This seems like the most appropriate place for this!

3 years after completing the Higurashi VNs... it's finally time. I finally feel ready. I have installed Umineko on my steam deck.

Specifically the Umineko Project mod. It took some doing compared to the 07th mod, but it already feels worth it. Looking forward to giving my impressions!

We also have a visual novel thread in G&T, uh, somewhere. The Umineko anime is awful; the less said, the better.

Finished off my Cowboy Bebop re-watch last Saturday with the movie, and it was better than I remembered from seeing it in the theater! This Saturday I'm starting a re-watch of FLCL.

Couldn't even find it with a search! Probably best to use a thread that's alive in a subform I use anyway.

I've been sufficiently warned away from the adaptation, I heard the Higurashi one has some major faults too. But in both cases, wow, incredible OPs.

The Umineko manga, on the other hand, is an excellent adaptation of the VN and very well regarded

i don't know enough about the umineko project vs witch hunt translation to have a strong opinion either way, but my main recommendation is you should really play umineko with ryukishi's artwork and NVL style text (lowkey i think you shouldn't use voices either for a first time readthrough, but if you're only gonna play it once it's your call)

for higurashi i prefer the console sprites overall, but with umineko none of the other versions quite capture or succeed the energy of the original art

I'm playing umineko project with the witch hunt translation, so far it does seem like a good one! I'm enjoying the introduction greatly, with a pretty big caveat that I'll expand upon once I finish the chapter.

I've seen the ryukishi artwork and, well, they certainly seem like an improvement over the higurashi sprites but they just don't do anything for me at all. Maybe there are some key moments that work better with the OG sprites, but I'm willing to make the tradeoff. Had to look up NVL style but hoo boy, I played half of chapter 1 of higurashi unmodded and you'd have to drag me kicking and screaming to ever go back to NVL style. I like me that nice simple textbox that makes things readable and doesn't block the scene. NVL might be for some people, but not for me.

The original sprites are mostly known for their expressions, and you probably know why if you've played Higurashi.

One of my best ever anime watching experiences, as recommended by a total rando on another forum, is watching Gungrave as blind as possible and skipping the first episode which spoils the "twist"

It's a very good mafia show in that context, and somehow I managed not to get to the big spoiler of the basic premise of the game it's based on, so it genuinely hit different that way because the second act was a total surprise

If you are at all curious, and especially if you don't know what the deal with Gungrave is, I strongly recommend watching it like this -- everything in the first episode all shows up again later, anyways, so you lose nothing by skipping to the second and the show is wildly better for it in terms of pacing

Thankfully I found the VN thread - https://forums.penny-arcade.com/discussion/151884/visual-novels-chaos-head-anonymous-code-and-holy-night-incoming-more-semicolons#latest

But yeah, Umineko is all about the OG art, especially for the expressions, but all the other little details are better too, even the outfits seem to have more personality.

I am happy to be the uncultured swine on this one, especially cause I like my sprites to flap their mouths along with the voices

But yeah no I don't have the pachinko sprites (why there are pachinko sprites???)

  • cj iwakuracj iwakura The Rhythm Regent Bears The Name FreedomRegistered User regular
Yeah, the OG had no voice acting. And it depends on what version you're playing, the official Steam release had the pachinko ones by default. The other ones are from the PS3 release(which also had a boss cover).

There's a pachinko machine tie-in for literally EVERYTHING. It's like rule34, but for gambling. There are entire franchises that exist primarily in pachinko machine format that they themselves eventually spawn anime. Sometimes multiple anime. eg Kaitou Tenshi Twin Angel.

Kino's Journey is kind of an odd one for me, it's a show whose ideas I love, but the actual show itself usually doesn't quite feel like it's doing justice to the ideas it's playing with. I love talking about it but I don't really have any temptation to go back and watch it again.

I will say that Episode 20 of Mushishi "A Sea of Words" has, for my money, my favorite romance scene in any story ever, which is impressive considering it's just two characters chatting about stuff and if you haven't watched a decent portion of the show already you might not even realize there's anything going on there at all.
Every other episode opens with the narrator talking about that episode's mushi. Ep 20 opens with Ginko talking about the girl, not the mushi. And through the series we've seen multiple girls crushing on Ginko a little (or at least on his nature as an outsider and a traveler and a potential escape from their narrow village lives) and he's politely but firmly turned them down. But when Tanyuu asks to travel with him someday he says yes, and their whole conversation is laden with like this very tender regret, trying not to say too much since one of them can't travel and one of them can't stop. Virtually every other episode in the series ends with Ginko walking on, back on his journey, but this episode just fades out, with them hanging out on the rock together for a little bit longer.

The show's been very episodic and the stories mostly all follow the same formula, so when there's this one episode and one character where suddenly the formula goes out the window it's subtle but really effective way of letting you know like yeah, this lady is different, their relationship is different from any characters we've seen before.

A trap is for fish: when you've got the fish, you can forget the trap. A snare is for rabbits: when you've got the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words are for meaning: when you've got the meaning, you can forget the words.

Yeah, I do know the OG didn't have voice acting! It's an impressive undertaking, I can't imagine how many hours of voice acting are in this.

As for the pachinko, I'm more surprised that there'd be sprites for every character - and presumably multiple poses for each? Whatever the pachinko game is, I can't imagine it involves reading through the actual novel. Browsed through that list and didn't recognise any anime but did get a little bummed out at the sheer quantity!

Apothecary Diaries was both way more hilarious and way more heartbreaking than I was expecting it to be. It's really good.

Also I'll always fly the flag for Black Lagoon, but I get that it's got a bunch of shit in it that's gonna chafe hard with folks, for good reason.

Outlaw Star is SO authentic to 80s sci-fi, it also has Harrison Ford romance in that era-vibes (diagnosis: not great). Also some homophobia. Aside from those two things, I think it's great.

Noein has some amazing animation and it goes in some wild directions.

I seem to remember it fumbling the ball towards the end, but it's still funny how forgotten it is now. It was a pretty big deal at the time.

For my hard votes, I nominate Odd-Taxi and Mushi-Shi

Two of the exceedingly rare 10/10 ratings on my MAL profile -- out of like 300 entries, there are currently eight perfect 10s

Umineko part one... I think halfway through. Ten hours in.
HOO BOY, there's some payoff for the slow burn.

I now have no doubt that this will follow a similar structure to Higurashi, because you don't kill off a third of your cast just like THAT with seven parts to go. But man, what a well-executed scene. So glad I'm sticking with the VN for this experience.

I'll probably elaborate in my post-part 1 thoughts, but for now I'll just say...

    Golden slaughterer is a BANGER.

    Umineko's soundtrack is absolutely top-shelf.

By default, the fighting game has one of the best OSTs in gaming history, since it pulls almost entirely from the VN.
