I'm not ready to decide I feel about the lack of swapping because I haven't learned the full measure of them, yet
still gotta get better at learning when to super charge or forcibly disengage an arm (that stagger )

Arm switching would defeat the point of em, thematically. It's to give you something player side to have to adapt to. If you were free to swap when convenient, a lot of the risk / reward feeling would go away. Plus the decision to use a regular attack, a breakage or a breakaway all hinge on the fact that they're single use, fragile and non swappable.
Oh brilliant

That doesn't really make sense. That thing about them breaking and being non-swappable being the same thing.
Like you never really have to use the break attacks and in a series where the goal is never to get hit in the first place breakaways are convenient but something you don't want to depend on to begin with.
Also, switching wouldn't really remove the risk/reward of breakage because your arm would still break under the same conditions anyway.

Breakaway would be trivialised if you could swap off the one you need to one you don't, blow that and swap back. As it is you can use it to escape a trap at the cost of losing your good thing. That's a choice ya gotta make.
Take the Buster arm for instance, that's never the first in a lineup for me because it's useless for the majority of the boss fight. I gotta burn through whatever is stocked before it at the moment the boss is staggered. That's a feature, not a bug. If you could swap, I feel like there's no point to a lot of the decisions made regarding the Breakers.
Oh brilliant

But like I just said...you generally don't want to get hit in the first place. So I don't think its as big a deal as you're making it out to be.

It's not for the regular attacks, far as I can tell - it's for those 'first one is free' type traps. The tutorial one being Goliath's vortex - pulls you in and does damage but doesn't cost your Style for the first hit.
I dunno, I got opinions on this I guess. I'm also vehemently opposed to Nero gaining any alternate weapons. ;P
it's one less thing I have to track and switch between - hell, that's the reason I like Nero so much
if I want to be Swappy McSwapper I can play Dante
my use of the devil breaker is reactive, too: I never remember what I have equipped, it's always 'oh hey, I'm using this now' and I like that a bunch

Devil breaker is good but I find myself just buying all punchlines because why bother with anything else

That's kind of my issue. I feel the lack of being able to change them means that most people will just pick the one or two they like most and stock up on them.
Which isn't that big a deal but really reduces the fun factor imo.

I mean, a big part of it is being unable to swap my inventory.
Buying just one gives me consistency at least.

I will never be this good at this game, holy hell. Also, I forget the name but it’s certainly making me think I should buy that sin devil trigger skill that does all the homing missiles.
If I'm going to play this on harder difficulties, I think I'm going to have to spend some time learning how to use royal guard.

Definitely play with it, they made it much easier to use than in previous games. If I understand correctly, the 'perfect' block is now the length of the old basic block, and the new basic block is held whenever you want but it costs DT to take a hit. It's much more welcoming to us mere mortals.

So I own Devil May Cry HD Collection and Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition
The only one I've played (and beaten!) was the first one on the PS2.
I remember the second one being considered pretty awful. Is 3 good? Should I just skip to that? Or 4?
Will replaying 1 again make learning whatever updates they did for 3 and 4 frustrating?
DMC3 is definitely the high point of the first 3 games
4 is also good
1 hasn't aged the best but it's still a lot better than 2, 2 was a bad game even when it was released.

I'd say it's more frustrating to go back to play 1 after playing with the updates from later games.
If you're serious about a franchise playthrough I'd say to play them in release order (either just blast through 2 or skip it entirely), it's the best way to build on the skills you develop without getting pissed about what's not there anymore.
You're all making me want to play Devil May Cry 2. I must experience this myself.

As far as I can tell that recap video didn't even include any DMC2 content
It just goes "so things were pretty quiet for a while here, let's go on to 4"

Its there. Apparently Nico owes her existence to her parents meeting while employed by 2s villian
I have a podcast now. It's about video games and anime!Find it here.
I can see the appeal of being given a certain toolkit and being told to make it work, but not being able to pick your loadout would make it tough to practice with certain ones, which is a large part of the gameplay arc, or it would make the game a noticeably worse experience if there's one that you really don't like using for instance, but too bad, you have to use it anyway.

Give me all your Devil May Cry Opinions plz
4 is also good
1 hasn't aged the best but it's still a lot better than 2, 2 was a bad game even when it was released.
4 has a lot more rough edges, but the core gameplay is still tight and crisp.
No shame if you wanted to just skip to 5 though. It feels designed for that in some ways.

I also just got to do it during the boss of Mission 7 while teamed up with a Nero player. Destruction everywhere and I'm just singing in the rain.
NEVER play Devil May Cry 2.
This has been your public service announcement regarding the dangers of Devil May Cry 2.
I must experience this myself.
Devil May Cry 2 is so bad it gets second billing to the fucking anime in the recap.
Don't say we didn't warn you.

I'm quite positive it did not contain that tidbit
Its fun to have to adapt on the fly to the new one that comes up
Honestly I'd like it if you couldn't even pick which ones you bring with you
The only time the recap gives to 2 is to say “some other bad guys showed up, but it was no big deal.”
At that point why even have different ones?
