I'm perplexed that the Macross franchise has not come up with a space sim that is as good as Freespace 2. I mean, everything is there. The space dogfights. The big capital ships firing all manner of small and huge beams, kinetic weapons, and flak. The evasive weaving in and out of fire. Hell, double fire a Hornet missile pod and it kinda looks like a Macross missile barrage. All it needs is the transforming space jets. Seriously, why hasn't this been done?
I think the problem comes from the use of the variable fighters. Could you keep the tight controls together in the GERWALK and Battleroid modes? Battlecry was good for the Gamecube, but the controls felt sloppy once you stopped firing missiles mid barrel roll.
So I've been playing through the FS1 campaign and have been noticing some bugs during the training missions. In one where I was supposed to dodge missiles and use countermeasures, the ship never fired any missiles, but I stilled passed. In another where I was supposed to order my wingmates to disable a ship, they would just sit there beside it. I would order them individually and they would start to turn towards it, fire, and then turn back away. Ordering them to destroy it then ordering them to disable it again caused them to wake up. Now I'm kind of stuck. I'm supposed to use heatseaking missiles, but my ship isn't equipped with any missiles.... Unfortunately this one doesn't seem to let me past. Guess I'll check the forums.
I've had those issues in the FS2 tutorials. Firstly when you're fighting 'unarmed' drones to get you used to your weapons, and the drones start firing back at you. Then they bring in a frigate to test your countermeasures, and the thing just flies in, sits there, then flies out. No missiles launched.
I've also seen some pretty suspicious wingman AI where they just fly into each other while in formation and don't seem to do anything about it. Was wondering if there's some issues like this as the reason why I found medium difficulty much harder than I imagined, or if I've really just forgotten how to fly

Personal experience note: I never had any issues with the tutorials, and the only AI bugs I've had is whoever is in the "Alpha 2" slot is a suicidal dipshit. (3.6.9 EXE and VPs here)

Looking for a DX:HR OnLive code for my kid brother.
Can trade TF2 items or whatever else you're interested in. PM me.
I'm running the .10 VPs and using the GOG version of the game, if that matters any.

I also had a bug in the mission where you have to escort the Plato and it gets ambushed by Shivans (the first combat encounter with them). It may just be the mission script, but the Plato is trying to make it to a jump point. We kicked some Shivan ass and they made it there.... and just sat there. I probably fought Shivans for 15 minutes before they finally whittled down the thing and it blew, causing the escape pod to launch and jump out.

There's a SEXP that should have triggered before then, causing the Plato to go pop.
Probably just a bug caused by some external circumstances.
Question.. do any of these updates cause Hornet missiles to be bugged? Because I've not had a single swarm hit anything smaller than a frigate, and even that was just because they get in the way. Damned things always swerve off and miss at the last second.
I mean always.

The Beyond the red line mod, just how good is it?
I love the concept of getting to shoot some frakkin' toasters, but i'd appricate the input of anyone who's played with it. Esp in terms of stability and how it plays.
I don't like Hornets, 'cause they fly lag pursuit and hence never hit anything smaller than a cruiser. :P I much prefer Harpoons. Although I really do love using Hornets against cruisers just 'cause it looks cool - I love seeing missile salvos impacting cap ships. :P
As for Beyond the Red Line, I really like it. The flight dynamics are just a tad different from FS2 in that they're using this pseudo-Newtonian model, but it's really enjoyable. Their demo missions are top notch, too, complete with well-done voiceovers. Right now, they're officially using a 3.6.9 build, so it's pretty stable. I'm actually currently running it on a 3.6.10 build (mostly for widescreen support) and it's working out just fine; I'm not at home at the moment so I'm not sure which build specifically.

Hornets aren't that great against fighters. A: They're slow, B: They don't turn too fast, and C: Countermeasures will almost ALWAYS fuck em up.
My guess is that the AI is going "Holy SHIT there are 8 missiles coming at me! COUNTERMEASURE COUNTERMEASURE COUNTERMEASURE".
They're excellent for killing turrets though.
For anti-fighter swarmers, pack Tornadoes.
EDIT: Hornets are also good Assault Fighter or Bomber weapons. Two volleys of double-fire will generally ruin them, as the bigger ships can't out-maneuver or dodge them with countermeasures nearly as effectively.
Now that I think about it I never played the Freespace expansion. Is it worth repurchasing Freespace with the expansion included from GoG.com or should I just stick my $$ somewhere else?

See this is against bombers. I've watched them in, they fly, get close, then rather than hit the ship, they veer off to try and come around from behind or something. Then they just go AWOL and explode.
Guess I'll revert to using them against turrets instead
My Hornets work fine. This in plain, vanilla FS2 w/MediaVPs?
Silpheed: No, not really. It's really a bunch of missions smushed together with the barest amount of plot possible. A lot of them were merely contest winning missions.
They're kinda fun, but the last mission is just plain stupid.
Hm. I'll do a bit of investigation then. I'm currently running through the FSPort campaign again, so I don't have an active FS2 campaign. I'll run through the 53rd tonight, if all goes well.
Also, we DO have multiplayer options, and I have a new flight stick so I can actually play now. Check the OP for information.
I could use some help with the Freespace 1 controls. It seems that the tab key doesn't give me any afterburner boost. I recall reading a long time ago that you needed to add something to the command path or so. Does anyone what I need to do?

Uh
Check the controls? I don't remember the default FS1 controls because I haven't played it in about 9 years.

Yes, I've checked the controls, I simply just don't get the boost when I press tab.

No clue.
Honestly, no clue. My expertise is limited to FS2. I'd try Google, maybe someone else has the same problem?

I'm sorry I'm not more help.
No worries. Hell, I just discovered that the "forward" button during briefings doesn't work either. Guess I need to check out the FS Open forums since it seems that I have some kind of weird ass conflict with my system:x
Wait this is the FSPort? That's REALLY strange, then.
You may want to file a bug report or something.
No, it's not the FS Open port, I just recalled that their forums had a giant readme topic in their forums that dealt with the more common problems with Freespace 1+2 on modern computers.
Everything is going fine, escorting these three ships through an asteroid field towards a jump node. Then a cruiser jumps in out of nowhere and I'm told it's the GTVA Colossus. I start thinking It's not THAT big, what's everyone scared about? so I target it... I notice it looks like a normal cruiser at 10,000km away.

Oh yeah, Alpha 2 was such a retard in that mission. He decided to match speed with one of the forward freighters while the freighter behind him slowly creeped up and wedged him between the forward prongs.

I can't play right now, unfortunately. Perhaps tomorrow.

Please tell me we're playing tonight.
Your attendance will be mandatory in 30 minutes.
When I return, I expect to be schooled. Hard. In the face.

I do not want to be on the wrong end of that.
Then you'll be REALLY fucking scared!
We decided to tell command a bomber got him.
"Yeah Command? Uh, one of our interceptors was hit with a Cyclops"
"...HOW?!"
"Uh... Command? We got a little fender bender here."
"How so pilot?"
"Ok I lied, it's a pretty big one. Alpha 2 doesn't look so good anymore."
I mean, the Boanerges class is useful for one thing: Ramming. Lower maneuverability, fewer gun mounts, less missiles.
But it rams things nicely.
