Guys, help me! I can't win on Sturzdorf as US vs Wehr to save my life! It seems like the entire Wehr strategy hinges on getting a 42 into the building to the left of the center VP and it always works against me. Even when I'm winning map control and winning engagements in the early game, that fucking building just shuts me down entirely, regardless of which starting position I'm in--it gives control over 2 VPs and a half-dozen strat points.

I've tried all the counters I can think of--rushing to M8, mortars, snipers, nades, etc, but it seems like every game ends one of two ways. Either I regain control of the center area and then a quick Ostwind or PIV appears and I've got nothing to defeat it, or I lose even faster by getting bogged down trying to retake the center until the Ostwind or PIV shows up.

What should I be doing differently?

If it's any help I can play fine with Ventrilo.

If you look at Kodachrome's stats you see he's ranked pretty high for Automatch 2v2s. Like, he was playing those back when those were the only ranked 2v2s, when you couldn't have your own team.

So random people would just get matched with Kodachrome.

That seems like the kind of thing that would have been fun. Last time I tried a random 2v2 (looooong ago) I got matched with some sort of half-monkey, half-brick hybrid that walled himself into his base with pioneers.

    hahahahaha

I had a teammate, in the first 5 minutes, build three mortar pits in a line at the rear of the "Rails and Metal" map. People, please. Learn to actually play first.

    -Do the tutorial, then
    -Single player campaign, then
    -Skirmish vs. CPU, then
    -Basic match multiplayer, THEN
    -Automatch.

On the plus side, my journey to my first silver star for US is going very well. Just bumped fellow staff friends and US specialists down further on the ladder in my quest. Thinking I'll get there tonight easy.

That's why I like getting into an RTS at the very beginning. You can be a nub and it's ok because everyone else is a nub too. I remember when the community discovered flanking MG42s in buildings. Before that we thought mortars and snipers and armor were the only ways to clear them, lol.

Game against a level 15 wehrmacht defensive player. Doomfox is really annoying if you let him sit still because he throws up a wehrmacht simcity in seconds. Might want to watch it if you're getting into US (CAPTAIN K).

You know it's a lot easier to make comments and criticisms about someone's playstyle, but when you're in the fucking game it's a pretty difficult to correct mistakes.

It was ridiculous how ineffective that medic bunker actually turned out to be--it seemed like he was going to get a momentum swing from all those strafing runs that happened less than half a screen away from the medic bunker but then the new grens would just die within seconds too.

    I am running this on:
    9800GT
    3 gigs of ram
    AMD 64 X2 4800+(dual core)

Why oh why does it still not want to run well in 1280 by 768? I get dips as low as 15 frames per second. And my average is around 45.

For reference, I saw a youtube video of someone testing out their system with a 8800gt, 1280 by 1024, with everything else on high, even the model detail. Their average fps was 71.

edit: Taking off drectx10 and putting it to high gave me a serious bump in performance. Also, I think it looks a lot better now. Weird.

So I've been playing skirmishes against the PC to try to get the feel for the game. I'm doing ok, it's just different than other RTS's I've played. I'm having trouble finding the flow of the game. When I should upgrade, how many units I should be producing etc... Like in a game of C&C or Warcraft I have a general sense of how many units I should have and how fast I should be upgrading.

It's just a little different here b/c the resource system and the way units work is different. Is it uncommon in real (read: against people) matches to have only infantry for the first 10 minutes or so? Or am I neglecting upgrading? When playing against the PC I would usually have 2-3 eng squads and 2-3 rifleman squads running around, then get a sniper and a heavy machine gun and go from there (I was playing US). That sound right or should I be focusing on pushing to cars/tanks faster?

Just trying to get a feel for how typical matches play out, as in.. if I played like this online would 7-8 minutes in all my guys get runover by 15 tanks :)

Only infantry for 10 minutes is perfectly normal for US and WM; for Brits they sometimes get a Bren carrier and for PE they generally get some halftracks. Watch some replays/shoutcasts (link in OP to GameReplays.org) to get a good feel for when to build certain things. I remember that as being one of the biggest things I learned; when to tech up to the next tier and how many riflemen to build and stuff.

And toons you're running basically the same computer I am and I also get a good 71 FPS average on full maximum 1440x900. Must be the DX10.

Relic simply did not have the manpower to correctly code for DX10. I had to take it off because I kept getting black screens (with the UI still showing) mid-way through games. I have no idea if they fixed the massive bugs, but my buddy says it still kills performance way more than any other game.

Step 1: Rifleman squad get shot behind cover or in building.
Step 2: Engineers with flamers sneak around the side.
    Step 3: ???
    Step 4: Profit.

Other options include a sniper (make sure to have someone spot for him), a mortar (meh who needs spotters), an M8, or a tank. Or two rifle squads, with a grenade in place of the flame engineers. Or Rangers/Airborne with Fire Up.

This is more or less correct. The only other variables in the equation are potential secondary MGs or volksgrenadiers. Then things get a little fancy. Or god forbid a bunker.

Countering MGs is one of the first things that really forces you to look at the structure of the map. Until you're forced to counter a well-positioned MG, it's easy to stumble around and just learn it as you go.

From one beginner to another, I recommend going in with the mindset that flanking is your only option. Rushing to a sniper, mortar, or M8 can work as long as you have dominate map control, but if you're getting cut off completely you need to take that MG down, and hiding in your base waiting for +10 fuel to trickle in is going to end the game.

Not to mention you want to flush out MGs if you can because you want to put the pressure on Wehrmacht. They're fine to sit back and let you have your portion of the map.. guarantee whatever they can field with their own pieces of the map will destroy whatever you come up with.

I just played 2 friendly matches with Kaliyama from here on the boards until I got pulled off by the GF for family/holiday duty :P. I lost both but oh wells :) I feel the same thing happening to me that happens to me in all RTS games, I do good for the first 7-10 minutes and then it all falls apart as I somehow do something catastrophically wrong ;P

I def need better macro/micro skills. In the early stages I'm good, but as soon as I have to worry about base management, resource management, what to build, and combine that with handling soldiers it just all goes to hell for me :O

Edit: was fun though, which is all that matters :D

The AI also cheats in that regardless of how much territory it has, it will still get huge, huge, huge bonuses to income on every resource and not be limited by fog of war. Playing against the CPUs are an entirely different art form than playing against a player.

High fuel + one major choke points - two destructible choke points = hours of stand-off gameplay and turtling = not fun at all.

I never understand stuff like that. I play ranked game types because I like to find GOOD matches, not so I can somehow get to the top. It frustrates me beyond no end when people do stuff like this, these matchmaking systems WORK as long as people play and win and lose. It's like... people don't WANT the system to work.. but they still want to use it? so bizarre. I like to get to that equilibrium as quick as possible so I can start getting good matches and start slowly improving against equally skilled opponents.
