I'm not condoning the actions of Trudeau, like at all.
I really just hate this modern age sometimes, and how seemingly easy it is to defame someone publicly. Again, what Trudeau did was wrong, and he deserves to be scrutinized for his actions because of his stance and position of power, but on the other hand, look how easy it was for this to come up for the public to scrutinize him.
On record, I personally could never enter politics, or become a big celebrity, because I've done shit and it's out there on the internet.
As a wild example, someone has a tindr profile or something, and maybe, nude pics get traded. Someone else now has something on that other person, so if they get famous, there some material. Thing is, who hasn't done something incredibly stupid that might have been recorded or shared with a second party with no regard for how that could bite you in the ass in the future? Everyone's probably got something...
Someone's private life is only private until the media takes interest in you, and then your life is as public as they want it to be.
I think we'll hit a point in the next 10 years or so where politicians were on the internet enough to have done some dumb stuff in public record, and the impact of it will be less, so like, between that and Deep Fakes, nudes aren't exactly going to be shocking
But that's also pretty exclusive of this particular issue; the content was in yearbooks and local rumour, a good reporter with the technology of twenty years ago could have still caught this story, and it would have been pretty debilitating either way
the weird thing about trudeau... seemingly really enjoying being in black/brown face... is that why didn't this show up in the previous election? you'd think opposition research would have used this to stop him from becoming PM in the first place
Thinking about this, I bet Harper completely wrote off the Liberals as being a threat and didn't do much/any oppo on them, instead focusing on Mulcair the the NDP

I saw on the news yesterday or the day before that Trudeau wanted to meet with Singh to apologize over the brownface/blackface incidents
And it's like
Yeah sure thing Justin, use a political rival as a stand-in for the many, many people with marginalized identities who you further marginalized by treating them as a fucking costume, you fool, you utter god damned buffoon, you sheltered pasty chucklefuck who can't get a grasp on the intrinsic moral implications of the casual wielding of your own social power
Ideal would be NDP getting in.
More likely is Liberals getting in with a minority, hopefully after which trudeau would step down, because if he stepped down now and left the liberals without an established leader halfway through the campaign it would guarantee the conservatives get in.
Conservatives getting in is far more likely than I'm happy with.
I'm really hoping for a Liberal minority with NDP holding the balance, which would force the Liberals to actually live up to one or two of their more left-leaning promises, perhaps, and let the NDP get themselves straightened out, hopefully
If Trudeau stepped down to let someone like Chrystia Freeland take over I wouldn't entirely be opposed
The Green Party is a clear winner, obviously, but they explain why. NDP is a bit of a mixed bag, with some ideas lifted essentially from the Liberals, but also some good and ambitious plans. We’re living in the Liberal platform and it’s not great! And they give the conservatives a fair shake, which of course makes them look awful.
I don't super want someone who thinks wifi might be poisoning people to be remotely in charge of policy
She's got good environmental talking points but she doesn't know a ton about the entire rest of federal governance, which is more than a bit key to wielding power effectively
This kind of nonsense even hurts the ACTUAL problems people should worry about regarding wireless technology, namely how 5G will kick weather reporting back down to the 50s.
There’s a lot I admire about the Green Party, and their broader platform is increasingly enticing from a leftist perspective, especially as someone who finds the federal NDP to be so frequently underwhelming. But yeah, there’s some problems. Some with May, and some with it’s more decentralized structure leading to some... questionable candidates.
There’s a lot I want from the NDP, like a more consistently democratic socialist platform, but I think more than anything I see room for improvement on environmental issues.
I’m almost certainly still going to vote for them! But I think we all need to very seriously look at Green’s environmental platform and ask why other parties are offering so much less.
My NDP MP was just handing fliers at the metro station, I just shook his hand and managed a quick “gonna vote for you!” before I ran for my bus that was about to leave.
Also they’re defending in my riding, and the polling is within the error margin, so it makes sense to have boots on the ground here.

Apparently Catherine McKenna’s riding was a close race last election so I hope it tips over to NDP this time around. Unfortunately I live one riding over so I can’t cast a vote against her.
So apparently the whole blackface scandal didn't really move the needle...
I'm of two minds on this? First of all, congratulations for not falling for a terribly hypocritical Conservative ploy, everyone.
But also, we really don't care about racism that much, do we. Justin Trudeau will have a big ol' laugh with Jean-René Dufort about this on the New Year's special, won't he.
the political spectrum in canada right now doesn't have enough policy crossover to really justify moving parties on a scandal (other than those fools who think it does, which is to say, Conservative voters who just don't want to admit they're Conservatives)
so it can't really do much other than like, decreasing liberal turnout due to lack of enthusiasm
It doesn't really affect Liberal policy, and his main opponents are courting white supremacists and neo nazis, so this shouldn't really be a surprising outcome.
I agree with all this, but as much as I hate to say it, I also think there’s a lot of white liberals who like to think they’re against racism, but just don’t get what the big deal with black/brown face is. Like, it’s not good, but it’s also not that racist.
Which is horseshit, obviously. But I just spent a weekend with family/rural voters and that attitude was painfully unanimous. They’ll wag their finger, but they don’t fuckin care because they’re more racist than they realize.

You're absolutely right, instant runoff is also a good option.
I should have worded my post differently. First past the post is undemocratic is what I was trying to say.
Need some stuff designed or printed? I can help with that.
Fuck.

The best way to show politicians we don't accept casual racism is to elect overtly racist officials instead.
Oh for sure

Our riding is weird, it's still Lisa McLeod's (blue) but also turned red last federal election (red)
So who knows!!
