Pay for Opera, say Nintendo. Browser update to cost 500 points.
Posts
Looks like Nintendo is only dicking over the people who downloaded Opera during the trial/beta/whatever it was, and that was only for a few months nearly two years ago anyway.
It's still kind of a dick move, but it's not dicking over everybody who bought it.
It is dicking me.
Firstly -"Always provided" - is not true. Opera used to cost money, Netscape used to cost money, lots of browers used to cost money. The world didn't come into existence in the past 5 years.
Secondly even in this generation , consoles don't always provide browsers. You can't browse on an X360. You couldn't browse on an XBox, a PS2 or a Gamecube either.
Its funny that people hate having the option of paying $5 for a browser, but are fine with not having a browser at all on the X360.
How? You don't even own the browser.

I have beat Rygar on the NES and many of you have not.
A: "Thing X costs me money!"
B: "Everything has a price. Welcome to capitalism."
A: "BUT IT WAS FREE!"
B: "Are you seriously going to be using it as primary means of Internet browsing? Or even enough to warrant this complaint?"
A: "No, but IT COSTS MONEY! IT SHOULD BE FREE!!!!"
B: "You're just complaining to fucking complain. You're not going to change anything, least of all something with as minor an impact to your daily life as this."
Please continue to stick to this theme until the thread is inevitably locked.
I laughed at this more than I should have...
Congrats, this should successfully explain this to the few people who don't get it yet.

It's the language of futile whining and angry keyboard throwing or whatever of entitled people do when they're informed to be wrong.
And for the past like forever minus a very short time the Wii browser has cost $5
Lot's of people got the browser for free (i.e. did not pay) when it was offered as such for a few months early in the Wii's life. Thus, people who downloaded it back then are now pissed because it looks as if they may have to pay for the upgrade.
We don't know for sure. Either way it doesn't affect me and actually affects nobody whom Nintendo gives a shit about either.
Shame on you PA.
For making this assumption.
I mean.
GAF made this assumption.
I thought you were all better then this.
Wii browser can come in very handy when you need to show people some random youtube clip. It's decent for checking guides in a pinch, and I've used it to post here from time to time. It's my favorite of all the current gen browsers, but that's not saying much.
I will of course erase my old free copy and re-buy this upgrade, then send a check for forty-five dollars in the mail to Nintendo.
Anything less would be an insult to Miyamoto-san.
Go use your free internet browser on your PS3 and PC, you dirty Quebecois hippy. Here in America we pay for shit and we like it.
Same goes for the 360, mind.
It's called having friends who like other consoles. They can and have borrowed my other Wii when they need to play the Nintendo game of the quarter.
It works out well.
This
Does not mean this
I'm pretty sure it means that if you already have the browser, you don't have to pay to upgrade it. People who got the browser for free and people who paid for it look the same to the Wii shop channel. The Wii browser is just in your account.
You people are overreacting to wording on a blog that
A) Doesn't say anywhere that the people who got the browser free have to pay for it
Is just a summary of news from another website, which...
C) Is in another language anyway.
You are inferring something that is not stated from a blog post summary of a website translation.
In other words, CALM THE FUCK DOWN.
I did too. I didn't realize the load time would feel like I was using something worse then a 56k modem.
As far as this? I couldn't care less. Using my wii to web browse seems kinda pointless really. I do wish nintendo would do flash functionality but it could be hardware limited for that. Oh well. thats the way it goes.
But the PS3 cannot even come close to it.
And the DS browser is the shittiest shit ever shat
But the Wii browser is actually not too bad.
What's wrong with the PSP browser? I've not had any problems with it.
Hey, just curious, why exactly should browsers be free?
I mean, some are, but why should they be free, as you seem to be saying? And games, and other "softwares".
Input, screen formatting (which of course is an issue on almost all device based browsing) and a few other things.
Granted, I haven't used one for browsing in over two years.
Also, as mentioned above, the ps3 browser is awful.

Very true.
With geeks today making a lot of stuff for free, just for the fun of doing it or the online cred, it's obvious that a browser isn't something as huge as a full-fledged videogame. It's not as much as browsers should be free because they're browsers, but the way the market has evolved, and the internet, and users, and such, today, browsers are expected to be a free commodity. A ton of things are still being done for free on the PC, not that they HAD to be. But, with the way things are today, a browser, especially a shitty afterthought like the Wii's, should be free.
EDIT: If you seriously think the Wii's browser is better than the PS3's, you've got serious issues. Also, JohnDoe, YOUR side is the overreacting one.
But Microsoft makes you pay for XBox Live Arcade games! The nerve of those people! Making you pay for something that costs money!
Because the time and money invested in the Opera browser for the Wii is certainly as big as those XBLA titles.
But you're right, they should remove the News and Weather channels and sell them instead. We've been way too spoiled. Getting shit for free. Now look at us. We expect our actual games and consoles to be free too, these days. Or we don't.

You can plug a mouse and keyboard in the Wii?

Yes, Opera software, a company of over 400 people put in less effort on their software than random XBLA titles.
