You may have noticed a lot of anime avatars suddenly being animated and talking and blinking and waving their arms. These are vtubers, or virtual streamers, or whatever other terms exist for them.
Sometimes they are idols who sing amazingly.

Anyway this is the thread where we post about all this silly shit. In a positive light though; vtubers catch a ridiculous amount of harassment and doxxing attempts, so because of that, I'm gonna have to make that the one rule for this thread - DON'T DO THAT SHIT OR PERPETUATE IT. Not that the last iteration had a problem!

It goes by multiple names. The Microsoft version was (and still is) named just "Mahjong" which is why so many Western people think of it when they hear the name.
Also I'm sure the poll is lacking but I don't much about how many groups there are. I did neglect independent vtubers and that's my bad and I feel bad.
Like a decade ago when I wanted to play Mahjong on my phone finding the actual game in the app store was a pain in the ass cause it was nothing but clones of thr tile matching version.
Blame Japan's shitty idol culture on their slow growth. Things are picking up for them with vtubers becoming popular outside of Japan though.

Hoping the nature of vtubers kills some of the really shitty aspects of the idol industry. There's a decent chunk of media there that doesn't make it outside to the rest of the world because the various idol agencies expect to have a huge amount of control, that no one else wants to give them.
I'm kind of curious to see how much freedom vtubers ultimately get on collabing with vtubers outside their agency. I'm a bit fuzzy on how much they have right now, but seems like independent vtubers are fine. Just that it seems like if they belong to another agency, that it becomes a problem. Then again, I haven't dived too deep into the vtuber hole, so I might have missed something.

Nijisanji allows for collabs between genders freely, though admittedly it took some pressure from the talent leveraging its power as labor

'Blame Japan' is a very lazy way and racially coded to get around the specific failings of cover corp
Cover doesn't block collabs between Hololive and Holostar. The problem is most of the girls got a fanbase that loses their shit if they interact with the opposite gender so they never collab outside of the safety bubble that is Hololive.

Nijisanji definitely skews older and more feminine but has had to deal with the same issues that hololive talent are currently having, notably with suzuhara lulu in the past
This element no longer dominates the nijisanji fan culture largely cause ichikara has taken proactive measures to aggressively protect its talent, something cover has actively refused to do at all turns
It is the same policy that prevents free collaboration between hololive and holostars, whether a hard rule set by management or a soft rule set by complete refusal to take action for fear of endangering capital

And is not for a lack of trying. Kiara set up a Minecraft stream with her character's illustrator, huke. It went down in flames caused by a stream of incel rage. So is difficult for them to host the collab, is easier to just be the guest, like Mori going to the Trash Taste podcast.

I do think there is something to be evaluated in Coco and other hololive talent actively beginning to court the reddit fanbase last year but I think that is a separate issue from cover's unwillingness to protect talent, or at least an ancillary piece of the puzzle
