Aww yeah, that's what I like to see.
But, if you prefer something slightly more modern, the current best distributor of classic anime on DVD and Blu-ray is probably
Discotek. You should also keep an eye on their
Twitter, where they post teasers before announcing their latest remasters and rereleases. RightStuf and Madman both used to be solid choices for physical anime...until Funimation, aka Crunchyroll, aka Sony absorbed both of them. And, of course, raised their prices and provided shittier service. Capitalism!
Sentai is another option, and is having a massive sale as of me writing this OP.
Shout! Factory also sells some anime, and live action Japanese shows like super sentai and Kamen Rider, and streams some of them (for free!) on
Shout! TV and
TokuSHOUTsu.
Speaking of streaming free anime, have you heard the good word about
Tubi?
The best streaming service? Well, it's got plenty of anime as well! And tokusatsu, too! All free, with ads, although their ad setup is one of the best and least intrusive around. Toradora, Death Note, Ranma 1/2, Cardcaptor Sakura, Arakawa Under the Bridge, Ronin Warriors, Magic Knight Rayearth, and tons more! This was just after a quick scroll through their massive list.
RetroCrush is another classic anime streaming service, although there's no free option. I also see some live action Japanese and Korean dramas on there, which Tubi has as well. Don't pay for a sub if you can find it on Tubi or YouTube!
That's right, YouTube! There are several official YT channels with full seasons available! My favorite is probably
Nozomi Entertainment, which has classics like Revolutionary Girl Utena, Dirty Pair, Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Princess Nine, Space Pirate Mito, and El Hazard. It looks like their physical media store was also swallowed up by Crunchyroll, but at least the free episodes are still here!
Viz also has a YT channel, featuring every episode of Sailor Moon, Naruto, Hunter Saltire Hunter, and Inuyasha. The
official Gundam YT channel cycles through full Gundam seasons, and currently features SEED, SEED Destiny, and The Witch from Mercury.
Anime! on TMS also has has playlists of free shows, both subbed and dubbed!
And, while it's not exactly anime, I can't leave out the
official Toei Tokusatsu channel. It has many fully subtitled episodes of classic live action shows. The full seasons seem to be hidden, but perhaps might magically appear if you view YouTube from outside of America (possibly not subtitled). There's also two big YouTube channels that upload full episodes of anime subtitled in English for those living in the SEA region,
MuseAsia and
AnimeLog.
So, now that we're all caught up on how to watch anime that's not a big deal on Crunchyroll or Netflix, let's discuss some classic anime, along with everything that's not currently airing! If you're catching up on a show from the last season or two, you can probably scroll back through the main anime thread to catch up on the conversation there, but it's also fine to talk about those shows here as well.
Let me also throw in a plug for
AniList, my personal favorite site to track what anime you've watched, plan to watch, or are currently watching! I find it incredibly helpful, not only for being notified when a new episode airs or a sequel to something you've watched is announced, but for browsing shows by year, from 1940 to 2024. Every show's page should also include a full listing of cast and staff, along with recommendations of similar shows. You can also follow other users to see what they're watching, and compare lists to see where yours overlap. If people are interested in sharing their AniList or MyAnimeList profiles, I can add them to this OP for later reference!

Oh, oh I see how it is, @Reynolds...
You talk about all the great anime on Tubi, but leave off one particular gem?!
But at least they translate all their song lyrics Crunchyroll.
you say that but there are shows where they aren't, or its a per-app thing now with the new HiDive format. I was getting no lyric translations for The Dangers in My Heart, at least on the HiDive fire tv app. I randomly finished one of the episodes while watching on my roku instead, and noticed they had translations for the on-screen text that weren't showing up on the fire tv app version. It also it doesn't seem to remember when I change the language/subtitle tracks between episodes now (again, fire, didn't test this on roku). it also is a lot harder to get back into a show you were watching, and when you pick an episode you didn't finish and watch it it doesn't launch into the next episode or even the series (at least on fire tv, did not test everything on the roku version).
seriously, wtf hidive. I will give them credit that the new app doesn't have tons of random "maintenance" crashes now, but some of this QOL stuff is worse than their old app. the website is also slightly buggy on this new revision; it wouldn't let me scroll through all of the episodes of one show (because it had 24 episodes, and was only showing 5 at a time, so it stopped at ep 20).
maaaybe i will
Yesssssss
(also why do we have two anime threads I'm scared)
Some of us wanted a place to discuss older anime, without that discourse getting drowned out by spoiler-filled discussions of the hottest two shows of the current season.
Oh neat, I'm always behind on new stuff (and am an old person so I get lost easily) so this is a nice idea. I do a Saturday morning cartoon thing in one of the many Discord servers I'm in, and this week I'm showing the live action Space Battleship Yamato (2010) and continuing our Cowboy Bebop watch through.

Goddamn, I love the old ADV sizzle reel. So 90s it hurts.
i should... probably actually start watching chihayafuru sometime
finally, I'll get to see the end of dunbine myself
spoilers for dunbine ending
moreso than others it feels like he wrote himself into a corner and just went fuck it
but I just wasn't sure off hand
edit: anyways, here's an excuse to post a dunbine OP cover

That's a good movie. And has a very surprising credits song.
A show I have learned that I just don't have the energy to watch after 8 PM on a worknight.
That show is determined to ease me to sleep.
It arrives on our programming block, looks me clear in the eyes and declares:
Time for sleep!
But $81 is a bit much for one piece of entertainment...
I could buy 15 cheap novels for that price!

Yeah I can only speak from personal experience and I have seen some Crunchyroll shows that translated their song lyrics but those are few and far between. Both platforms are really inconsistent in that regard.
Also I had an instance last night where the word placement broke on some subtitles and some of the words were under the second line of subtitles. I appreciate Hidive for hosting a lot of obscure anime or shows crunchyroll won't host but man that site and app seem to barely function.
Good news everyone, they're constructing a Dragon Ball theme park! I can't wait to take a trip to...let's see...Saudi Arabia.
Maybe I can go to a WWE PPV while I'm there.

Its the only place to access it legally!
I have to specific TV because for films its obviously any Ghibli stuff.
But TV wise, what do you think?

Maybe The Slayers, if they have any D&D or at least LotR experience.
Edit: Bubblegum Crisis is an OVA, not a TV series.
