The weirdos are living their best life and that’s fine but also generally try to pick hobbies that don’t involve wiggling around next to people’s beating hearts
Fine! I won't become a heart surgeon then!
and I wonder about my neighbors even though I don't have them
but they're listening to every word I say

You horrific fascist tyrant, I am going to sit on this rake just to spite you
I mean we feel comfortable telling people not to smoke, even if they really like it
Maybe we should tax lube companies to fund some TV commercials

The kind of people that become a heart surgeon as a hobby are kind of annoying, to be fair.
I’m watching Anne with an “E” right now and it’s really well done but I have to wonder how much of the constant child abuse was actually a part of the era or just something the show has dialed up for dramatic effect, because it can be harrowing to see with such frequency and ubiquity
A 10-year old gets his face kicked in and robbed by grown adults and the show just plays it like, “Yep, shit was wild back then,”
I haven't read the book recently enough to remember how much of that was accurate to what was written, but definitely some I think ? There was definitely a sense in some of it like there was some vaguely scary stuff that Marilla was keeping from Anne in bits like that.
Well this show doesn’t seem to shy from much
The stuff about Anne’s traumatic past is understandable because it informs her character, but just way people (even adults) are brazenly awful to her is really remarkable and borders on incredulity.
However the show seems to want to specifically focus on Anne enduring a seemingly endless stream of abuses, and it’s starting to feel a bit silly
Like, I’m sure next episode the townsfolk will blame Anne for a tornado blowing down a barn and she’ll have to win them over by building a new barn by herself overnight

Now, this is making think of this as a 1:1 to kind of situation. Where fisting can be totally done in public, and there's a fisting corner or something, and non-fisters are walking by with disgust and disapproval. Everyone can get a fisting break at their job, but sometimes you'll be judged for it. "You know, that can kill you" you hear the familiar and cliched line in an alternate reality TV show, as character watches two friends fisting in the back of a car.

So Howard Stern yesterday played footage from one of his reporters at Fist Fest where the basics are exactly what you would expect. Spoilered for absolutely extreme sex stuff
It was a very large number of dudes, who enjoyed fisting, a lot. Basically based much of their identity around it from their twitter handles to their day to day life. The stuff they were into is EXTREMELY bodily damaging and highly risky. Many of them have prolapses many inches long (one of them over 10 inches)... everyone seemed happy and joyful even as they were discussing stuff where if one person did one thing wrong the person would just die (eg: someone shoulder deep inside another person, inches from their beating heart).
I do marvel at the breadth of the human experience, even if my desire to participate in most of it is less than zero. It was absolutely fascinating to me looking/listening through this window of experience I have no frame of reference for and hearing the happiness of the folks involved.
i definitely feel like my life has immeasurably improved after at some point i can't define i started thinking "those weirdos sure do love doing their weird shit and that is delightful to see them so happy" instead of turning up my nose at things i don't understand or don't have experience with or even just plain don't like
I distinctly remember playing Half-Life 2 on release until like 4-5am and then having to go to a catholic high school retreat in the morning. I was dead to the world but they kept having us sit quietly in meditation so it was like I got to nap all morning, it was great.

Oh everyone being horrible to her, specifically, for looking like she might be Irish and also being an orphan and asking questions all the time is 100% central to the books ! As is her eventually winning the town over
(I am not into fisting and my place in these communities remains ambiguous a total square)

I think a lot of imposter syndrome is a mindset that school is for learning and once you leave, you're supposed to have learned everything and now it's just applying those things. When in reality, the thing you were supposed to learn in school is how to learn, plus maybe a tiny bit of base knowledge.

In general immigration policies in Asia are all about on par with Japan. Japan gets the attention due to its overweight soft power reach and the fact it is the 3rd largest economy in the world but they are not an outlier overall for any East Asian country.
None are immigrant friendly. All have a huge population curve issue just on slightly different timelines (Japan first, Korea and Taiwan are about 10 years behind, China is about 15-20 years behind). None of them want foreign labor. Most are working on instead using automation to make up for the eventual loss of 15-25% of their adult work force over the next 50-75 years. All have huge cultural issues when it comes to working women leading to a huge backlash which is driving up the age of having children and increasing the number of women and men who don't want to be married. And that is just the tip of other issues like NEETs, hikki komori (extreme public anxiety/isolation disorder), and just a general lack of mental health services. The US is a golden land verse most of Asia.
China has an additional burden of having an entire generation of men where they outnumber women to the point where there will be millions who can never ever get married just due to demographics.
And not far behind them on this train will roll India and some of SE Asia.
Japan gets a lot of flack because Americans see the shit more often. No one in Asia really is that far off.
In reality, the US is a shit show but still overall one of the most open and diverse countries with still one of the most pro-immigration legal systems in the world.
