Is this "Pre-PAX Vancouver Day" going to happen?
If so, I'm in for whatever we do.
If we're looking for activities, mainly gaming, I recommend Jimz Gamers Lounge. It's basically a LAN center for Xbox 360. They have ~20 stations with a 360, 32" HDTV, and a "gaming chair" with rumble and surround sound. No one would have to bring their own stuff. They also have a PS3 station, a Wii station, and a Rock Band/ Guitar Hero set-up. The place is absolutely awesome, in my opinion.
Port Moody isn't that far in my opinion. I've heard suggestions for PC LAN centers downtown that would work well too.
So, anyone interested? I'm thinking like Tuesday or Wednesday night? If weeknights are tough, we can do this on Friday the 22nd, Saturday the 23rd, or Sunday the 24th.
If anyone's coming to Van on Wednesday and heading down to Seattle on Thursday, you should join me (and others, hopefully) on the Greyhound Thursday morning (8:15 am or 10:50, undetermined yet).
I would love not to drive to Seattle! However I'm in Blaine so I'd have to meet up with you guys somewhere... I think the greyhound stops in Bellingham?
May I suggest everyone go down to the Granville Island Brewery for their tour there?
It costs 10 dollars for the tour and it comes with 4 pitchers of beer for the entire group.
Only downside to this is that its tourist season and anything with the word Granville Island in it is pretty much everyone's first stop. That and the max people per tour is 12.
I'm up for doing something before PAX if you guys want to do a meetup for dinner/drinks or something. I'm free most nights (don't look at me like that, I just like to keep my schedule open...for when all the models call... >.> )
I don't know why anyone goes down Friday morning, other than to save on one night of a hotel.
This is Labour Day weekend, the highest peak of the peak summer lineups will be on Friday morning. I can't even imagine how many hours it will take to get through Pacific Crossing, since Peace Arch is entirely out of the picture for sane border crossing use. I would think it could easily take three hours, at least.
We wouldn't have minded going down Thursday, but the people we're traveling with can't leave then. We will probably be leaving at a ridiculously early hour hoping to beat the lines -like everyone else.
I wouldn't go near Peace Arch that weekend, it will be monstrous.
Even the US Border office says to use Pacific Crossing. I don't know what the Aldergrove/Langley crossing and Abbotsford crossings will be like yet, but the lines might even be worth driving down 0 Ave and using an alternative crossing instead of sitting in a lineup for a couple of hours. Best bet is to be super early though, yes. The lineups for the border will probably start all the way back at 8th Ave & Highway 99 *shudder* I will be contacting three US Border Crossing offices to find out how many lanes each will have open.
I'm also in the works of trying to consolidate another bus group, since there's so many bus people going down on Friday.

That's a good point. We may head down that way, looking at the map, from where we are on a "normal day" it should only take us an extra 45 minutes. Thanks for the suggestion.

I would recommend taking the train up. It may take longer (I say may, because you never know how long you will be waiting at the border crossing) but it is cheaper and much more pleasant. I took the train up last year and it was great. I gamed on my laptop the whole time.

Yes if you guys get a pre-pax Vancouver trip going I'd love to join you for dinner/drinks, if someone wants to pick me up in Blaine I know a shortcut to Canada :winky:
I also know my way to and around Vancouver if you need a navigator to get there (though I think it's really hard to get lost trying to find Vancouver.)
Also, anyone driving from Canada should try Sumas. Usually it's a lot shorter than the truck crossing or the peace arch, but then a few years ago the truck crossing was way shorter than the peace arch too...
Hey I'll be back in Vancouver by then. If you need to know anything about Vancouver and what it has to offer feel free to ask any questions to: da_mainman@yahoo.com
It seems like a lot of Vancouverites are saying "If we're doing something I'll come..." I think we have enough people to start deciding. Here are a few questions to everyone interested:
How does a Wednesday night gaming session sound?
Is Port Moody too far for you?
Perhaps we can go from there. If not Wednesday, then the weekend before. If not Port Moody, than perhaps Granville.
Personally, I would love to have an Xbox 360 LAN with fellow PAXers and give this new "gamer lounge" some business.
I'm very close to granville and have never been to port moody... that being said I could also handle the trip if that's where people want to go. I'm off Wednesday.
So far, Wednesday at Granville looks good. Now, I don't know jack about Granville, so can someone take the reigns on this? What is there to do? What time is stuff open until? ect...
Granville on Wednesday:

