Geoff 'WORLD PREMIERE' Keighley presents [The Game Awards 2021]

Geoff's at it again giving us Video Game Christmas in December instead of in the Summer like E3 usually is. The Game Awards is a show about video games that has several nominated categories for various different achievements, but also hosts several first time reveals and new game information. The winners of the awards are voted on by a board of popular or big members of the gaming community, usually CEOs or popular figures. You can learn more about the game awards by visiting the website.
You can watch from one of the links in Geoff's tweet:

Metroid DREAD
I think from these choices, I have to go with Dread. A fresh Metroid that does good on the formula with excellently designed boss fights and amazing animation.
...but my heart is with Returnal and I hope they win every award that they were nominated for.
Yeah Dread is the game for me. R&C was fun but nothing mindblowing from previous entries. Resident Evil was fun but that last bit really makes it a chore to play. And Deathloop is oozing with style but after completing it I don't think I'll touch it again.
Metroid Dread I'll definitely try again. Especially since I found out my TV had lag on it while I tried it previously lol
IMO Metroid Dread is a gimme just a absolutely incredible entry and revival of 2D Metroid
Deathloop came and went and it never sounded like anyone really loved it just it was good enough
Ratchet and Clank while good its another one of those just with some really great tech behind it.
While I loved Village it's greatness ends when you are done with the castle and is just good from there on.
Psychonauts 2 was really good but I feel like its a few hours too long the last 25% dragged real hard.
It Takes Two I'll be honest.....is it really THAT level of game it never seemed to get the level of praise befitting of a game on this list and yet here it is?
But it's been a not so great year for games, so that isn't saying much.

I'd love to see Psychonauts 2 win, but my vote went elsewhere because I think the safe bet from the jury is either Ratchet and Clank or Metroid Dread and it serves the show hype better that a franchise revival wins GOTY
I really hope we see BotW2 here For whatever reason Nintendo loves to show BotW stuff at the Game Awards so it's possible at least
Typically Nintendo just does one announcement that usually isn't that big a thing -- I remember past years had BotW DLC and Bravely Default 2. Last year was the Sepiroth in Smash bombshell, but that wasn't a new game.
I'd love to see BotW2 but I'm keeping my expectations low.

Metroid DREAD
Not that it matters in the grand scheme of things, but I'd love for Dread to take Game of the Year. Just to prove that Metroid is back to being the top tier franchise it deserves to be.
I'm looking forward to the Sonic trailer. It was the last movie my kids and I saw before the pandemic. We loved it. My youngest has it on his rotation of regular movies to watch. I even loved the god awful product placement they put in the movie, it was just so stupid it makes me laugh. But more Jim Carey Eggman please!
Wait, It Takes Two was just this year? I coulda sworn it was from last year.
We've always been at war with Eurasia in the year 2020.
Anywho, my heart says Psychonauts 2, but while that game is polished to a shine, I never quite got the same level of "holy crap this level!" that I got from the first game, with levels like the Milkman Conspiracy or Lungfishopolis.
That said, I had some frustration with Metroid Dread, so maybe it's Psychonauts 2 after all.
Do you want to watch The Game Awards Tonight, but want to do so in a place that replaces all Activision, Ubisoft, EA, and Quantic Dream content with cut aways discussing those company's ongoing allegations / current strike actions / worker demands?
I'll be doing a thing.
For 4.5 hours, starting 4:30pm Pacific, 7:30pm Eastern, and 00:30am UK, I'll be the destination of choice if you desperately want to see those reveals live, but want certain companies marketing attempts replaced with discussion of how they really suck.
Of the list, Dread is the only one I've played (and I enjoyed it enough to beat it 4 times to get the <4 hr on normal and hard, plus a 100% normal clear).
I'd also accept Rise.
Endwalker is the actual best release of the year but it's outside of the window for consideration unfortunately.

I mean, the Game Awards was where they showed the first ever footage of BotW being played. And they've had BotW stuff there several times (another playthrough of the Faron region before launch and the DLC announcement). I'm not saying BotW2 is gonna 100% be there but there's a lot of precedent so it's totally possible.
Also they announced Joker in Smash there which, as the first DLC character, I think was kinda huge...

If Halo was on there (come on Geoff, it did just come out today and technically barely made it) I'd vote for that. It's awesome so far, but also to be fair I haven't played any of the games on that poll. I can't keep up with new games anymore, Halo being an exception because 1 I've always been a huge fan of the franchise and 2 it's on gamepass so I didn't have to buy it.
Still a big fan of the show and what Geoff has done with it, so I'll be watching.
So did anything come out of that ridiculous comment Geoff made about not wanting to "take sides" in the whole Activision abuse issue?
In fact he put out a fuller statement saying that, beyond the nominations, ActiBlizz won't be involved, and that "There is no place for abuse, harassment or predatory practices in any company or any community."
Actually I don't think he never actually said he didn't want to take sides? I think he said he was still thinking about how to navigate it.

He later said that, aside from awards (which are decided ahead of time by a large group of industry companies including places like Giant Bomb, Gamespot, IGN and a whole host of others accross the world) that Activision would not be involved with the game awards.
Which, given all they have next year is CoD: Whatever (Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 got delayed to 2023) that statement rings kind of hollow.

Yeah, I didn't see exactly what he said but I had a feeling it was something along those lines. I don't really blame him for not wanting to bring the house down by talking about any of that during the show. At least for me, just boycotting their stuff for the show is probably good enough.
I don't have a Switch, so Deathloop is GOTY. Even if it wasn't, I think the refinements it made and problems it solved in the immersive sim genre put it ahead of another good metroidvania.

It should be between Ratchet, Dread, and Psychonauts 2.
It Takes Two surprises me it's even on the list. Haven't played Deathloop so I can't say with that one. RE8 seemed to barely make a blip. It came and went without much fanfare other than the vamp lady silliness pre-launch. VII seemed to make much more of an impact when it released.
In the end, what I'm most curious about, is how many of you are planning to actually watch this? You couldn't pay me to watch it. Much easier to hit the internet after it's done and see what the announcements/reveals are rather than sit through it. I'm guessing quite a lot actually watch this though since he keeps doing it every year.

I still need to play a lot of the GOTY options this year, of the options I’ve only played RE8 and it was pretty good but not great. I loved Unsighted though, that might be my pick for this year unless the Halo campaign really blows me away. It is good so far.
The chunk of It takes two I played demonstrated a really solid coop game. Good mechanics and variety. Pure coop games are a rarity, so I think it deserves some recognition for that, though I dunno if it's GotY material.

I think Valheim would probably secure my GOTY?

In other news, Halo Infinite won People's Choice

(I would have liked to have seen Forza Horizon 5 higher but it's still surprising enough as it is that a racing game at least got top 5)
... Sadly it is gonna be premiered on the preshow, but it is still something!

And gonna be mad if Psychonauts 2 doesn't take it because it's the clear victor.
MH Rise or Metroid Dread here, to me.

Given the last year I don't even understand how they could have scrapped together even an hour!
I assume it is 2.5 hours of CG trailers that tell nothing about a game that doesn't come out for another three years.
Well, probably at least 30 minutes of the cringiest of skits/musical numbers too.
