I liked Answer The Call well enough, but that... generation of comedy doesn't really do it for me. It's like, something happens and then the humor is from reacting with lines like "Well, that just happened!" Or some variation of "How awkward?!"
But I'm an old and I recognize that popular culture isn't for me anymore and that's okay. I still don't really get TikTok either. Or YouTube as a job. Or Pitbull.

For me Afterlife just focused on the wrong characters. It should have, IMO, revolved around Leslie Jones.
Afterlife is the new one coming out, Leslie Jones isn't in it. Although if your complaint is that this movie should be about Leslie Jones, I'm not going to argue with you.
Just bring them over in the same manner that James Bond brought over M from the Brosnan Days. Same characters but not, no real explanation just roll with it.

Woops yep. Got the two confused. Also I agree, give me more Leslie Jones. McKinnon can tag along if she wants.
I made a big draft to try and explain myself and clarify that I'm just looking to air out my anxiety at the fandom thing I've steeped myself in, but it wasn't making my case any better. I'll just say it's not my intention to gatekeep, I just could not fully comprehend some of the harsher derision towards the new movie. It helped to put it into words here rather than the more publicly-facing digital soapboxes.
Instead I will wholeheartedly agree that Leslie Jones's Patty Tolan was my favorite character of Ghostbusters Answer the Call and I wish the cheery/enthusiastic MTA employee with an encyclopedic knowledge of New York City history had been more central to the movie than the two former friends who wrote a book together and then had a falling-out over their pursuit of the truth behind the paranormal. It still makes my eye twitch thinking of how people regarded her character as another big, angry, black woman from what I'm assuming was formed from the bit where she slaps the ghost out of Abby in the trailer and the scene she stage-dives and then yells at the crowd for not catching her. She's a big, warm sweetheart for 90% of the rest of that movie.
I had really wanted to see the main cast of ATC get cameos in the new flick the way the original GBs were all featured in ATC. I think it would have been a nice good-will gesture toward fans that feel robbed of more adventures of the 2016 crew.
Did you all know that Sony's oft-forgotten Crackle service now has the whole first "season" of the Real Ghostbusters (where most of the good episodes live) and the first 13 episodes of Extreme Ghostbusters?
I thought Crackle was dead and buried? Maybe only in Canada though. It figures because I was just getting into their offerings and then they pulled it.
EDIT: It lives! I guess this is one of those Barenstein timeline rifts I've read about.
Double EDIT: Nope. Gone in Canada. This teaches me once again to do a full investigation before posting. A lesson I refuse to learn.

Sorry to hear. I know Sony worked out some kind of Netflix and Disney+ deals for their IP in the near future so it'll probably be available again in the next year or two. It's also not that expensive to buy the latest DVD boxset release, though I hear it's missing a handful of episodes.

wrong title notwithstanding, I totally agree with making her the focal character
what's more I wish they'd have leaned harder into her bring a working class nyc native having to help three weird academics who don't know their way around
though tbh I'm someone who always wished winston had more to do in the first movie

Agreed on all counts. Erin and Abby are absolutely hopeless. They ordered PAPA JOHNS PIZZA while living in NEW YORK CITY.
According to the tie-in book, they both grew up in Battle Creek Michigan, but that's still no excuse.
Side thought: I bet if they made an animated series Holtzman would be one of those characters who orders marshmallows on her pizza like a Ninja Turtle.
So at a convention for theater owners recently, Sony showed off the trailer for Spider-Man No Way Home and then a full screening of Ghostbusters Afterlife.

It's ad-supported and thus free to watch.
Actual weird fact:
Crackle is actually owned by Chicken Soup for the Soul.
"A new take on the epic fantasy genre... Darkly comic, relatable characters... twisted storyline."
"Readers who prefer tension and romance, Maledictions: The Offering, delivers... As serious YA fiction, I’ll give it five stars out of five. As a novel? Four and a half." - Liz Ellor My new novel: Maledictions: The Offering. Now in Paperback!

