I think people are ignoring this line from the OP:
500 points for the Opera update. Anyone who hasn't paid yet has to pay now.
Looks like Nintendo is only dicking over the people who downloaded Opera during the trial/beta/whatever it was, and that was only for a few months nearly two years ago anyway.

No it isn't. Paying for a browser that is an upgrade of a free one is not reasonable. Hell, paying for a browser isn't reasonable.
Its software that someone spent money developing, testing and deploying. Its worth money. Don't want to pay it? Don't use it. Capitalism at work.
This is just retarded. There are more ways to make money off of a product than simply selling it for money. There is also a reason console developers usually provide free shit instead of nickle and dimeing you to death. There is a reason Opera is free on PCs and the PS3 browser is free. There is also a reason why people expect free shit not to force you to pay for relatively small updates. "lolcapitalism" arguments simplify complex issues into one stupid argument that ignores why people expect this shit to be free.
I would like to know how you expect the companies to know why people aren't spending money on this shit. Bitching about it is a way to tell companies why many people aren't buying their shit.

I've had the Internet since 1996 or so, I don't remember the exact date, and I never paid a cent for any browser ever. Should we stop expecting free firmware updates too? I mean, feeling entitled to something that was always provided for free is "retarded" for sure.
Firstly -"Always provided" - is not true. Opera used to cost money, Netscape used to cost money, lots of browers used to cost money. The world didn't come into existence in the past 5 years.
Secondly even in this generation , consoles don't always provide browsers. You can't browse on an X360. You couldn't browse on an XBox, a PS2 or a Gamecube either.

It's also not completely unexpected. Every current-gen console and handheld (except the 360) has a web browser, but only one makes you pay for it: the DS. Nintendo charging to surf the web is not without precedent.

I don't think we've gotten the official announcement yet, but the hand-wringing comes from some language that says "If you've already paid for the browser, the update will be free".
Lot's of people got the browser for free (i.e. did not pay) when it was offered as such for a few months early in the Wii's life. Thus, people who downloaded it back then are now pissed because it looks as if they may have to pay for the upgrade.
We don't know for sure. Either way it doesn't affect me and actually affects nobody whom Nintendo gives a shit about either.
Once again let me remind everyone that it is Adobe to blame for the lack of small device flash. The bastards hate anything that isn't on a personal computer.
Wii browser can come in very handy when you need to show people some random youtube clip. It's decent for checking guides in a pinch, and I've used it to post here from time to time. It's my favorite of all the current gen browsers, but that's not saying much.

$5 dollars is way too little money for such a gold-standard browser as the Nintendo Wii Opera Browser for the Nintendo Wii. You can watch Youtube on it, for God's sakes.

I did too. I didn't realize the load time would feel like I was using something worse then a 56k modem.
As far as this? I couldn't care less. Using my wii to web browse seems kinda pointless really. I do wish nintendo would do flash functionality but it could be hardware limited for that. Oh well. thats the way it goes.

With geeks today making a lot of stuff for free, just for the fun of doing it or the online cred, it's obvious that a browser isn't something as huge as a full-fledged videogame. It's not as much as browsers should be free because they're browsers, but the way the market has evolved, and the internet, and users, and such, today, browsers are expected to be a free commodity. A ton of things are still being done for free on the PC, not that they HAD to be. But, with the way things are today, a browser, especially a shitty afterthought like the Wii's, should be free.
EDIT: If you seriously think the Wii's browser is better than the PS3's, you've got serious issues. Also, JohnDoe, YOUR side is the overreacting one.

But Microsoft makes you pay for XBox Live Arcade games! The nerve of those people! Making you pay for something that costs money!
