The thing with Bioware is everything from Baldur's Gate to KOTOR was pretty much the same thing but in a different setting. And now Mass Effect is more of the same only they've tacked on kinda clunky shooter mechanics because games that are not shooters do not sell on the 360.
Which isn't to say Bioware games are bad, because they are all in all pretty fantastic in general.
So basically what I'm saying is if you want to play Mass Effect but have never played a Bioware game before just pick up one of the old ones because it will be mostly the same experience but less expensive and less pretty with less clunky shooter mechanics.
I dunno, the game just seems like a re-hashing of KOTOR to me.
I think you are right about that. But that's a large part of what I like about it, because I loved loved loved KOTOR. I don't mind rehashed games, as my addiction to the Dynasty Warrior franchise proves
I can see how the combat wheel can get clunky. It seems to be a bit of an improvement over KOTOR's skill selection thing, and I actually really liked KOTOR's whole battle system. I'm not far enough along the game where we need to do much more than turn on Shield and blast away with guns, so I can't say much about the combat wheel.

Well from my impression, it seems like you can get through the whole game by doing just that.
I just wish there was more room for depth in combat. For me, it's very bland. Combat just feels like a small obstacle to advance the story.

Wait so you turn out to secretely have been the bad guy in the end in this one to?
The clunky not-a-shooter-shooter mechanic turned me off before I got that far

I think a clunky shooter is still better than a boring-ass half-turn-based reject DnD clone.
They're still working pretty hard to get truly awesome RP and Combat games working separately, combining them properly may not occur in our lifetimes. :P

well KOTOR's biggest flaw was it was retardedly easy
Exactly
In Mass Effect, if you fuck up, you die
In KOTOR, if you fuck up, you...must be playing a different game, because it's near impossible to fuck up in KOTOR.
It's possible to fuck in KOTOR but it doesn't really matter since there will be like 50 medipaks and shields in every room anyway.
I remember I died in my first try of the final fight in KOTOR because the guy's damage per second on me was roughly equal to my healing per second from spamming medpacks.
Here's my new rule:
"It's like Diablo but ____"
"It's like Diablo with"
"It's like Diablo"
Are all phrases that no one, ever, can use to describe a video game. "Diablo" is a binary state. It is either DIABLO or it is something ELSE.
Yeah, I don't really see the comparison between Diablo and ME that some people were apparently making. They just... I mean, I guess they both use an RNG to some extent, and you have stats.

I think that's about where it ends, in my mind.
So many games are described as "It's like Diablo..." and they aren't fucking like Diablo. It's like describing every RTS as "It's like Starcraft...".
Yeah, they just don't seem to be very good at putting in very good stories with RPGs these days.
If I can't get involved in the story, it just becomes a clunky adventure game.
I think ME has a pretty good story. The dialogue is far beyond anything I've seen in a while. The voice acting doesn't make me want to skip every line (this is a first for me). And the overall presentation of the story has been good.
Honestly, I think the writing in the game is ME's strong point, by a long shot.
When was the last time you played a Shadow Hearts game, then?
Well never
was that the one with gay porn?
hmmmm
No, I think that was, uh... Enchanted Arms.
Shadow Hearts are pretty old RPGs that came out for the PS2 about... 4 years ago? I think there were at least 3 of them. My boyfriend and I played through a chunk of the second one "From the New World," and it's just so totally awesome. If you have RPG ennui, I suggest you pick up a copy. They should be going for under $20 now.
They weren't exactly brilliant at making decent stories in the beginning days of the RPG. Final Fantasy 1 was intolerable.
Yeah.
I've never played it, and I really don't plan to.
I still can't figure out what people see in FFVI

Krunk: I imagine that's why anyone cares. That or the graphics. Because the gameplay sounds horribly rehashed. Alas, I will never get to play it, unless it gets a KotOR style game of the year cheapo version around the time I get a new computer a year or two from now.
I have to say my favorite Final Fantasy game is X-2 :P That game is so unabashedly and unapologetically fan-servicey, it's charming. In contrast to all the Final Fantasy games that try to teach you morals and whatnot.

You people and your new-fangled systems.
I still haven't beaten FFT.

The only RPGs I've even finished are the KotOR series and Septerra Core. I usually end up with "Can't be Fucked to Finish the Last Level" syndrome.
Fuck you Sephiroth and your fifteen minute summons causing my computer to crash.
It's not like diablo unless you wear your mouse button out in the first 10 minutes
It's really amusing that most people have never discovered that in diablo, holding down the mouse button accomplishes the same thing as repetitive clicking.
I would always inwardly smile when I saw people playing it and they would be going click-click-click on the monster as if their mouse clicks were the god damn equivalent of sword swings.

Oh snap! No he din't.
I think Kotor's a fine game, with significant flaws
One of those flaws is the combat system.
The other major one is the silly silly morality system where it's "petty childish violence and puppy-kicking" or "pushover public servant."

I really really miss HyperMints.

haha, yeah pretty much.

Sounds about right.
man in the first part of your sentence I was like "shit Bastilla never gave me that option"
You must have missed the secret Mission/Zalibar/Bastilla threeway level.

You can't count JRPGs. Expecting a good story from a JRPG is like expecting a retard to go to college.

Heck if I know. The first Golden Sun game beats any FF I've played so far, and that game wasn't spectacular.
*facepalm*
