I just rented Dead Rising, and it's pretty interesting. I know the game is two years old, but I've never played it. I remember it sitting at Blockbuster and me just walking past it for over a year. The graphics are nice, still nice after two years, the voice acting is ok, but the controls are a little wonky. Dead Rising suffers from the Resident Evil syndrome where you have to stop to aim your weapon, so while you're trying to headshot a dude, another one comes strolling up behind you and takes you out. The game isn't easy, I've died more then a few times. I remember reading how escorting survivors was a pain, and it really is. Nothing like having the dude following just stand there stuck on a door while zombies slaughter you.
The only boss fight I did was the first Carlito one, but I've already read about the story. The save system is starting to grate on my nerves, but I'll keep on going. I wish there was an true unlimited mode where you could just run around the whole mall trying to save as many survivors as you can for as long as you can. From what I've read and heard about on these forums, Capcom missed a lot of opportunities.
Did I say something wrong in my post? Trust me, I don't want to start any controversy; I'm enjoying the game. There's just something cool about breaking into a fitness shop at one health, grabbing some dumb bells and then fighting your way to the food shop.
The game rocks. If you get stuck, fail, whatever, just start over. You're more badass than before, you are learning the layout of the mall, it rocks. It's something like RE4 to me, where playing it over and over is part of the fun, not a penalty. So, approach it that way mentally and I think you'll enjoy it more.
I found guns to be useful only for bosses, so I would keep one or two around all the time (easier when you have more inventory), but the real fun is murdering hordes of zombies with chainsaws, axes, gumball machines, etc. My favorite weapon is the Fire Ax, which was pretty hard for me to find (I think in one of the hardware stores), but it's so gleefully gory that it was worth it.

I wish there were options to change zombie behavior. I want to be able to make it so that every zombie in an area comes after me instead of waiting for me to get within a certain distance. Making them faster would be fun.

Isn't this a core feature of the game? You just continue after blowing a story mission and you can keep playing/rescuing until the helicopter arrives.

correct. But it involves playing the game through to the end a couple times.... which isn't so bad really.

Capcom already makes that game. It's called Resident Evil.
Picked this up last week after putting it off for so long and as fun as slicing and dicing and smashing zombies is for the first hour or so I fucking hate it. I hate the save system, I hate the escorting, I hate the fucking idiot constantly on the radio every 3 fucking seconds, I hate the fact I feel as though I have no time to experiment or explore without jepordising the main story, I hate the fact that weapons break after just a few uses( A fucking katana should not break after a dozen uses), I hate the gun aiming, etc, etc.
I tried to like it but in the end I just threw my hands up in the air and said "Fuck it." As I just wasn't having fun anymore. If I'd paid full price for this I would have been pretty pissed.
I'm really loving the use anything you find aspect of the game. Even though it sucks when your sledgehammer of doom breaks, it's cool when you break into a store, grab whatever you can find, and get back into the fight. The whole you're outmanned and under equipped part is my favorite part of most games. Sure, you eventually level up and kick tons of butt easily, but there's nothing like seeing 20 enemies on screen and wondering how you can get past them. If I ever create a game it's going to focus on the aspect that you're sent somewhere with only a weak pistol or something, and you have to find everything else you need to survive. Eventually you'll have the super assault rifle of doom, but you have to work your way there.
The first time I picked up a gumball machine and threw it at a horde of zombies I knew I was going to have a blast screwing with them. (Wha Wha Whoooa they all fall down...stupid zombies):D

It's still not a "true unlimited". There's that mode where you starve to death, and the normal story mode that is limited to 3 days.

I haven't played in some time so I don't remember where to find it, but isn't there a book that triples the life of edge-based weapons? After you pick up one of those, once you kill the (boss spoiler)
Clown with the dual chainsaws,
you're pretty much an unstoppable machine for quite a while.
People that don't like this game, why do you hate fun?
Oh, I love fun, in fact had the game let me have fun I would have enjoyed it considerably, however they insist on harrassing me evey few seconds telling me to do things I might do if I feel like it and if I have the audacity to get hit they call back chewing me out for being rude.
I would also have had fun if after making progress I could save the game before running into pack of psychos/zombies who tear me apart making me go back and redo all the hard work I'd just put in.
I'd also have had fun if I could chose when to start a mission instead of having to either A) rush about trying to get to an allocated location in time for the mission start or face having to reload the game, or grind zombies or do repetive escort missions to pass time before I can get on with the story.
I can forgive most of the other things but these three ruined the game for me. All I want is to be able to have fun exploring the mall, killing zombies and taking missions on when I'm good and ready. Not having to worry about cocking up the story and having to start the game from scratch because I fail one mission or save at a bad time meaning I can't reach the mission start in time.

Triple booking the small chainsaws removes 95% of the 'fear' you may experience being surrounded by zombies.
And I think you find the book you're thinking of (for edged weapons anyway) or at least one of them in Bachman's in the first area.

wow. . . I've never seen a thread come full circle in less than 6 posts before!
I still have to play this game. Rented it when it came out and I had a 27" SDTV, couldn't read the text so I put it off until I had a better display. Enter 47" HDTV, Dead Rising doesn't show up in local stores anymore. :_(
