I'd say the Red or Sovereign dragons fit best for Jabba.

If you're going for the crime lord thing as well, you could make the dragon a runt or disfigured in some way that could explain why it wasn't off doing more dragons stuff. Still dangerous to the heroes and and mean enough to control their crime empire, but, like, Smaug didn't have thugs roughing up local shop owners, ya know?

I really dig dragons as long standing antagonists rather than a gold piñata.

    **edit**

You did mention controlling an empire, so the crime lord thing is out (I still think that's a near concept).

On its face the Sovereign may seem more likely to be in to ruling an empire, as they are more keen to meddle in the little peoples' affairs. But it could be interesting to have a dragon that plays against type. They acted in a way not typical for their kind and that's why they were able to take over.

Thing is, my group went through the entirety of Fall of Plagustone and Age of Ashes and I believe we had a total of two deaths. Both were in the blood ooze fight in Fall of Plaguestone, which we did alongside the fight with the alchemist orc that made it. I forget how the other guy died, but my halfling cleric of Desna didn't heal up first (I didn't realize how crucial Medicine was and thought I could heal with just spells) got dropped to 0, and the bleed effect got him to Dying 4 very quickly. After that, we didn't have another death for all of Age of Ashes (although we did have 5-6 players and the GM did softball one fight where we were all clustered in just the right place for Vampiric Exsanguination).

Conversely, the run I did with a different group through Age of Worms (converted to P1e) resulted in 8 deaths and we didn't even finish the campaign. The P1e homebrew I'm in right now is proving just as lethal, though we do only have 3 players.

But I don't mind, as long as there's a bed beneath the stars that shine,
I'll be fine, just give me a minute, a man's got a limit, I can't get a life if my heart's not in it.

What if the dragon had damaged wings? So it couldn't fly?

I don't know if empire is right for this Jabba the Dragon.

In my mind a series of island-like continents (imagine geographical areas akin to Australia) are each controlled by their own local dragon, akin to "Hutt Space" in Star Wars.

They'd just need to be powerful enough that the dominant necromantic empire across the entire setting wouldn't want to contend against them.

Damaged wings would be good, or they messed around with the wrong magical artifact and suffered some kind of wasting curse. Maybe nobody knows! Or they've cultivated their reputation some other way.

Jabba certainly wasn't a physical threat on his own, but he maintained his empire with the threat of feeding you, your family, your dentist, and your speeder insurance salesman to his pet rancor.

this variant of dragons' wings atrophy and wither at advanced age due to their immense size and proclivity for sitting on their horde and giving orders rather than predating and ravaging like they do in their youth

  • CaedwyrCaedwyr Registered User regular
Pathfinder 1e had Lindwurms, which mostly didn't have wings. There might be some ideas you could borrow from them.

You could just make up a wingless kind of dragon. Break the D&D mold.
There was a cool one in the first episode of the record of lodoss war OVA but I can't find any good clips of that scene.

On the Welcome to Nightvale podcast there is/was a 5-headed dragon that was a convicted felon and also mayoral candidate. One of the heads was pretty good at schmoozing and the rest were fucking crazy. One of them kept threatening to burn everything down and kept screaming about it.

I kept up with Nightvale all the way up to the episode where… I forgot her name, but the goddess of the town did a big monologue. I should see what they’re up to now.

I'm just looking at a Reddit post rather than the PDF (on mobile) but it appears that when attuned to a weapon it adds 1d4 lightning damage and provides access to the cantrip. Higher level versions increase the additional damage die and grant access to lightning bolt/draw lightning.

Okay, Pathfinder thread, if I presented you with a zine to run a mini-campaign setting in one location, what would you need within say 6 pages to feel comfortable running a series of sessions in one location?

