Deus Ex is pretty awesome

I've never been much of a PC Gamer. I never had a decent rig until about 5 years ago. My first gaming experiences came from renting the SNES and Genesis in the mid 90s, and the first machine I actually owned was a Nintendo 64. I've never played Starcraft or Half-Life or Diablo. Say what you will about my gamer credentials in that light, but it's the truth.

I found myself playing Deus Ex because of Beyond Good and Evil, of all things. Or rather, because of buying BG&E from Steam. I've lusted for that game ever since it broke the cult gaming circle years ago, but I have never seen it in any stores around my area. Not for Gamecube, not for PS2, not for PC. Never. But when someone threw up a thread a month ago about how Steam was selling BG&E for $5, well that was a deal I could not pass up. I registered Steam and bought the game, and it was amazing. Moreover, I now had an online market place resting comfortably in my computer, so naturally I started browsing.

I've always heard it said that Deus Ex is one of the best games ever made, but I never paid much attention because, as I said, I've never been much into PC games. As an outsider to that particular culture, the entire process has always seemed finicky and forbidding to new entrants, which helped me to steer clear. But Beyond Good and Evil was a great experience, and it played well on my machine, so I figured, why not? I like FPS's, I like RPGs, and I like Cyberpunk, and for its reputation, Deus Ex encapsulates all of those things. How could I go wrong?

$10 later, I'm on Liberty Island. Whoever said that this particular level is a really poor introduction to the game was right on the money. It's huge and sparse and you have very little guidance to go by. You have no equipment, and the overarching experience is so much different from anything else I've ever come by that it's disorienting. But I stuck through it and persevered.

By the time the Ambrosia mission rolled around, well, I understood.

So, in honor of a newbie to the game and to PC Gaming in general discovering this masterpiece, here's a Deus Ex thread. Reminisce about it, praise its genius and offer advice to folks just getting started. On that note, here's a question that's been bugging me for some time:

Is there a way to store excess inventory that might need for later? I dropped an Augmentation Upgrade in my office before a mission to free up some inventory, thinking it would stay there, but I returned to find it gone.

How convenient, I just started a playthrough of this yesterday.

The only way to store stuff is in your inventory; but if you were at UNATCO with the canister, why not just put it in right there? Make room for those; and for the upgrade canisters. Throw away grenades or just about anything else to make room for them. Once you've been playing the game for a bit, you get an idea of which inventory items are critical and which are not. The inventory is cramped, but in the end, it's exactly what you need.

You'll find that Liberty Island, on subsequent playthroughs, is much more fun. The second time you're familiar with the controls and the AI, you'll be ready to explore a bit more. And there is so much fun stuff to find there.

This is my 6th-7th playthrough, and I'm still finding new stuff. It's really great.

EDIT: As a note, it might be of interest to read a GameFaqs Augmentation Guide -- Not to find out where they are, but to find out how valuable they are. I made lots of poor choices with the augs my first time around that led to the eventual abandonment of that save. It's not required, of course, but might might be nice to see lists and get an idea of what's available for you. Then again, maybe you want to experience it as it comes.

Well, the only Augment I had at the time was one that enhances Melee power, and my general Melee strategy (sneak up on a dude and hit him with the baton in the head) didn't necessitate an upgrade for that. I wanted to save it for something more useful.

In retrospect, I should have gone for the heavy lifting augment instead of the melee one. I guess I should look for some kickass melee weapons then.

I grew up with Deus Ex around the time it came out. So many fond memories. The music in particular is absolutely amazing and it completely encapsulated the game for me back in the day. The story, the conspiracies, the characters... they're all great.

Although, there ARE some rather poor voice acting in the game from time to time but generally pretty good across the board. The whole light RPG elements with your skills and augmentations was just ahead of its time in terms of genre bending. Not to mention that the story is actually STILL fresh and perhaps, scarily enough, relevant to IRL modern times as it is...

Oh, and here's a tip: if you decide to also buy Deus Ex 2: Invisible War... pretend you never played Deus Ex to begin with... it makes the pain a little easier to bear.

It's just... terrible. But, I did enjoy the story so if you want continuation of the Deus Ex universe then I'd still buy it. Just don't expect to have too much fun with it. But, anyway, this thread is about how awesome the first Deus Ex is... and I almost want to go back and play through it again right now if I hadn't done that last month. :)

Ah ha! I don't have to reinstall Deus Ex because I've already reinstalled it from reading a different Deus Ex thread from a couple days ago! Take THAT you bastards!

Joking aside, I was late in experiencing Deus Ex as well and I have never encountered a similar experience in any other game. Unless you use a guide or are some sort of gaming prodigy, you can play the game 3-4 times and still be finding interesting/significant items, information, and ways to get around.

If I may make a suggestion, you might want to start over with the Shifter mod. As well rewarding you with XP for things like sneaking proficiently or nailing headshots, it also consolidates and modifies a few augs. Thus it is harder to waste invaluable canisters on augs that prove to be worthless. Normal Deus Ex is 120% playable and enjoyable without any mods, but the Shifter mod adds some very nice tweaks. For example, the original Deus Ex has separate augs for attack strength and lifting strength. With the Shifter mod, both augs are more logically combined into one useful ability. It's not gamebreaking, just a common sense change.

I was fortunate enough to play IW before the original game, so I actually got a good deal of enjoyment out of the game. No, it really wasn't worthy of being a sequel to Deus Ex, but it's actually not a horrible game. I would've been just as pissed as everyone else if I'd have played Deus Ex first; a lot of the fan anger towards IW is pretty justified.

The last mission I finished was recovering the Ambrosia vaccines from the Helibase. I labored over the moral choice at the end. I literally didn't know who to believe. I went with my gut, and that's really not something that I've really had the chance to do in a lot of games.
I let Lebedov live, then Manderley yelled at me.

My problem with IW was how retarded of game design it was... seriously, one ammo for all weapons? Totally. Fucking. Retarded.

First of all, thanks for the totally useless spoiler tags.

Second of all, separate ammo types would not have made that game fun.

    Ah yeah. Did you...
...kill Anna Navarre? I love to off her there. I'm not sure if you can leave Lebedev alive and not killer her; never tried it.

Also, saving upgrade canisters is a pretty good idea; there are points in the game where I have two or three stacked up waiting to use them on a certain aug (not one specific one, but I have a few I like to upgrade).

Yeah, that moment is a real gutwrencher.
If you hang around after leaving, Navarre kills him. He can survive if you take matters into your own hands, though.

I attempted to play Deus Ex when it was made free on Gametap. About every 30 seconds I would be unable to do anything for 2 seconds and if I was moving I would keep on moving. I don't know if it was a problem with the game itself or Gametap, but it made the game unplayable.

Also, I forgot to mention: Your first augmentation, it gives either Lifting Strength or Combat Strength. Let us note that Combat strength is definitely the way to go, because of Wiggles.

The thing about Deus Ex, and I've said this before and god damn it I'm going to say it again, is that it does things with level design and non-linear gameplay that no other game before or since has managed to do

Not to mention being able to manipulate the storyline and figure shit out far before you're actually "supposed" to

I mean Christ, if there was ever a game that deserved the title of "masterpiece" it's Deus Ex
