I am playing this in a hardcore no progress until my party and a full box are the same level.
Of course that just means I am running around dangerous areas and hucking balls at anything to see if it sticks. I've got 9 badges and 240 pokemon so far. Poison star and normal gym are my current wall.
Stumbling across some weird and rare pokemon who I would add to my team if they weren't levels above my team.
Love finding a group of pokemon and then finding out they are very rarely seen. Not for me!
Quagsire is not even in the regional pokedex so we aren't operating by Galar rules here.
Which is good because I spent hours back on the day trying to evolve Perserrker before realizing that was an empty spot for Persian.
Normally you catch a pokemon and the two entries surrounding it can be looked at as hints. But some evolutions are hidden like Toedscools for some reason.
Saddened Flamigo doesn't evolve but he is my amigo and I don't hold this against him.
I keep going places I'm underlevelled for to catch pokemon I can't use. I also just beat the 5th titan, and I think going for titans first is the best strategy. Then again, if I'd gone for gyms first I'd be able to use the pokemon I'm catching, so maybe I'm wrong.

I have a list of the various tasks and what level they are and it's been useful
I have a podcast now. It's about video games and anime!Find it here.
I wish the gyms would scale to your number of badges. I went East first, and my first gym was in the 20s. I then went back to the west and found the first gym there to be around 14.
I mean, I’ve caught a bu ch of stuff and could just make an appropriate-leveled team. But with the semi open nature of the map, it feels a bit disappointing for the gyms to have a hard level.

It's really baffling because it's almost impossible to do any of the tasks in the"intended" order unless you have a guide

Oh wow, I just finished my 4th gym (Larry is the best) and kinda assumed it was scaling on it's own.
Guess I just mostly did everything in the intended order instead?
so there's just no noise or sparkle or anything to indicate a shiny pokemon spawned huh
how did they mess that up after doing it perfectly in PLA?
It really bugs me that terra pokemon get these big sparkly auras, and here's colourblind me trying to see if that 3 pixel high pokemon is a different colour. I don't care about terra pokemon, put that effect on the shinies please.
One thing they did get right is that if you send a pokemon out to autobattle, they'll leave shinies alone.
I caught a shiny completely on accident and only found out because I looked at my trainer badge and it said I'd fought one. It was a Silicobra too, so even knowing that it's a shiny means that I can still barely tell

I am actually really glad that they don't scale. Nothing utterly destroys immersion for me like an open world game that levels with you. It makes everything feel so incredibly fake and artificial for me. That things don't level with you is one of my favorite things about the new pokemon.
I'd at least rather the gyms scale based on number of badges. Seems like that would have been pretty easy to execute.
It would even help with the immersion, for me, because we know that gym leaders are supposed to bring out teams appropriate to the applicants - the anime straight up has some gym leaders check how strong Ash seems to be before picking what pokemon to bring out. That's supposed to be why the next gym is always higher leveled than the previous one, in the previous linear entries.
Otherwise, imagine being the unlucky fucker who gets their starter pokemon in the town with the eighth gym instead of starting out in Pallet Town.

