My previous thought about not wanting letters to be too closely spaced together applies even harder to not wanting them to be fused together with each other or other graphical elements.
The "OI" thing is okay, though, but I don't think I'll ever get over thinking like there has to be some sort of kerning issue there even if there technically isn't, due to how ambiguous the real dimensions of the "I" are. The spacing between the inside and the "O" is okay. The spacing between the outside and the "N" is okay. But that can't be right...can it?
edit: To be clear, this isn't talking about the latest image shown. Well, it sort of is, I didn't like that sort of negative space fusion either.
If there's a way to animate the coin spinning, with C on one side and R on the other without the site looking so that it looks like a geocities page, that might be cool.
A quick and dirty 3d printer ready mock-up of one of the logos @localhjay posted near the beginning of the thread. I left the colors similar to the one they posted, but when printed it could be whatever. This one is about 1.5 x 3 inches ( 45x90mm) but it can scale up pretty easily. Whatever logo we end up deciding on i should be able to print pretty easily. I just really like this one because it reminds me heavily of what it looked like when i was a kid and they actually took quarters.
I started to work on something using more negative space because I've always thought it was fun. Then I realized I am terrible at artistic things so I gave up. But because I spent time on it, this is what I was playing around with:

Small Feature request for @Maclay: can you make a temporary .png favicon for Coin Return, it should be 32x32 icon, and can be temporary.
A favicon is the little icon that pops up in the tabs and on bookmarks.
This is because of the (extremely minor, but fun to exagerate) whining coming from the beta forums where we don't have one and our website looks naked.
Doesn't have to be final anything, just something to tide us over.
(correction, it's a 32x32 .png, not a 16x16, I'm old!)

I also made a slight tweak to the full-size version:

Yes, no problem. I have all the versions of the logo I made in vector format so I can take that central part easily at any size:
I'm sorry, what?
Here I was, laboring under the apparent misapprehension that HiT BiT was a pixel artist, and you're here posting about ... vectors?!?
The fundaments of my world, they are shaken.
In this case I made the original versions I posted here using Paint Shop Pro as bitmaps.
But I later traced them using Inkscape. I thought that way that way I could make resize and recolour them easily in seconds.
That said, this is as deep as my knowledge of the subject goes. 😅

The closest seems to be Arial Cyrillic Narrow, based on myfonts.com's "WhatTheFont":
But I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't a typeface at all, or they messed with the kerning and letter spacing to get it to fit.

That looks more rounded at the ends than Arial Cyrillic Narrow does. Might be a function of the printing method and the backlighting, but it doesn't feel right.
If it's a genuine Arcade face-plate, that's probably too old for Arial, right? As Arial was introduced in Windows because they wanted an alternative to Helvetica.
(I always heard for financial reasons, the wiki indicates it was for completely unrelated reasons)
But the R doesn't seem right for Arial, it has the little leg sticking out to the right. It's closer to Helvetica, it does have the R like that.
Seems close, and it's a japanese foundry, and seeing that a lot of arcades are from there?

Other candidates are variations of Swiss 721, Helvetica, and Neue Haas Grotesk.
Swiss 721
Helvetica
Neue Haas Grotesk
I haven't played around with all of these typefaces and their variations to double check. The most enticing option I've seen, though, is Nimbus Sans, because both the INSERT and the COIN line up pretty well - particularly the narrow "C" and "O" and the slight curve at the bottom of the "R". Interestingly enough it is a Japanese font, which kind of makes sense...

Both of these seem somewhat far of, if you consider the capital R is completely different.
I think Inquisitor77 is really close with Nimbus Sans, and it being a Japanese foundry tracks.
I am not surprised that i have not heard of any of those fonts except Arial and Helvetica, but it does amuse me that there is literally nothing people will not nerd out over.

Graphic designer hat on briefly: This one's by far the most solid of everything i've seen proposed. Instantly readable as the name, while keeping a distinct visual style (useful branding in general), good netural color that's still distinctive. Works the visual of Coin return in without getting too clever about it.
Might as well ask: If anyone wants to create 10 png's with a thermometer filling up at several milestones, DM me and I'll share the brief.
I thought I'd work on this on my own, how hard could it be?
But turns out: I just get frustrated because I can't place things how I want them in my mind.
It's for our one-time fundraiser, and will be displayed inline of the post.
so, I've been working on this little customization project. bought this neat keychain here. it's really easy to swap the little "Insert Coin" card out for a custom one.
finally, there was a sticker on the back from the manufacturer, stripped that off. bought some sticker paper from staples, printed out my design, covered it with some clear packing tape to seal the deal.
what am I contributing, you ask? nothing good!
here's a couple of PNGs and some instructions if you wanna make your own.
the font is Nimbus Sans L, except the apostrophe, which is Bahnschrift Light. I did adjust the "25" a bit to get it to look more like the original 25¢. the "est." was handwritten by me.
the logo is the one HiT BiT made, just scroll up a bit. probably should put your own name and title. the name font is Bahnschrift Light, the title at the bottom is Courier New. Of course, you could use whatever fonts you like, pop your favorite quote on there somewhere, fuck with the colors, I'm not your dad.
the dimensions for printing:
1.7cm x 3.2cm coin return button card
2.3cm x 3.6cm back sticker
got all your customized shit printed out? alright, here's how you do the thing. take the back cover off, just a couple phillips screws. then take the circuit board out, once again, two phillips screws. take the button out, it is free now. slide the old insert coin card out, insert the new one. which, by the way you may want to thicken up a bit with some nice, clear packing tape, or you could print the card out on some thicker paper. keep in mind it needs to be a little translucent to be readable with the light on. if it isn't thick enough, it will rattle around and be askew. devastating! oh, another thing, if you have trouble sliding it in, cut a little piece of card you can push it in deep enough with.
as far as the sticker goes, just print it out, apply that sweet crystal clear packing tape over it. burnish it with your bonefolder. oh, you don't own a bonefolder, you aren't a fucking weirdo? ok, well, you could fold up a piece of paper a bunch and use that. you just wanna press that tape onto the sticker, make it real smooth so it stays stuck and protects your print. I trust you remember how to apply a sticker from kindergarten. you are now finished and ready for choccy milk and a nap.

That would be a super cool reward for early backers or just as merch in general. I'd totally buy one or donate for one, especially if I could get my name customized on it. Might be a lot of work though.

I had a thought (uh oh). what if someone has a really long username with no spaces? do we know what the name character limit is going to be? got a couple ideas about how to fit a long name on the back of the keychain, but, it'd be good to know how buckwild these names might get.
