I used to get extremely mad about LGBTQIA+ hangers on but they are so rare that tbh it doesn't matter as much as I thought it would. Some people are just lonely and want a group that doesn't judge them. I only draw a line when they try to dictate group dynamics or start giving lectures on "the right way to be queer or have / not have a gender".

People like Dolezal suck because now there’s people acting like transracial is a valid argument against transgender people and I’m frequently expected to act like the argument isn’t a bunch of shitheads being shitheads

But in her specific case I do feel a bit sorry for her. That doesn’t excuse what she did but she clearly has some issues

I don't want anybody to lose their job over having a sex work side gig. Dolezal was fired for the wrong reason.

But she's completely unhireable. She spent her life defrauding her employer and lying about her background. She's shown no remorse and doubled down on that lie. No employer in their right mind should touch her with a 10 foot pole.

I really wish there was some Public Works program for 'unhireable' people. everyone should be allowed the right to work. maybe instead of having prison slave labor programs they can instead have public works programs that do the same labor but with actual livable wages attached

I agree we should have a public works program, but there are going to be some people who are unhireable even by a public works program. And the social safety net of last resort shouldn't require labor. A public works program still needs a safety net under it.

In an ideal world we could be trans anything and design our own chosen bodies. But that ain't the world we are in and trans racialism is v problematic.

Yeah but when there are people in literally every school district actively harming LGBTQIA+ kids an families, what are we talking about as making her a nationally reviled figure?

Dolezal didnt harm a cause herself except by taking up space in institutions and organizations (that thought her actual work was tolerable); reactions and assholes who already wanted to do that did

Nobody with a nuanced take on this stuff saw Dolezal and pivoted to "well trans stuff is all fake noe!!!"

Its just an excuse to broadcast and push the views they had already

Hah, the more I look at that screen, the more I remember. Default JOAT, default game (probably, it's using the default name anyway) for what I think was a small universe? 100 factories and 100 mines is a reasonable queue, but they better be ready to shove some scouts a little higher up soon...and move that orbital miner off your HW! Put it to use ya jerk! And get that colonizer moving on at least one of those two nearby planets!

The UI is very Windows 3.1 but does a fantastic job of giving you almost all the information you need at once.

Which makes sense, since they worked on spreadsheets for their day job.

The base dicing mechanic is fine, and nearly indistinguishable from White Wolf's default. You roll X pool of dice, count up how many hit a number or higher, and it's a degree of success mechanic... the more dice that do this, the better you do. But it's within the number of rolls you have to make to adjudicate anything that isn't a basic skill test that makes the game bloated (hitting someone involves three separate dice rolls), and also that every task system has a different flowchart on how to resolve the task. There are ways to take the basic ideas (casting magic channels it through your body and damages you, cyberware installed enhances you but also makes you more resistant and less capable of magic) and still making a simple and easy-to-run system. Unfortunately, there's a bit of a cargo cult understanding of how to design a game in Catalyst (which extends to all of their properties).

I still really like the variance in the curve of dice pools over rolling a single linear curve of a d20. But One Roll Engine has taught me a lot of lessons on how good a fast and easy mechanic can be at the table and still provide a dynamic combat experience.

I actually don't have a problem with Dolezal at all

(maybe this is one of my more cancelable takes?)

she feels connected to an identity, she changes herself to look more like how she wants to, who cares? it's real cringe, and it is immoral if she lies about her heritage to get access to a limited pot of resources, but other than that--people can present however they want along whatever axes, imo

I also used to get real judgy about various people claiming queer identities and then I was like actually who cares

I believe all of them; I think they feel something and the word they've chosen to describe that something is 'queer' and even though I might not use the word queer to describe, like, literally any non-normativity, fucking whatever, they can use that word if they want and why should I judge? Let everyone in, let everyone be who they feel like being, let everyone call themselves whatever they want

not saying anyone's wrong for liking BG3, just that it's just an update to the BG series and if you didn't like them then you're not going to be impressed by how faithful it is to its legacy

I was much happier with Wrath of the Righteous and Rogue Trader than I would've been with BG3, and they're quite a bit more focused. The Baldur's Gate series operates in the weird TSR-derivrd D&D context of an interrelated and sprawling setting rather than the narrower (if not a lot; with WotR) settings of those

Baldur's Gate is specifically just in Forgotten Realms. Its about as limited as Goloran is from Pathfinder. And mostly just one small section, the Sword Coast. Like you aren't dealing with Neverwinter or Icewind Dale in it at all. Like I have played through WoTR mostly twice. Its about as broad or more broad than BG3 because it is an epic battle thing with armies.

I'm aware, played BG1 and 2, and have run games in the Realms myself at the tabletop.

I'd argue Golarion is a lot more siloed than the Realms in terms of what might pop up in any given region. WotR and Kingmaker are both pretty big, but they don't have people playing mix and match with 20-40 years of D&D the way Baldur's Gate does. Plot, encounter design, etc. were tighter due to Paizo's print versions being the basis for both games, imo.

But I'll take your word for it that 3 is smaller than I'm imagining it to be.

I should probably examine this opinion more but my gut reaction is that I'm tentatively okay with dismissing teachers who have an OF, not because having an OF is bad/wrong, but because I can't imagine that that doesn't just occupy 100% of the oxygen in the room re: providing instruction
