Ranking of Tekken Endings is pretty great. I do think it's a copout that everything under 30 is "the dump zone" and they don't bother ranking anything down there.
As much as Dan drove me absolutely crazy, he is probably just the shot in the arm GB needs right now.
Yeah. As much as he irritates me, I loved Steal my Sunshine, Burgle my Bananas, and Die Another Friday. Obv Vinny, Alex and Abby being there helped a bunch, but there's a zany spirit to his ideas that GB has def been lacking (and I'd argue was part of their identity for a long time)
Over these years I’ve come to realize that checking is exactly what I need to enjoy Dan and when it’s there, Dan is the best thing about GB. He had it with Jeff/Vinny/Abby. I don’t feel like he has it with Mike and Mary which is why I fell off Fire Escape.
Hopefully this crew can get that balance and if so I think GB is going to be a lot of fun.
I don't keep up with Fire Escape, but the vibe I get is that Mary and Mike absolutely don't rein him in, even when they try/want to, like with the Death Stranding stuff.
Also the vibe I get is that Mike is basically a more muscular Dan, complete with absurd "I could totally fight a large wild animal and win" type takes.
Also the vibe I get is that Mike is basically a more muscular Dan, complete with absurd "I could totally fight a large wild animal and win" type takes.
What weirded me out about Mahardy was when during some GBEast segment, he talked about how when he's out in a bar or sth, he looks at the dudes and in his head imagines if and how he could beat them up
There are aspects of Mike present in Dan, and certainly they share the same enthusiasm for things like Rocky and McGruber, but a lot of their interests really diverge too. Mike goes in for a lot of "talky" games whereas Dan is all about "do-y" and Mike has a lot of Bakalar's (with his fondness for craft beet) enjoyment for finer things like wine, sailboats, and obscure Russian literature. He can come off sounding a bit like Dan's Jeremiah character or an insane character of a person (like Dan himself) depending on what he feels like doing or if he just wants to fuck with someone like Paul Ryckert. He is way more interesting/enteraining than your typical stock IGN/Gamespot personalities by leaps and bounds.
I think Fire Escape works as much as it does because Mike, Dan, and Mary have really great chemistry and each of them can hold their own as individual content creators. As strong as Giant Bomb's current lineup is (although yes, it feels really fucking weird Gerstmann isn't there still), if Mike just by himself could be brought in weighed against any other combination of two people excluding Dan, Jan, or Jeff B., it would be at the very least an even trade (if not something where I would overwhelmingly favor Mike).

I was sold by the time "Banjo Kazuya" started getting bounced around
That Tekken video is great and I'm all for more random one offs and features like that dropping out of nowhere.
And I'm glad Ranking of Fighters got brought up in a way where it seems like that may be coming back. The thought also occurred to me that we may end up with something like Giant Bomb Presents: Smashy Bet! at some point. Hopefully!

Dan has stated that he wants to keep his Twitch and GB stuff completely separate.

Also, we know that Jeff certainly wasn't leaving Giant Bomb because of event pressures mixed with COVID, because he's tweeted a bunch about going in person to the Summer Game Fest re: playing Street Fighter VI on site

Yeah, he specifically spoke of not wanting to go to something like E3 under COVID, I imagine this SF6 event was a lot smaller and had lower attendance.

What is it about Sprite that has made it such a meme drink?
From the photos I've seen that Jeff posted, looks like people were masked up at the very least while playing SF6. Looks like he did a stream of that wrestling battle royale game with Adam Boyes, and then went to the event.
Also, doing Ranking of Fighters without Ben or Jeff feels dirty and wrong.

It’s media and select influencers this time around
Man, one of my favorite things on YouTube is watching people talk over things like E3 and Nintendo Directs.
Having Giant Bomb, Nextlander, AND Jeff for these Xbox Bethesda things is just great. Different dynamics, perspectives, and just all of them getting excited about very different things for different reasons.
Also, man, Dan Ryckert is a CONTENT Machine. It’s not all great, but it all has just an insane amount of energy.