It's no excuse but someone from Michigan moving to New York and ordering Papa John's makes all the sense in the world
Last I’d checked, Sony had been putting up all the Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters on YouTube
They stopped uploading them around end of April/beginning of June for vague reasons, likely having to do with them negotiating streaming rights with Amazon and Disney+ (IIRC those are the platforms they're making deals with).
The episodes they previously uploaded have remained in-place on their channel though, so you can watch 15 chosen episodes of RGB and 10 of XGB there. Some of the best are present in this lineup. The Real Ghostbusters playlist Extreme Ghostbusters playlist
In other news, the movie's release has been moved AGAIN. This time from Novermber 11th to November 18th to fill the void left by Top Gun: Maverick, which moved to next year sometime.
In other, other news, Adam Savage has posted another of his behind-the-scenes looks at Ghostbusters Afterlife where they let him do a loop around the parking lot in the new Ecto-1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VswBDMmMgsU
In a month, on October 8th, Jason Reitman, Ivan Reitman, and some of the cast of 'Ghostbusters Afterlife' will be hosting a panel at New York Comic Con 2021. There they will allegedly show an as-of-yet-unseen clip of the movie and do a Q&A.
I'm not endorsing traveling to the largest, densest city in the world during the Delta variant surge to attend this thing, but I do suspect we'll at least see highlights of it afterwards if it isn't live-streamed.
... Didn't Ghostbusters START the sky beam concept? I mean literally, did any movies have any before Peck shut off the power?
Tron doesn't count, that wasn't real sky.
That very-well might be true and if so I'll rule that they get a pass on it forever then so I don't have to worry anymore.
Saw a similar response on Twitter, which I'll take as a cosign.
God I love these. I want to fund a 50+ episode series run.
Gee. I didn't think anyone was that into Perfect Strangers.

I ordered some Ghostbuster face masks to wear this season when I finally get to suit up again. I then realized that I needed to check my Proton Pack as it has been hanging on the wall in my basement for two years now, unused. Flipped the master switch and was rewarded with that sweet, sweet, start-up noise. I'm so glad the pack's energy cell has a half-life of 5000 years.
Also my pack has developed a serious Ghostbusters II vibe, what with all the dust and cobwebs currently on it.
Worth mentioning here that on Friday at New York Comic Con, the Reitmans screened the entirety of Ghostbusters Afterlife for their panel.
The embargo on reviews has also now lifted.
The decision was very controversial, as many fans are now worried about spoilers between now and release. The North American release is still 6 weeks out while Australia won't see it in theaters until January.
I'm happy for the folks I know who got to check it out and am just gonna have to be quick on the block button on social media so I won't have all the surprises ruined.

One hundred percent agree. Ghostbusters is one of those personal, very meaningful movies, and I couldn't care any less Scott what other people think of it.
At best it'll enter the same pantheon as the others, at worst hey it's more Ghostbusters which is good.
It's a very bizarre choice to wait 32 years to release a new Ghostbusters film and then allow people to see the thing in full only weeks before its wide release.
Nah, they do stuff like this all the time to "reward" fans for showing up to events like this, generates good word of mouth ahead of release usually, unless the film is an absolute bomb, in which case they wouldn't advance screen it.
"Go down, kick ass, and set yourselves up as gods, that's our Prime Directive!"
The most positive thing about it is that it's pretty clear they think they have a hit on their hands, otherwise this would be an incredibly reckless move. I already had a lot of confidence in Jason due largely from hearing him speak in person about it at Fan Fest back in 2019, but this reinforced that the studio is pretty optimistic as well.
I'm not sure how much the potential buzz may improve the box office in the rollercoaster of COVID numbers, but we've got a big drive-in locally and I'm already setting up our premier plans.
The cast has good chemistry so far as well. I like how much Finn Wolfhard boosts up Logan Kim during live interviews and the NYCC panel (it's his first movie ever).
I have it on good authority from someone who has seen the film that the third trailer that's about to release gets kinda spoilery and would likely be best to avoid if you don't like trailers that give away the climax of the movie.

Right now the only accessory I have for it is a PKE meter I found at Spirit Halloween a few years ago. I mean, I have 2 3D printers now....

I guess it was only a summer break after all!
Release posters just dropped.
Domestic (silhouetted from behind)
International (actors' faces showing)
We got another green, swirly vortex and sky-beam but otherwise I really love the domestic poster. I want one.
