I've always assumed Kanye was referencing this in Never Let Me Down
I think he was referencing the movie in general, as opposed to that specific line. But the for real best part of that movie was the complete and utter lack of romance in what was supposed to be a loose adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. Like, the have a tepid hug at the end of the movie. That's it.
Racism is how I heard it, like the movie was set up for them to be love interests, but hollywood shriveled at the idea of an asian person and a black woman being romantically linked. Just like Kiss of the Dragon had Jet Li and Bridget Fonda kind of paired up in a way that would imply romantic something, but nothing comes of it for what I assume is the same reason.
I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.
It looks generic as so many movies, but I like Micheal b Jordan so I'm in!
What bugs me the most is that tired trope of "oh, kill the wife of the protagonist so that now he is motivated". Sure, its based on a book - but come on, find some new motivation for your main characters already.
Part of the problem is that people thought John Wick killing thousands of people over a puppy was an anomaly rather than the future of cinematic revenge motivations.
Eh the trope goes back like the length of written history. John Wick was it just sharpened to a fine edge, and even then it was at least interesting in that they killed an animal and not a loved one.
I think John Wick pulls the trick off because the movie is slow to reveal the monster that he is and has be unwittingly unleashed. While the emotional pathos is a man getting revenge for the last vestige of his dead wife and normal life, but the tone is more more like someone solving the Lament Configuration.
John Wick has come to earth to teach them sensations beyond mortal Ken. Sensations of pain.
