This one gets hailed for its pretty graphics and they hail themselves for their Realm v Realm combat, meaningful PvP and everything else you expect out of a MMORPG these days. Interesting is that there are various difficulties to play the game at and you unlock more as you level up. Depending on your difficulty you will gain more stat-points per level. Not sure if it isn't just an excuse to make people grind more.
I reached the point where they wanted me to download gameguard and decided I didn't want to play it that badly.

A bit off topic, but what does GameGuard does that's so bad? I keep hearing horrible things about it and see it on so many games I play. I keep wondering what horrible things are happening to my computer because of it.
Gameguard/nProtect and the evils there of
Gameguard is an application used by a few free MMOs to make sure you don't cheat, however: this is done in a rather aggressive way, to the point that your system starts to run slower. See for more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gameguard
I remember playing and not hating Lineage 2 during its beta, but not being intrigued enough that I would want to pay for it. Geuss I will check it out.
I follow the games progression because i'm in love with the graphics and aesthetic etc, it's come quite a long way since beta, but it still seems fairly eh
they've added a ton of perks to try to get old players to come back and new players to get into it. Stuff like buffs until level 60, pick up buffs off of monsters, easier leveling, cheaper equipment, a new race, stuff like that
the next update that's coming out pretty soon apparently makes leveling so easy that it'll take you an hour to get to level 20. The faster the leveling the better, since the game revolves around the PvP endgame which starts around level 60 I think?
the only problem is the economy is FUBAR. Bots still run the game, have all the best grinding spots. It's obvious that NCSoft doesn't care about banning them, since they're everywhere and so incredibly easy to spot. Groups of 10 players all with gibberish names "dfkjlalsk;fj" running in perfect unison in perfect lines, sitting down in perfect unison, and attacking in perfect unison. Yeah, i'm sure those are real players
Since everything is so screwy, all of the high level armors and weapons are EXTREMELY expensive, and the only way for a sane person to get them without grinding like mad is to buy gold, which everybody seems to do. Not to mention the cost of keeping up with soulshots, and other mid level armors, though i'm not sure how much that'll matter at first with faster leveling
but yeah, the castle sieges and PvP clan wars/drama is what the high level players claim that makes the game great, I always think that EvE does it and does it way better even though I could never really get into that game
but i'm probably going to play this new update for a month because i'm a sucker

Any chance we could get a list of games that are available for Mac OSX?
Are there any free MMOs for the mac?
That's kind of what I was trying to find out. I haven't really been able to find any so far, and apart from just google searching "free Mac MMO" I don't really know where to look.
I don't have space in this thread to note on what systems each game runs. If someone feels like making a website for me with a wicked search engine I can.
*edit: it should be fairly easy to do, most games have a link on their front page to the system requirements.
The fate of the former Flagship Studios staff is something a number of our readers have been wondering about, particularly after the confusion and drama surrounding the Hellgate: London and Mythos IPs. The writers at Massively have been curious about this as well, until now. We've gotten word from Joystiq that former Flagship Studios Seattle staff -- specifically, the Mythos team -- have formed a new company called Runic Games.
Sweet. I wonder if they're going to try to get mythos back or start something totally new
Guess we'll find out in the next couple days
considering Mythos was very close to Open Beta I don't think they're going to burn a few years worth of work.
Wasn't the problem that they no longer control the Mythos IP, though? I think the "next few days" of project announcements will be new ideas. Getting Mythos back essentially amounts to buying it back, which I don't think they have the resources to do.
NCsoft Austin (a.k.a. NCsoft North America) is on the verge of eliminating all of its development staff. The studio is currently home to the teams behind Tabula Rasa and Dungeon Runners, the latter of which will "be closed".

Poor Dungeon Runners..
Nooooo, Kenz and i are having a lot of fun with it.

I also think a Korean investment company is not going to sit on a piece of almost finished software all day, if this new studio has enough money I am sure they will get their stuff back.
I actually hit up the forums last night since the devs seem to have a pretty good presence there, and they supposedly don't know what the hell the article is talking about. Same with the Tabula Rasa team. But the Dungeon Runners guys seemed pretty confident that they aren't going anywhere. Granted, it might just be the normal PR spin, but it was still nice to hear.
And what level are you guys? I haven't played it in a bit, because it gets kinda nasty soloing later on, but I would love to group up with some people from around here if possible.
In an ongoing attempt to make this list better and better I added some more information to some games, i forgot the exact changes, but lemme tell you... they were so good.
Moving on, I am in the process of starting up Zu Online, a game that looks pretty and hey whatever, sifting through a thread with info on all classes I ran into this line that made me remember why a lot of free MMOs fail to interest people past the tutorial level:
at lower levels they can be boring but once you are level 180 you'll be invincible.
At least the writer is honest about it, but really, they expect you to play through roughly 180 levels to stop being bored with a class? I guess the other classes are more interesting.
Maybe you level with each punch to a creature? O_o
Almost
I got to lev 16 after 1 hour of playing. And it looks absolutely gorgeous, I think I'll bum around a bit more in this game, if only for the art.

Most of the text on screen is advertisement for their cash shop, I believe. The UI looks kind of modern for this game, but if you look at the minimap you see it's made like a painting.
*edit: the ingame currency is called "bone". You ..uh.. you pay in bones.
Wow, it looks very animated. What's the gameplay like? Just random grinding? Mission grinding? Instanced dungeons? I'm very curious now. I hit up DOMO recently and I don't think that one is going to do it for me, unfortunately.

Mission grinding.
Basically: killing a mob gives you ~50exp, doing a quest requiring you to kill 10 gives you 2,000exp and bones and equipment. You get quite a few skills early on to keep things interesting, but I mostly 1hitkill mobs at the moment.
So yeah, I just do quests now, there's flight routes between all quest hubs, so I use those to get where I want. If I am really lost I can go to my quest log and click on the name of a mob/NPC/location to make the game automatically walk me to there (including a Indiana Jones-esque line going over the minimap to draw out the route we're going to take).
Can't get to that from work, but if you're speaking about the Talisman game that was going to be for PSN/XBLA/PC, it was quietly put on hold, and the developer taken off of it months ago. I wouldn't really expect it to come out, unfortunately.

But really, good luck finding a free MMO that's built for OSX too, I've never heard of 'em.
I wouldn't bother with Dofus at the moment, just wait for Wakfu.
Massively also does a twice weekly Mac MMO post:

The lack of anything interesting here tells you all you need to know about MMO gaming on the Mac
Guess we'll find out in the next couple days
Do I see a new lifetime subscription coming out of them?

I don't know what game you're talking about. :P
I doubt this is it since this is a cash shop MMO.