I ask cause I spent an hour this afternoon drafting up a little intro-section for my mega-island:
    ZIROCCO
Government: Feudal (official), Criminal Despot (unofficial)
    Environment: Arid, Desert
    Sector: Solarian Quadrant
    System: the Dragon Isles
Primary Denizens: Sandstrider Lizardfolk, Cactus Leshy, Kobolds, Charhide Goblins, Humans, & Others
Languages: Common, Draconic, Goblin, Iruxi, Sylvan, & Harmonic
Exports: polaris shards, Zirocco spice-wine, mercenary work, minerals (ore, copper, zinc)
Factions: the Dominion of Aquarius, the Conclave of War-Drakes
    Points of Interest:
The Tourmaline Wastes: the rocky region in the east that has been turned into a maze of tunnels through mining of its buried polaris shards.
The Sunclaw Sea: the cruel desert in the western shadow of the Tourmaline Wastes.
Zir Shadaloo: the mega-island’s largest settlement, a bustling seaport on the southern coast with an active criminal underworld
Zir Lakstyke: a western-inland settlement built around its sports coliseum and shadowed by Razzog’s palace.
Zir Lunna: the capital of Zirocco, a thriving seaport on the northern coast focused on fishing & shipbuilding.
Zir Rokor: a central-inland, mining settlement housing those who dig up & sell polaris shards.
    People of Interest:
Arthur Tri’lash (LE male human) governor of Zirocco as installed & supported by the DoA
Madam Ulix SilverEye (CE female charhide goblin) caporegime of the SilverEye crime organization
Razzog (NE adult red dragon) shadow governor of Zirocco
Vadum Coldblade (LE male sandstrider lizardfolk) marshall of the polaris mining operations in the Tourmaline Wastes
Ver Dur’a de RaGuer (TN male cactus leshy) warchief of the Sunclaw Sea
Curlee Spineleak (CN male human) executive manager of the Zirocco Spirit-Ring & its athletic entertainers

Anything that strikes you as missing that you'd need as a game-master??

    Agendas of interest.

Basically, what are the various plots and events currently happening. This is what turns it from a setting into a mini-world the players are being dropped into.

"Mysteries" is another fun heading, especially since it can be a bit more openly presented to the players, while the Agendas of Interest is largely on the GM side of things. There's rumors and public knowledge of past events and happenings... but a lot of the background is still going to be on the GM to build. Mysteries can be fun to springboard off what the players think up.

Something I'm noticing with the PF2 ranger is that it feels like when just looking at PH1 class feats, there's like an immediate "correct" answer for both the primary archer and the primary two-weapon builds. Like there's other options, but also there's the right option

Which isn't bad, nor is it something that's unique to PF2, just something I noticed.

If it matters to anyone, the Humble Bundle for the Pathfinder 2E books has one day (26 hours at the time of writing here) to jump in on it.

I bought it. Even if I never end up touching the system, the full package with the pawns and maps will probably be useful down the road.

ALSO ALSO, it's worth pointing out that if you grab any level of the bundle, it gives you a key to Paizo's website that expires at the beginning of August. So if you do go in on it, make sure you go and redeem all the stuff over at Paizo's place.

Also, it seems like Paizo's web login is fucked in half right now. Grrr.

Gonna be playing my first actual session of pf2e this Friday, as a Leaf druid who is gonna explore into wild and focus on that. I wanted goodberry more than wildmorph.

But that does mean I have a leshy familiar. Getting to select what they can do every day is neat, but until I've actually started I don't really know what we're in for / what pairs well when you don't know. Are there any generally useful pairings, with little to no information to go off of besides being the only caster and only healer in an otherwise martial party?

Mostly just to get started with. Though if there are any that are better or worse than they sound on paper when put into practice that'd be handy to hear about.

A solid go to for familiars when you don't have a good feel of what is needed for a caster is an extra focus point recovery ability. Once per day you can have the familar refresh a focus point for you so you can have even more goodberries or whatever focus spells you have. They have options like that for alchemists where they can cough up an extra alchemist reagent once per day.

Had my first TTRPG session tonight. Played as a goblin Alchemist in a carrion crown converted to 2E compaign.

My roleplay was abit awkward but I had fun. Everybody was super easy going and the GM was cool with questions. Even if things go awry in the weeks or coming months, tonight, I feel like I really lucked out with this group.

The voice for my character (as in literally the sound of his voice) is going to be hard to nail down. Half of my brain is saying typical goblin voice, the other half wants him to try and fail to sound more distinguished and its kind of a weird mix between the two right now.

While there's nothing wrong with an educated goblin actually being distinguished, I feel like a more self-taught goblin putting on airs after reading a book about some royal alchemist somewhere is a good schtick. Like they get the vocabulary, but are still a bit lowbrow. "Goode Lady, honor me with the location of thine shinies, or I moten explodeth thine face."

I tend to give a lot of thought into how my characters would think and speak, like their actual opinions and words, but I personally never try to alter the sound of my voice, feel like it always come out super cringey. I've played rpgs with actor friends who are amazing at accents and whatever but it's obviously an unfair comparison.

So just don't feel like you have to put on a voice, the character of a character can definitely come through in the content of their speech without sounding any different from your normal speaking voice.

As much as i love voices, cadence, tone and mannerisms sell it more for me. Like specific hand gestures and the way someone speaks can convey a ton. Like clipped delivery, a frown and crossed arms versus loud exuberance and waving arms can get a lot across about a character.
