I messed around with Royal Guard a bit in the void and now I'm sort of tempted to do a spreadsheet of how much damage every attack does.

Your damage numbers depend on the difficulty. These numbers are on SoS, because that's what I happened to have been playing on and the void uses whatever difficulty you last played.

Release does 180 damage per bar of RG meter. So a bar and a half does 270 and a full meter 1800.

Royal release does normal release damage plus 262.5. If you fuck up the royal release timing and get hit it still adds 75 damage to your release. You can do damage with those even with an empty meter. So doing 10 royal releases without ever guarding does more damage than if you fully charge the meter and then doing 1 royal release. I had assumed that royal release was a damage multiplier, but that is not the case.

Royal Revenge (the back + style button move) does 375 damage and costs 1 bar. So less damage than a 1 bar Royal Release, but if you have a full bar 10 Royal Revenges is better damage for meter than 1 Royal Release.

I wish the Gallery had a list of all the Extra Bonuses you've unlocked (and include a description here so you'd know exactly what each is for). Maybe list the ones you don't have as "????" so you know when you're still missing some, and divide them into three categories: General, Character, and Mission. Could add some replayability for those interested in hunting them down. Maybe give a you a bunch of extra red orbs for finding them all or something.

There has to be at least 50 of these things, but I can only guess at some of them.

A lot of the general ones are easy to figure out. You finished the level quickly, you used devil trigger a lot, you finished a battle at full health, you used enemy step three times, you killed two enemies at once, you never used the shop during the stage, you used an air taunt, you used a ground taunt, etc.

For mission-specific ones, there's stuff like popping all the balloons at the beginning of Mission 2, and several similar ones for destroying specific items in a stage.

There are also a ton of character-specific ones. Dante gets some for never switching styles or weapons, but can also get some for switching to all his styles or weapons. V gets them for never letting his pets die, reading his book a lot, smashing walls with Nightmare, and some I can't identify (ie. Wave Rider seems to be exclusive to him but I have no idea what it is).

They aren't particularly important as they only give you a few hundred red orbs at most, but still enjoying trying to see what does what.

I remember seeing a screenshot of someone's results screen where they got like 70k red orbs from one mission and I really wanted to see the full list of bonuses they got on that. The best I've gotten on the results screen is 40k from one mission.

I'm still not sure I like the change to Gunslinger Ebony & Ivory where it puts the two guns on separate buttons during that. And the buttons are X and B. Stop making me try to figure out new control schemes!

I liked the old version where X was shoot and B was Twosome Time. Though giving the guns different functions may grow on me.

I got Gunslinger and Swordmaster pretty well integrated. Still working on Trickster and Royal Guard. Dante has so many fucking buttons to press and they keep adding more, and more, and more...

It's a bit rough when you're someone who takes well to Nero! All I have to worry about with him is perfecting my execution.

Royal Guard if I just want to block...and well Gunslinger is mostly for style points.

Its insane. Even on DMD if you can make an opening for their most damaging move its going to just chew up those health bars.

So there were four robot arms for Nero in the Deluxe Edition, but apparently if you got the PS4 or Xbox version of the game from the Japanese version of Amazon you got yet another robot arm...

No word on if it will be DLC elsewhere. I don't even know what it does. I guess Nero just goes bananas.

As nice as the void being a thing at all is, there are some things that could be improved. Like, it's just set to whatever difficulty you played last, so to change the difficulty you have to leave the void, load up a mission, leave the mission and go back into the void. That should just be a thing in the menu.

It'd also be nice if in addition to total damage it showed the damage of your last attack and maybe some kind of combo damage.

I tested the difficulties in the void. On every difficulty a Hell Caina has 1000 health and Dante's basic 3-hit sword combo does 360/240/180/120 damage on Human/ Devil Hunter/Son of Sparda/Dante Must Die. So a damage multiplier of 1/0.66/0.5/0.33. Meaning effective enemy health is 1/1.5/2/3.

In conclusion, the jump in enemy health from SOS to DMD is bigger than from DH to SOS.

I haven't tested damage taken because you can't take damage in the void and I'm lazy.

Protip: focus on just two of his melee weapons. The Sparda Sword and either the fists or the nunchaku are all you need to perform well.

Hitting like three things at once with Cavalier and seeing sparks go everywhere and hearing guards break as you keep the combo going is just so satisfying.

The sound, the effects, the animations just make these weapons feel so good to use.

Spoilering some talk about Nero's endgame abilities:
Nero can go forever without touching the ground. Especially since Air Taunts give you height.

Jump > Air Taunt > Second Jump > Air Taunt > Third Jump > Glide > Air Taunt

Throw in the Gerbera to further extend. Can even go get that blue orb that normally requires rocket surfing.

You can also skip some battles. Like when the street slightly collapses and introduces the berserker enemies in Mission 2? Jump over the whole collapsed part. If you never fall into the pit, the berserkers never spawn because you don't trigger their cutscene and get locked in.

Of course, with your handy Devil Bringer back you can just buster them anytime they gain their purple armor and shut them down real quick.

Though I still haven't wrapped my head around the new ghost punch ability he gets, especially since I didn't even realize he had it for a while since the control explanation in the credits goes away too fast. Basically, once he has his Devil Bringer back, Nero now has another rhythm game to juggle in addition to his Exceed meter. Because pressing the Devil Bringer button while locked onto an enemy immediately after hitting them will cause a ghost fist to immediately do a follow-up punch. And you can do that for every single hit of your combo. And if you're in DT then you punch two enemies at once. But if you mistime it then you end up doing Snatch instead.

