I know in the old trades of Man of Steel vol. 2, there was an introduction by Ordway who wrote that he had terrible writer's block, which made him stop writing Adventures of Superman after 10 or 12 issues.
Adventures of Superman has always been the afterthought book, I would say the best it ever came to being a big league book was when Kesel and Grummett were on the series.
Is the Time and Time Again storyline considered good? I thought it sounded cool but never read it. Maybe you guys already mentioned it and I don't recognize it.

Jurgens had a very good Superman run, and so did Roger Stern on Action Comics. It's just that they were in the 90's where events and gimmicks reigned supreme.
I'm not ignoring those issues, just highlighting that those 2k era stories, where it was a clean break and the Super books only interacted with each other, those were the best.
Not to get off-topic, but I noticed a headline right below the Superman story that said something like "Home ownership falls to 10 year low". Wasn't the economy much better 10 years ago? How does that make any sense?

Also, population has grown, so the basement of homeownership will have risen anyways.

Yeah, and lines of credit weren't as easily available as they were from 2002-2008.

Since no one answered this. I can only speak about the last issue. Back then (I was a kid! Barely had money for SNES games and comics), that final issue was awesome. I know that it tried to fix the Legion but that stand alone issue was nice. Especially because:
...the moon blows up!
I don't think I can call it a timeless Superman Story but it's alright.
Life isn’t divided into genres. It’s a horrifying, romantic, tragic, comical, science-fiction cowboy detective novel … with a bit of pornography if you're lucky.
I noticed Alan Moore's "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?" is in trade format now for 15 retail. That a good deal for someone who's never read the story? Do you get anything extra with it?
TLB is right on this one, it's kind of silly not to get that DCU Alan Moore trade instead. That thing is fucking rad.
It's got all of his Superman stories, plus all of his Green Lantern short stories (including the Blackest Night one), plus a couple one-offs from other series that are just fantastic and work completely stand alone even if you have no idea who Adrian Chase is.
Dammit I'm conflicted on whether to get the Absolute All-Star Superman. On one hand I'd be nuts to pay 100 retail for something I can get 26 retail in trade format, but the fact that the Absolute edition has deleted scenes almost makes it worth it for me.
BTW I've already read the story but traded in the single issues for credit at my LCS.

Is the Absolute edition including the proposed but never published one-shot filled with art by Chris Weston?

If you decide to get the Absolute you can get it for 59.99 at Tales Of Wonder, which is about 8 bucks cheaper than Amazon.
Has JMS done a lot of moralistic, didactic work on social responsibility and related themes, or did that only start recently? His Brave & the Bold issue featuring Brother Power the Geek, a love letter to the boomer generation and hate mail for the twitter generation, is the only other story I can think of that resembles Grounded.

Well what people wrote about the Flash Blackhawk issue was that it was a praise of the greatest generation while trying to deal with Barry actually killing baddies, and it was incredibly contrived.
After reading through both JMS's Superman issues at my LCS, I've decided I won't bother with his Earth-1 Supes book either, no matter how different it is. Using the $19.99 I saved I bought a Domo-kun back pack. I'm confident I made the right choice.

I don't know if they're up in trades but stories I liked when I was a kid were:
-Krisis of the Krimson Kryptonite (this ends with Clark and Lois's Engagement)
-Day of the Krypton Man
-Panic in the Sky
-The whole Exile in Space
There's numerous one shot stories here and there during that era of Superman that I loved.

I can't believe something like that actually happened.

But don't joke about it being #702.
That's really cool.

This is probably Superman's fault.
"What are you going to do about these wall street bankers Superman?"
I'd like to think Supes would also bitch at the people who bought homes knowing they couldn't afford them.

I'm not that naive
Men weren't meant to ride
with clouds beneath their feet
Savin' the world from Solomon Grundy
-Alan Moore
it has Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow
plus the Killing Joke
plus For The Man Who Has Everything
plus Mogo Doesn't Socialize
and it's only 5 dollars more
it has everything Alan Moore wrote for DC proper
there is so much in that alan moore trade
there is an amazing clayface story
a baller vigilante story
some sweet green lantern stuff
and it is only 5 dollars
if you won't pay 5 more dollars for triple the content, you are crazy
So it's basically all the Alan Moore Superman stories.
It does have one of the saddest Krypto scenes ever ever.
It's got all of his Superman stories, plus all of his Green Lantern short stories (including the Blackest Night one), plus a couple one-offs from other series that are just fantastic and work completely stand alone even if you have no idea who Adrian Chase is.
Soooooo good. I realize it was only a separate incarnation of him but now I just want to read some more supes.
BTW I've already read the story but traded in the single issues for credit at my LCS.
