I am going to try and see Dune Friday after not following thru on my idea of seeing No Time To Die because I am a bastard. But I specifically read that ridiculous book to prep myself for Villenvue's enormous bullshit and I can't give up now.
So Night Teeth (Netflix) is literally a Vampire: The Masquerade movie but all the licensed names filed off. It's not bad, but could have been a lot better (weak ending, but ended well enough I suppose).
So they're Toreador?

Yeah I feel I may have undersold things a bit up thread, in that I was hype for Dune and it did not disappoint in the slightest. I'm not sure how it'll land for anyone that wasn't already on board but it may be worth going just to look at the vistas.

I was supposed to go see Dune this weekend for my mate's birthday, on account of we haven't hung out for over a year because ~2020~ but the release got delayed locally so I guess we're going to see the new Bond movie tomorrow instead?
I suspect this is a step down, but the nice thing about going together as a group for the first time in a while is even if it's bad we'll get to enjoy razzing the shit out of it afterwards.
That's unbelievably cool. Your new name is cool guy. Let's have sex.

I'm glad to hear that Dune is good even compared to the hype. I have no personal stake in Dune as a book or universe or whatever, but it's refreshing for a big budget movie to be both ambitious sci-fi and a good movie.
The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that a female crewmember, 42, has died from injuries resulting from a prop gun misfire on the Bonanza Creek Ranch set of the Alec Baldwin Western, Rust. She died after being transported via helicopter to University of New Mexico Hospital.
Another male crewmember, 42, remains in emergency care after being transported by ambulance to Christus St. Vincent’s hospital.
The names of the victims have not been disclosed.
“Detectives are investigating how [the prop firearm was used] and what type of projectile was discharged,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement Thursday. “This incident remains an active investigation. As more information becomes available, updates will be provided.”
Extremely spoilery thoughts spoiler tagged below. Keep in mind, I have never read the books and I have never seen any previous adaptation.
Again, gigantic spoilers, right off the jump here:
First off, it was absolutely beautiful.
That said, I have very mixed feelings about the movie. I enjoyed it all the way through, but it felt like it was mostly worldbuilding. Also I'm kind of getting tired of sci-fi that introduces a bunch of interesting characters and then immediately kills 95% of them without doing anything with them, which is basically what happened here. I mean, I understand this is the story they were trying to tell, or at least Frank Herbert was, but I'm just tired of that one thing. It starts off as a political story and then kills everyone. I mean, OK, I guess.
Also, I felt like it didn't really tread any new ground. I get that too - there is source material from the mid-60s to contend with - but it kind of feels like an amalgamation of Star Wars, Fury Road, and Tremors. And that sounds pretty cool and it really kinda was but to me I wish they focused on the characters more than moving us through set pieces which is what I really thought it felt like.
It's impossible for me not to compare it to Fury Road. Partly because of the sandy aesthetic. But also in structure. Dune had a runtime of 2:35. Fury Road had a runtime of 2:00 (which is suprising, I thought it was longer). But in 2:00, it felt to me like they accomplished a lot of worldbuilding and told a complete story with a bunch of unique characters. This felt like it was stretched further without saying much. Obviously, there will be a sequel and it's really intended to be a duology or trilogy or whatever, but this just felt kind of incomplete in and of itself. Like none of the arcs concluded or even moved forward enough to leave me pondering much. Various things are just going to be a mystery until the next movie comes out. That's it.
Despite all that, I liked it. The acting is top-notch all around. But it left me wanting, and not necessarily in the right way.

Dune was as good of an adaptation I could have possibly expected from a book that I don’t completely love.
It was beautiful, and well acted and had all the same problems as the book. The Gom jabbar scene was excellent, though, and it was neat seeing another take on a scene that gave me a decade worth of nightmares as a kid.
Ah, it stinks, it sucks, it's anthropologically unjust

That is extremely horrible but also Jesus Christ that headline is misleading

It's also important to note that "prop gun" in this context is not a prop gun. It's a really for real gun. It was most likely loaded with blank cartridges and a piece or pieces of the crimp out at the end of the casing got left behind in the barrel, so the next round that fired essentially turned it into a bullet.
I'm not super in the know about movie sets but I'm pretty sure productions that opt for blanks as opposed to digital gun FX have specially trained armorers who not only supply the guns, but who's job it is to inspect each weapon and keep tabs on them at all times so this exact kind of thing doesn't happen.
... why the shit was the prop gun pointed in the vicinity of the cinematographer?
Pointing the gun at the camera is a very common shot in movies with guns?

Watched Dune. Visuals were satisfying in scale, if still using the same muddy palette modern sci-fi seems to be far too in love with. Cast was solid with performances, would like to see all the appropriate characters return. Score was an excellent stretch for Zimmer given his usual milieu. I would have liked a little more time spent on character motivations and political machinations, but folks coming in cold shouldn't have terribly much trouble following along.
Goddamn box o pain is a godamn box o pain.
I give it 4.5 snorts of melange out of 5.

But even then, murals, tapestries, the garden that's left behind for Lady Jessica, there should be pops of color amid the starkness. Everything just felt so hyper-spartan when it shouldn't been so as to make the starkness of the landscape more striking.
I did like the visuals mostly, that's just my one personal quibble. The sheer Cthonicness of the vehicles was perfect though.

@Raijin Quickfoot I recommend Thai movie 13 Beloved if you're looking for relatively unknown horror-ish movies to watch. It's free on Tubi, along with the American remake 13 Sins.
Before following any advice, opinions, or thoughts I may have expressed in the above post, be warned: I found Keven Costners "Waterworld" to be a very entertaining film.

The universe is dark and weird.
Jeez, those poor people, though.
Alec Baldwin may not be the coolest dude, but Jesus Christ that's not something anybody should ever have to live with.
That's barring any sort of obscene criminal negligence like insisting on using live rounds or something, obviously.
