Gonna go out on a limb and guess that the issue is that the 'o' in epoch is actually pronounced as a schwa, and people who say it like "epic" either grew up in an area where a schwa sounds like a short 'i,' or they learned how to pronounce "epoch" from someone who did.

...unless your complaint is that they're not saying "ee-pock," in which case I will cling to my incorrect pronunciation

Dear excel folk, I have...an issue. For this assignment I need to take around 200 words and paste them so each letter is separate in Excel so I can do some things to them. I have been doing it in chunks but it is taking FOREVER. Is there a way I can get excel to auto separate this so each letter is a different cell?

i've never used it myself, but it looks like using "=MID($A1, COLUMNS($A$1:A$1), 1)" (replacing A1 with the appropriate starting cell) and then copy/pasting it to the cells to the right for however long you need should do the trick. https://www.extendoffice.com/documents/excel/1697-excel-split-word-into-letters.html

My wife just noticed that a 5G transmitter was installed just outside her office window. It's mounted on top of a streetlight but her office is on the second floor so this thing is probably 10ft from her desk. I know 5G is supposed to be weaker than 4G but that still seems awfully close.

Funny thing is that we discovered you can rent EM radiation detectors fairly cheaply, so she's getting one next week to see how much of a hazard that thing is.

Funny thing is that we discovered you can rent EM radiation detectors fairly cheaply, so she's getting one next week to see how much of a hazard that thing is.

So the good news is that 5G radiation is harmless. Like, to the degree that discovering that it was harmful would require the rewriting of some fairly fundamental laws of physics as we understand them.

There are a lot of articles out there stating otherwise, but much like the supposed link between autism and vaccines, they're all based on a single paper with no experimental basis.

The radio frequencies in the 5G band are as harmless as anything we know about. Like, significantly less harmful than sitting near an incandescent lamp, which at least has the remote astronomical possibility of generating a high-energy particle once in a great while.

The other good news is that every new non-ionizing radio source is still being investigated by the World Health Organization, so if it turns out that 5G does turn out to be hazardous you'll hear it from them first.

Unless the thing is putting out ionizing radiation its most likely not a hazard

5G is bad because it interferes with our weather forecasting systems.

However, like all other wifi bands, it does not cause cancer.

Strokes, if caused by blood clots (the most common cause) can be treated within 6 hours with medication. They can be treated in some patients via invasive procedure within 24 hours, however those procedures aren't done everywhere.

Vacation time go! Finished up some work this evening, and turning off all devices and breaking off all work contact for a week. Feels good

What doesn't feel good is that I experienced what is apparently my first ever migraine today. Stabbing pain in head, stiff neck, ridiculous nausea, can't stop yawning, can't keep eyes open because light hurts, etc.

Nothing like spending 4 hours working on an assignment, realizing I was doing it wrong, spending another 4 hours doing it right, then getting an email from the professor hours before it was due that instead of creating a Random Key Cipher for a 200 word paragraph she meant 200 characters.....cool cool. Super glad I turned that in already after spending so much time.

That is an ocular migraine, a spasming of the optic nerve. I have had them two or three times and I am one of a slim few that has no accompanying pain. Depending on the case, the impairment can be peripheral or central. They are believed to be stress related, so take up meditation or somethin’. They can also dick with the attachment of your retina to the rest of your eye, so you should see an optometrist whenever it’s convenient and have him give your eyeballs a good once over. If the vision impairment doesn’t go away after a minute or two, you likely have a detached retina and need to get your ass to the emergency room so they can laser your retina back on ASAP.

Wow, my contracting job just done me and my team *DIRTY*
Ok, Long story short - Was contracted by a company to help update approx. ~15k systems from win7 to win10 for a hospital conglomerate across ~50 campuses in the Midwest
Project stalls, About 3k can not be updated due to old hardware or proprietary software compatibility issues.
One major piece of software halts the whole process and isn't resolved until Jan. We are just left sitting on our thumbs.
Win7 "Drop dead" date is the Jan 14th. We continue on after New Years, drop dead date comes and goes, we are able to update 800 more systems before we hit another software problem and computer replacement shortages from [MAJOR OEM HERE].
They extend the project till March and want us to replace 50 computers a day. We can't. We have 3 people. A computer takes an hour and a half to image, set up, transfer profiles and then find in the hospitals. We can do maybe 12 on a good day.

Last Thursday we were told to come in at 4:00pm for a new deployment project for "a few hours". This was a major WTF as we were hired M-F 8-4 40 hours a week.
We show up, turns out we were de-facto "let go" from the Win10 project, I was no longer team lead, and now our new job was setting up new IP Phones in construction areas. Oh and we were reduced to 10-15 hours a week with "flexible" (Weekend/second shift/third shift) schedules.

I had two people on my team working paycheck to paycheck, and another who was hired two weeks ago as a Win10 tech, and now he's pulling Cat6. The shittiest thing is that if the project is done... they refuse to lay us off. They just bumped everyone to part time and said we "might" go back to windows 10 later...

So, you guys think I should put in my two weeks tomorrow, or should I wait till I get a lock down on the job offers I've gotten already. (I have about 6 months of savings that I can run on between jobs... Oh and I was told not to come in until Thursday)

Sorry this was a bit of an exaggeration. We could also use paper and pencil but then we would need to take pictures (not scan, pictures) of our work to show it. Also all of our work had to be input into a single word document. I put 278 lines of Excel and broke it up into about 40 pages of screen shots on a Word Document. How is this better then me sending you my Excel workbook?

I don’t know what your state’s rules are for unemployment benefits, but such a drastic reduction in hours could possibly qualify you for unemployment without needing to be specifically laid off, if you did choose to resign as a result. I’d take a look at the specifics.

Honestly the only part of this that isn't, like, straight from the script of "Working as a Contactor in IT: the Book!: the Movie" is the part where they basically can immediately transfer you to another contract, even if only part time. Usually you gotta sit and wait a week or two before they go "hey I found something" so that's actually a big plus for the hospital (like on the side of a building, maybe in red? What was I saying?) that they chose to keep y'all around.

But yeah contract work sucks. I will say that, for me at least, it paid off pretty well after ... 3? ish? years. I mean, I've not got a decent job with alright pay and I'd say reasonably good benefits. So there is that.

Actually, don't meditate, instead try to deal with the sources of the stress, aka the issues that trouble you. Once you've solved them, or at least have a handle on them, you'll be less stressed.

in my case, i have extremely few specific stressors in my life (other than basic stuff like, potential financial instability and general life direction and junk like that) and tend not to really stress out about those things much anyway. and i only get migraines like 2-3 times a year so luckily it hasn't really been an issue.

It is possible you might have a different trigger for this, but it’s not gonna be something you’ll be able to do much about without input from a doctor. If there’s any kind of regularity to ocular migraines, it’s something you should be concerned about and want to have checked out, not the least reason being regular movement of your Optic nerve could potentially loosen your retina up real good.

Problem subordinate implied in end of shift message I gave him a task that required he drop 8 others.

I explained his poor meaning as he in fact was going to drop half of those, but dropped the other half when I limited what he could drop.

    Still, phrasing, dude

Vacation time go! Finished up some work this evening, and turning off all devices and breaking off all work contact for a week. Feels good

What doesn't feel good is that I experienced what is apparently my first ever migraine today. Stabbing pain in head, stiff neck, ridiculous nausea, can't stop yawning, can't keep eyes open because light hurts, etc.

While this is indeed preferable, it is also not always possible.

I guess what I mean is: Don't worry, be helpful to yourself, don't fret about the things you can't control, "be cool, Gurney", etc?
