Pay for Opera, say Nintendo. Browser update to cost 500 points.
500 points for the Opera update. Anyone who hasn't paid yet has to pay now.
Suckers.
- New buttons
- Wii Speak Compability
- See your Wii mail from within the browser
- tab cube keeps track of 6 tabs, can be made invisible
- 500 Wii Points
- due out this December
- If you paid for the first version of the browser, you don’t have to pay for this one

f that noise.
How about no. Why would I pay for the inconvenience of a wii browser when I can pay nothing for the convenience of one on the playstation 3 or on my goddamn computer where I do most of my browsing anyway.
If this is true, then I'm perfectly happy. Although true tabbing would be pretty useless since many webpages can nuke the Wii's RAM on their own. If it includes updated Flash support (pretty much the #1 request) then it'll be golden.
As for not getting it for free...well, don't update it and use the free version you have. It's still perfectly functional for basic browsing.
Well, it's a good thing I have a PS3 hooked on the same TV as the Wii so I have no reason whatsoever to pay for this. I even deleted the actual Internet channel that I had for free because I needed to make space.
Is this any surprise? From the nunchuk to wii motion plus to the class controller to the unresellable nature of the Wii Speak Channel, Nintendo has been looking to find low cost/high margin ways to wring every last dollar out of the faithful and their new audience.
Sony became a mockery through stupidity. Nintendo's doing it through malice.
What he said. I'm not about to downplay the benefits of having an effective browser on a console hooked up to your TV - I probaby browse the internet on my PS3 90% of the time - but to charge for the privelige? I don't care if it's five bucks or ninety-nine cents. You're Nintendo, you're richer than God and it's time to take better care of your customers!

I actually like the Wii browser, so I'll probably pay for it. Up until the most recent update, the PS3 wouldn't even load youtube videos, whereas the Wii played them just fine, with the exception of the really long ones.
Hey, if Sony wanted to charge me $5 for a 16x9 supported browser, I'd do it, too. So, I guess I'm just a consumer whore.
Every single current console is guilty of this crap. I guess if we need a thread focusing on Nintendo's abuses, that's fine, but honestly our hobby got stupidly expensive very fast this generation. Accessories cost at least $10 - $20 more than I'm happy with across the board, Live is at least $50 a year, and DLC, VC, Live Arcade, and PSN games sometimes are overpriced to the point of self-mockery (to use Threepio's verbiage).
I'm not surprised by this, because browsing never was a bullet-point feature of the Wii, and if you don't want to pay for it, you'll still have the version you got for free. It isn't like Live which actually is a mostly nonexistent service if you don't pay for it, nor is it a recurring payment.
Seriously, you guys are on the right track by not paying for it if you don't like it. It's our only option these days - it's a limiting option, but that's the price of indignation.
Apparently we're up to Flash Player 10, now, but I can't tell if the infos it gives when I'm right-clicking are the ones from the site's player or from the one installed in my PC. As a result, I have NO idea which Flash Player they're using.
Is this like the Photo Channel 1.1 where it's completely optional, and if you don't update it, you still have a perfectly functional Photo Channel 1.0?
Or is this like the Wii Shop Channel and Nintendo Channel updates, where a screen will randomly appear one day telling you it must be updated before it can be used again? (Only this time, the update costs 500 points.)
Second: Are we sure we're interpreting this correctly? How do we know this isn't more like "If you've never downloaded the Internet Channel before, you'll have to pay 500 points just like you would have had to before this update anyway."? Is this really a 500 point cost to anyone and everyone, regardless of when the original browser was downloaded?
Yeah, now that I read that announcement, it's not really that clear that you'll have to pay for the update. Maybe we should wait a bit for some clarification before we round up the torches.
I find it kinda funny that people are trying to justify nintendo charging for a browser when both sony and microsoft have included one for free. Hell, this is the first time I've heard of anyone charging for a browser.
No it isn't. Paying for a browser that is an upgrade of a free one is not reasonable. Hell, paying for a browser isn't reasonable.
Its software that someone spent money developing, testing and deploying. Its worth money. Don't want to pay it? Don't use it. Capitalism at work.
This is just retarded. There are more ways to make money off of a product than simply selling it for money. There is also a reason console developers usually provide free shit instead of nickle and dimeing you to death. There is a reason Opera is free on PCs and the PS3 browser is free. There is also a reason why people expect free shit not to force you to pay for relatively small updates. "lolcapitalism" arguments simplify complex issues into one stupid argument that ignores why people expect this shit to be free.
I would like to know how you expect the companies to know why people aren't spending money on this shit. Bitching about it is a way to tell companies why many people aren't buying their shit.

Wait did MS add a browser in the NXE? As far as I know the 360 doesn't have a browser.
Even if you do have the pay for the upgrade, I might go ahead and do it. As long as it runs better than the current one, which I do use on occasion to watch Youtube videos on my TV.

So use your PC/PS3 browser then?
The sense of entitlement on these forums is just retarded. It wasn't that long ago that people were paying for browsers on the PC.

Huh?
Guys, don't pay for it. Simple as that. Use the free version you got if you have it.
I think it's retarded to play for online gaming since I get that for free on the PC as well. Hence, I don't and never will have a Gold account. Some of my friends think it's retarded to pay to play emulated NES games when they are free* on the PC, and thus they don't buy old stuff on Arcade or VC. But this generation has proven that you can charge whatever you want for something as long as you control the hardware and the network. If you want it from them, you pay their price.

You can't surf the net on a 360.
Oh........well then...
I'm actually kinda surprised at that. Well, go Sony I guess...

I've had the Internet since 1996 or so, I don't remember the exact date, and I never paid a cent for any browser ever. Should we stop expecting free firmware updates too? I mean, feeling entitled to something that was always provided for free is "retarded" for sure.
No it isn't. Paying for a browser that is an upgrade of a free one is not reasonable.
The browser isn't free. Early adopters got a browser for their services as a beta tester, but that free ride has ended a long time ago (more than 18 months ago?)

Surfing the internet on something that is not an actual PC always comes off as retarded to me. Are people seriously using a console as their (and I'll bold this because someone will surely take this out of context) primary means of accessing the internet?

Actually, it is. Except for the Motion Plus, I didn't actually see any malice in Nintendo's EVUL PLAAAANS like you seem to do.
I have to wonder, though, what does this mean for the DSi browser? Will I get an upgrade I'll have to pay for?
That being said I already bought it way back when.

tabbed browsing when having just one page is slow as shit already? that's a joke.
I have flash movies and videos I want to watch on my TV, damnit.

The PS3 recently got an update which let you play a certain Flash, though I don't remember which.
I do know I can now watch Hulu on my TV though. Is that Flash 9?
First: What kind of update is this?

Not when it's an extra, not a necessity.
Still stupid move if true though.
No.
1- It's not a great browser.
2- Great browsers on PC are free.
Since when is 5$ for a shitty browser, or any browser for that matter, reasonable?