I'm gonna watch Nextlander + Waypoint live, then the other two later while I do other stuff.
man, the twitch chat for JeffG's stream is a lot more "bro" than I can stand I think
There is an element of Gerstmann's growing fanbase that I find increasingly sycophantic to the point of hostility against anyone who aren't the original Giant Bomb cast. I just try to shut it out because just like anime, it ain't the content that's the problem
I have to say that after the news of Jeff leaving last week and the thought of not seeing him not interacting with the crew anymore and all that, things have actually panned out really well. Because really, Gerstmann remaining while always having so little time/sleep and feeling stressed and doing managerial things he had no desire to do is a major bummer to think about. He is clearly pretty happy doing what he is doing now.
And that he immediately put up his own thing like the Nextlander guys and went right at it was a relief as we're still getting plenty of Jeff in his element for some time. But unlike Nextlander where I really like 66.6 percent of those involved (and ultimately the other 33.3 percent is a dealbreaker), I love 100 percent of those involved in the Jeff Gerstmann Show.
Then back to Giant Bomb, the very next day and there was no longer any worry. Dan Ryckert is fucking back and already making everything since the announcement that he is back that he has touched a blast! As much as Gerstmann toiled under the corporate tedium of Red Ventures Dan (its been revealed now) was doing the same for what is really just an all around shit organization.
Plus, if one (other) person can carry on something on his own, its Jeff. He has already had a special guest too and I'm sure he will have plenty to come. And his exit lined up with the only person to leave Giant Bomb before last week that I really followed while away from the site. Dan's Twitch hijinks were great and I got into both Panning The Stream and Fire Escape. He put in the work to do a lot of dumb and entertaining stuff and I was there for it. The weird departure of the co creator of Giant Bomb aside, the best content creator is back and it seems like everyone is doing what they want to be doing and exactly where they want to be. I'm happy not only for them, but also with the results.
According to some people on the NextLander subreddit, the NextLander crew is well aware that people want them and Jeff to work or do something together, but there are no plans for that right now. I assume they want to extend the same courtesy to Jeff that was extended to them, which was being allowed to discover their own identity and voice outside GB.
There was also a gag on the Summer Games Fest stream where Vinny was streaming the Waypoint, Jeff Gerstmann, and Giant Bomb streams at the same time and saying they knew a lot of their viewers were probably watching 4 streams at once for obvious reasons.
Jan’s reaction to the Persona announcement was such a pure thing. He was just so happy and excited and nobody with an actual camera on them could even muster half a shit.
I enjoyed it and there were a couple times where Jess really had something to say. Her comments about being sick of the "I'm your reckoning" ultra serious protagonist type and wishing more games had the Bubsy "verbosity slider" (the only good thing about those games, where you could get him to chill the fuck out and not do brain dead fucking quips every five seconds) were things I could really get behind.
Edit: I guess Dan brought up the slider relistening/watching and Jess just backed that up immediately.

conversely i found Jess incredibly annoying and she didn't seem interested in almost any of the games except scorn, and wouldn't stop talking about scorn.

different strokes
I surprisingly find her difficult on the Silent Hill show (I don't keep up with most of GB). She's got that fangirlish pressure to mention things with an undercurrent of ISN'T THIS AWESOME paired with the broken mind of someone engaging with a fandom for too long (Bob has a similar issue), throwing out corrections and factoids with amendments like either "don't @ me" or "so annoying" etc, with a few sprinkles of "don't quote me on that". Plus the neverending hate for Konami for "not caring". And I get the impression that she fake-laughs a lot
Regarding Jess, I have mad respect for anybody that puts up with the monumental amount of shit she gets online while still showing up day after day.
Vinnie talked a bit about the weird intersection of their jobs and celebrity on the Ramblecast this week and it resonated with me pretty hard. He basically said that reading a single bad comment on the wrong day can put your entire week into a tailspin. I can't even imagine the amount of pressure that puts on a person. Really has me second-guessing posting anything negative about individuals from any of these sites - which I'm definitely guilty of.

Sure, and people online tend to be assholes. And the GB community, at least in comment threads, has never been as "awesome" as the GB hosts claim it to be (deservedly so especially during charity events), so I'm not surprised. I don't see why I would second-guess myself because of those people though

I think it's amazing jess is there, and i bet she gets so much shit and it fucking sucks
but as a viewer i just don't like how she is full in on internet culture in the way she talks, etc. i absolutely agree she does the fake laugh thing and only ever wants to talk about horror games (a genre I hate). so sadly she just doesn't jive with me. but that's the way it is, I don't like Jason games either, it's not like i'm gonna go post about how they are horrible people or whatever.

Also not showing the incredible console intro FMVs is a goddamn travesty

It's almost like the people who decided to bring it back have no idea why it was popular

We are watching the results of keeping a Chaos Elemental in stasis for four years without any means of letting his creative energy out into the world.
What? Have you seen his twitch? He has had outlets just fine.
The problem is, his energy has only grown. The man cannot be contained. Only endured.

the joke about mcdonald's sprite being some sort of extreme substance because it's very carbonated I think?

basically fandom is the worst.
