.

I remember the thread on the previous one, lots of gnashing of teeth about how can America absorb A THOUSAND people?! And the answer is the same as it was then: easily, about every 5 minutes at every major crossing.

Shitty news sources have done a good job of making it seem like something it is not.

Also! GotV is going well. Lots of walking, lots of folks not actually home. But fun so far!

The ads I'm seeing for Pete Sessions (r) against Colin Allred (d) here in North Texas are more about how awful Pelosi is. And how Allred wants to turn Texas into California.

First, how a district rep in the House will have enough pull to turn Texas into California I'll never know.

Second, as a California expat, I would actually be happy with that sort of result.
