I'd be interested in participating under this ruleset, actually. Ganondorf doesn't like items or Final Smashes but, Hell, no pain no gain, right?
My concern though is that my social anxieties are like "are you sure you want to have to communicate with people for this, trading friend codes and working out who does what"

Items on makes heavy, slow characters even worse than they are and makes fast characters fucking insane.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
My #1 preferred way to play is 4-player ffa, items on low-medium with all the OP and generally annoying ones turned off, no smash balls, all annoying stages (too big, dumb stage hazards) turned off
Luckily my friends all basically feel the same way and agree on what we consider OP/annoying, so it goes pretty well! I'm also garbo though and would never go anywhere near a tournament, so whateeevs
my favorite way to play smash is to bash my head into a wall of nails.

My preferred way of playing is 2v2 standard tourney rules.

Tourneys are gonna be what they're gonna be, I find competitive smash kind of boring personally, but I understand why it is what it is and I don't begrudge it.
Personally, I like:
2v2, or 4-player FFA
3-Stock or Timed-2:30 (either's good IMHO)
The full variety of stages
Items set to Medium
All items except:
The beetle & boss galaga
gust bellows
trap items that arm themselves (such as bob-omb)
smoke bomb
healing items that grant more than 50% in one shot (just the heart container and faerie bottle IIRC)
invincibility star
the weird mushroom that reverses directional inputs
the poison mushroom that shrinks you & the fake smash ball (too hard to distinguish at times)
explosive containers and Zelda chicken (akin to trap items that arm themselves)
I like pokeballs and assist trophies, though I do kind of wish there was Item Switch-style submenus to change their possible outcomes (there's only one or two of each that I'd disable, but it would be a cool feature). I feel like the DK-hammer is fine, but I could take or leave the Golden Hammer. The staff, scythe, and revenge blaster are fun new additions. I miss the paper fan.
Rules:
1. Tournament is double elimination, best of three. Finals (Winners', Losers', and Grand) will be best of five.
2. Matches will be set to three stocks at eight minutes.
3. Items are off; Smash Meters are off.
4. Stage Hazards are set to off.
4. Mii Fighters are allowed.
5. Stage of first match is chosen via stage strike, with the higher seeded player striking first.
6. Subsequent stages are chosen by the loser of the prior match after the winner of said match bans three stages.
7. You may not select a stage that you have previously won on in the set.
8. Seeding will be random for the first few tournaments to get a better idea of player skill.
Stage Legality
Neutral: Final Destination*, Battlefield*, Smashville, Pokemon Stadium, Unova Pokemon League
Counterpick: Wily's Castle, Skyloft, Yoshi's Island, Lylat Cruise, WarioWare, Wuhu Island, Castle Siege, Mushroom Kingdom U, Frigate Orpheon, Brinstar
*Omega and BF configurations are legal, although a player reserves the right to ban any specific stages if the graphical effects interfere with their ability to play.
There’s something about how it vanishes, and the timing of its reappearance. It’s got impeccable comedic timing, because it’s just long enough for an opponent to try to do something else, just before getting Lethal League’d in the face.
i assumed you just had to buy/unlock the alternate costume ones

Guys.
Ridley is really fun and really good.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
I am garbage against master hand with anyone other than Dr. Mario.
I am pretty decent at all other fights - I can get the 4 star spirits on the regular now most of the time. But Master Hand is just super frustrating.

I got near the elite cutoff point on Ridley then I kept rematching a guy and lost a million points cause I wanted to learn the matchup more than I wanted points.

Ain’t nothing wrong with that. Points come and go.

The big reason why I kept going at him was I won the third and fourth fights handidly. And all the other matches aside from the first two were really close.
Also he was a sport and the time I had two really bad deaths due to button mishaps he suicided to keep the stock count even.

I get the occasional dropped input and a little slowdown on occasion but it's much, much better.

Beat Classic Mode with all characters; sadly most of my best runs were not with characters I particularly like (K. Rool reigns supreme as my best effort, Cloud a close third). Though there's a couple characters I usually only play semi-seriously or for fun that actually did really well; Dr. Mario (2nd best), Daisy, Peach, and the Belmonts were all in my top 10. I might have to rethink who my go-to choices are. I've run Corrin twice and only got 'pretty good' results (800k+, 5.8 or so on the mural), unfortunately. Pokemon Trainer was my worst initially, mainly because I kept accidentally killing myself with Squirtle and Charizard's side specials (especially Squirtle's, holy shit), though on a second play-through they landed somewhere in the middle of the pack. Right now Villager, Robin, and Kirby are my bottom three. Which, yeah sure, no surprise to me on Villager since I never play them, and I'm real bad at managing Robin's resource mechanic (which stinks cause I like the character otherwise, though I miss the redhead female Robin palette swap). But I'm gonna have to re-do Kirby because I feel like he should've been a lot better than that.
I kind of wish they'd kept trophies for the playable characters, the 'fighter spirits' kind of suck as a reward, especially without the write-ups. I understand why the larger concept of trophies was ditched as being too resource & time intensive for too little benefit, but you've already got the character models in there for the fighters, and they're prominent enough that I feel like they deserve the time for the little bit of text (yeah translating it for each different localization is another issue, but it's only seventy-some characters, at 1-2 paragraphs each it shouldn't be a big deal compared to how text heavy some video games are nowadays). Ideally the fighters would get a trophy gallery, and the stages would have write-ups you could view somewhere. The spirit stickers are fine for everything else, IMHO.
Beat Classic Mode with all characters; sadly most of my best runs were not with characters I particularly like...
I'm about two thirds of the way through doing this, and found the same thing. Somehow my top five are: Daisy, Pokemon Trainer, Peach, Wolf, and Wario. (Charizard is the only one I actually play).
It doesn't help that I don't have a hang of what the game is looking for in it's scoring. Sm4sh was easy: be quick and diverse. SmUsh seems to want you to wrack up damage on an opponent before finishing them.

I thought they want you to be quick and not take much damage?

But having to, like... go on a new platform... and talk to folks? They're... they're asking a lot of me, here
My first assumption was the latter, but other people seem to assume it's the former.
Haven't previous Nintendo run tournaments had the smash ball on and no other items?
Usually but most invited players ignore them

Ugh.
Do you... do you get them for beating Classic? Like, if I beat Classic Mode as Alph, do I get the Alph spirit?
Ridley is really fun and really good.
You do. Classic gives you the standard fighter spirit regardless of which costume you use.