So by Granville are you referring to something on Granville Street or the Granville Island Brewery thing?
If you're doing a Pre-Pre-PAX get together anywhere downtown-ish you can count me in. I moved to East Van so that I didn't have to drive anywhere so I wouldn't be as enthusiastic about Port Moody, but I might have an interest in that too. Maybe.
Hell I'd be up for Pre-Pre-Pre-PAX festivites on Tuesday, which would make PAX a full week for me this year. lol.
If some of the original posters (non-Vancouverites) still head up during the day on Wednesday I'd also be up for the whole tour guide thing. And by the way tr0tsky being a tour guide is easy, just point at a random thing and make up stuff about it that sounds impressive. Oh crap, now my secret is out...
I still don't know which Granville everyone's talking about? Brewery, or the streetin downtown as to which there are a lot of bars. Considering it's a Wednesday, it's usually cheap chicken wings somewhere, right? That may be something to consider.
Yeah, I'd like to join in on this as well, lemme know what your plans are.
hey I would be up for going I work in yaletown there is a nice place for wings and beer well at wings at Davie And granville I would be interested in drinks for Wednesday and Thursday but for me port moody is too far foggy dew in coquitlam is good only thing I do more than games is drink beer! Which would be a fun pax game drunk twister!
Well, I live a 20 minute walk from Granville Island... so either way is fine by me.
The brewery tours are for 12 people $9.75 each (4 tasters) and are at noon, 2pm or 4pm- according to their site. Is anyone working Wednesday that's planning on coming? And also... that's a pretty small group considering there are already about 9 people who have said they're interested (I'd assume there are some significant others).
Anyway, this is only off their site, if anyone has a more personal experience, please speak up.

Is that the "Irish Pub" by the Ramada? Morrissey's or something like that?
On the thought of Yaletown, the Yaletown Brewing Co. (its a pub on Mainland) has a guitar hero night every month (and crappy bar food) ... anyone know if their guitar hero night might conicide with the Wednesday before PAX? That might be a good way to cap off the evening.

Also keep in mind that its summer. And summer means tourists. And tourists go to Granville Island. The brewery is at Granville Island.
Its not even a guarantee that 9 of us could get in.
I know it's not the best Chinese food and many people consider it a disgrace to be called Chinese food, but I know that one thing I'm 100% doing is stopping by Hon's and getting some potstickers
No this is a different place, some of the best chicken wings in Vancouver, corner of Davie and Granville you can get like 5lbs of wings for like 24 dollars and a pitcher of beer for like 10 bucks pretty popular place.
I think for the Yaletown brewery it is either Monday or Thursday for the guitar hero night but I cant remember i'll check when I'm going to work tomorrow morning.

Are you talking about Two Parrots? That pub across from Blenz coffee? If so, then yeah that place is pretty cool.

I moved to Vancouver from a rural part of Atlantic Canada, back there most of the "Chinese" Restaurants let you susbstitute French Fries in place of Rice in their combo plates. After that I'd find it hard to classify any of the restaurants out here as a disgrace. Sure a lot of them only serve MSG, and some serve rat fried rice with a side of MSG, but disgrace is such a strong word.

I was thinking that it was either Wednesday or Thursday nights, pretty sure its not on Mondays. However as we both thought it might be Thursday or another night, logic would dictate that it's probably Thursdays. In which case we'd have to do that the week before PAX, so unless anyone is up for Pre-pre-pre-pre-PAX festivities, its probably a dead idea....
Count me in. Whoever's organizing this, please send me a PM and I'll give you my phone # so we can communicate off-forum if needed.
I'm not sure if anyone is actually organizing this yet, however if you are giving your number out... :winky: (sorry lack of sleep made me do it. lol)
Seriously though, that's a good point. Is there someone officially organizing this? Or someone who wants to? Or someone that doesn't want to that we can sucker into doing it?

What's wrong with rat! It's more authentic! I kid, I kid! Pretty sure I have relatives in the Philippines that have eaten dog and cat in their life time
I know Suds 'n Spuds (?) is right next to Hon's. They're pretty good for dinner and drinks, but then I don't know Vancouver as well as someone who has a watering whole right in there.
Oh, so... probably not the Graville Brewery then? That's the impression I'm getting. I'm honestly down for anything...
Any other suggestions then? Foggy Dew in Coquitlam, Angrytofu? That's farther than Port Moody's Gaming Lounge... so I think that's too far for some people.
If we can work it, I'd still love to go to Jimz Gamers Lounge. Drinking sounds equally as good, so I won't have a preference.
EDIT:
If we decide to do anything on the Port Moody/ Coquitlam side, I'll gladly attempt to "organize" it. I know Jim from the gamer lounge, I'm sure we'd have fun there... (ie. BYOB, if we wanted) I'm unfamiliar with downtown, so that's out of my league.

I was trying to play Picross with the people in my car...having to move forward every couple mins was my handicap

that being said, a vancouver pre-thursday PAX meet-up would be cool.
I've been here for two years and couldn't really show you anything - but I'd be glad to tag along. I'm off work starting Wednesday before PAX.

Port Moody is a tad distant; I'm much happier with Granville, but if the majority is out that ways I'll deal with it.