I didn't have a ton of time to play so I didn't get very far (basically just got to the school and unlocked the three paths.. started doing the Titans path but that's it). Enjoying it quite a bit so far. Holy shit the technical issues though. I can forgive a LOT but this is pretty inexcusable. This makes the graphics of Arceus look like a masterpiece... I really, really hope they can patch some of this shit out because yuck. Like, I just tried to look at the plant in my house and the camera clipped out of bounds without me even trying. Come on Pokemon Company...
Also at one point I had the weirdest thing - I don't even know if this is the game's fault but I've never had it happen before.. my controller just started freaking out. Whole buttons wouldn't work, the stick was acting like it was stuck in a down position (so you go into a menu and it starts scrolling through the menu options immediately), the home button will only let me put the console in sleep mode (can't even get to the home menu), etc. Restarting the game fixed this but my god.
Honestly the tech issues are a real shame because I'm liking most everything else. The "Let's Go" feature is great but also super janky unfortunately. I wish it worked a little better because the idea is sound. Same with ZL targeting (how do you screw this up? o_O). It's super picky if it actually wants to target something. Loving all the new Pokemon tho, how stuff has changed, etc. I like the Poke Center giving little tips instead of the game forcing you through three hours of tutorials or whatever like some Pokemon games do. I would much rather have a tooltip popup than have to sit through 20 lines of dialog of an NPC demonstrating for the 30th time how to catch a Pokemon. I know, I've done this before :P
I do hate that I can't jump. I got used to jumping in Arceus and it's weird that it's limited to your mount (like if your mount can jump why can't you?). Also since I just got off playing Xenoblade Chronicles 3 I keep trying to right thumb stick press to bring up the full map. -_- I got so damn used to that now it's bleeding into other games. Haha.
Oh, and hate that outfit isn't customizable. Like, what is the point of letting me pick different colored shoes, etc if I'm stuck wearing a purple school uniform the entire time? Unless I buy purple stuff or other complimenting colors they clash like hell. No idea why this is limited, it's dumb.

There's something like an in-game guide: if you hover over on the ploy events, there's a description you can scroll through. There's typically a phrase like "Pokémon League challengers tend to stop here first" or "this guy is halfway up the ranks of Team Star" that roughly indicates when you're expected to tackle them relative to the rest of that quest.
My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.

This is actually a big problem in a few of my pokemon communities because we have color blind shiny hunters that just can't anymore.

With the more open exploration i was wondering what barriers I would have if I wanted to get the first form of the pseudo-legendary dragon as soon as possible.
It looks like they can be as low level as 26, would I be able to make my way there around then to get one on my team for more of the story?

Yeah the lack of sparkle is really crap. Like, some shinies look identical. How the hell are you supposed to tell that Sunkern is very very slightly lighter yellow?
Yeah the shiny method in this game just supports that the idea that covid caused problems with the development. I dont think the shiny method has been so blatantly the same in the modern era. Which is sad because swarm hunting didnt seem that popular in Legends and here we go again.
That said the game itself is amazing. Small issues aside the school, the open story, the no hand holding, and it still having that depth. And that is without having the routes and seemingly endless fights which I DID NOT miss.
I finished the gyms and despite not scaling they did not really pose any threat. They could scale them but they were also not really meant to pose any challenge outside of you need to bring a type strong team with you. Ive only done a couple of the star dungeons as I also focussed on the Legends line. And after finishing up the titans...
That has to be one of the most emotional pokemon stories ever. And then after finishing up the titans and going into what is the end game portion of the line Arven proceeded to destroy me with his team of nonsense and the good boy lol. I wasnt mad actually heh.

I remember how that one Pokémon OVA that featured Red and Green as characters has a moment where Brock selects just 2 mins from a larger collection based on Red’s progress through the league. There’s room to argue multiple ways on how to do it in the games, but I thought that was neat.

If anyone was curious, raids do not refresh after beating them all like they do in Sword/Shield. It's also entirely unfeasible to complete them all lol I spent about 6 hours doing raids.

Honestly I never understood how raids worked in Sword and Shield. It might be that I needed to beat the game or something, but I swear, it was like first day I'd see a bunch of them, then I could almost never find active raid dens after that. All the inactive dens also just confuses the hell out of things.

Consider, she must have had a rival back when she first started. Where are they?

Pokemon outbreaks in this aren't fucking around, I stopped by a Rufflet outbreak and must have chewed through 100 of them easily, maybe 150. No shinies though, so maybe the chance isn't boosted anymore.

Apparently people have discovered a very easy way to shiny hunt if you want to know a trick.
utilizing the outbreak, apparently once you kill 60+ you max out your shiny odds. Easiest to do it in let’s go mode. Then you just picnic and leave the picnic immediately and see if any of the spawns are shiny. It’s basically just forcing spawn resets at max odds