So juggling that and charging Blue Rose and doing whatever with Breakers is a lot to manage at once.

The cavalier doesn't do enough damage and I don't understand its mechanics well at all.

Most of Cavaliere's attacks spin the wheels on the enemy if it hits, doing damage. No need to hold the button, it does it automatically. This is called Gear Wheel in the skill list and all the attacks that do Gear Wheel say so.
As the wheel spins Cavaliere will start glowing. Do a follow up attack while Cavaliere is glowing to get a stronger attack. Or just as the attack ends for an even stronger attack.
You can switch between the normal and swordmaster combos. You can do stuff like YBY, BBY or YYB and still get the combo finisher.
The followup during Gear Wheel doesn't have to be just a Y or B attack. It can be any Cavaliere attack.

For the most part you can make it through V's missions on lower difficulty just by button spamming. Here's a more detailed breakdown though, if interested:

Griffin is V's gun and Shadow is his melee weapon.

The first time you press the related button will summon the pet if they aren't summoned, but they won't attack until you press it again.

Double-jumping or back-dodging will cancel Griffin's attacks and teleport him to you to carry out that action. Side-dodging will do the same for Shadow. Griffin's back-special also teleports him to you to summon the giant orb of lighting around himself to get any nearby enemies off of you.

One of the triggers spends a block of your DT Gauge to put one of the pets on auto-attack for a limited time (purple glow around their health bar indicates how long). During auto-attack they will use any of their known special attacks.

Shadow has the expected melee attacks (ie. stinger equivalent, high time equivalent). If he's ever doing his spinning jump attack in a bad spot just do a side-dodge to cancel it and call him back to you. Don't spam the attack button if he's not in range as it'll stop him from moving to do the attack.

Griffin's specials (especially charging) are usually better than his rapid fire attack unless you're using it to juggle.

V's cane does do damage (70 damage, according to the Void, compared to the 8 damage a single shot from Griffin does). However, V cannot put enemies into a killable state (though he can get them low enough that a single shot from Griffin will put them in that state so he can finish them off). However, V's cane does not do damage from a teleport, that's only for finishing them off. Also if you've already teleported once but didn't finish off your target, you have to touch the ground before you can teleport again (though stuff like Enemy Step probably resets this).

So if you want V to be in the action you can, but the more ideal way of playing him is to have him back where he can observe the battle and constantly be reading his book or taunting whenever you're not dodging so you can build your DT gauge.

If Griffin or Shadow die, then standing near them will revive them quicker.

Nightmare is invincible, and I believe V is as well when riding him. I think some of Nightmare's attacks can finish off enemies, but that might only be when riding him. Also summoning Nightmare in certain locations will break through walls and reveal secret areas or alternate paths.

((That reminds me, the other night when playing Mission 9 I found a room near the end of the stage that could only be accessed by gliding with Griffin from a certain spot or by using Nightmare to break through a wall. It sealed me in to fight some enemies that burst out of coffins...but there was absolutely no secret in this room that I could find. Just a couple of red orbs. It was odd.))

Anyways, lastly and most importantly, some of V's taunts have him using his cane to mime playing the violin or conducting an orchestra, and the music will actually play. He also tap dances some times. Or just bursts into maniacal laughter while his minions destroy everything.

Some of this I was able to pick up but I'll pull this post up next time I play as V, thanks. I was given the chance to choose and I went Nero because fuck you, V, I LIKE to hit things with swords and not let my familiars do the grunt work, ya lazy bastard.

After beating RE7, RE2 and playing DMCV - I don't like the faces in this engine. They are the wrong side of uncanny valley, they're really well made but they just look disconcerting to me, like looking at those renders of what a real version of Homer or Mario would be.

And Nico is in the running for worst character of the year, currently tied with Owen from Anthem. I didn't have the immediate visceral hate for Nico as I did with Owen but since I'm spending more time with her the skin-crawling horny bait is pushing her to the top. GodDAMN that voice. And her teeth. Jesus, the teeth.

Yeah, they ironically look a lot more real than the RE2make faces, despite being more stylised than them. One spoilery face bugged me, but it has grown on me a lot. (Big ol' spoiler)
Vergil not sharing Dante's face was a bummer, but I guess they didn't wanna rein in their mocap performances, and their respective actors have very different faces to start with.

...actually, not super fond of the change to a black colour scheme either! His EX Colour looks so much better. It's supposed to represent reintegrating V or some such, but now he doesn't mirror Dante. :<

I need to find a good summary of the prequel novel since I've heard some interesting tidbits in it.

Like Nero, Nico, and Kyrie are running an orphanage in their home, and they have a "no swearing" rule in the house. So that's why Nico uses more juvenile insults with Nero (ie. "Up your butt?").

Plus Lucia is in it, and it explains where Dante got the Balrog weapon (apparently Balrog was the new King of the Fire Hell after Dante had killed Berial in DMC4, then Dante defeats Balrog and turns him into the weapon).

On another note, I didn't notice until last night that if you have all three of V's pets out, then all his tattoos disappear. Apparently each pet correspond to certain tattoos and those tattoos will disappear when the pet is summoned.
