I honestly tried to like Morrowind. But it was so directionless, characterless and buggy it was like pulling teeth. Hell, the one time I did get into it all the merchants bugged into hating me and I couldn't buy anything anymore.

    I really like Morrowind.

I fucking hate RPG's that move you along the one plot line track. I don't get my kicks being a rat finding his way through the maze.

That said, it is pretty buggy and the artwork isn't that great.

The one thing I really didn't like in Morrowind was the combat. Watching arrows fly through people and not hit them kinda ruined playing ranged characters for me.

I had an okay time with morrowind. I decided to work for the army, and advanced through the ranks and then I took out th head of the army in a duel to become the general and then...I was the general. And I couldn't do shit with it. No politics, no troops, not even a lackey.

I quit the game right there.

The flipside to that is I don't like games that give your character no reason to be doing what he's doing. You're an ex-con dropped off on the island. There's something the government who imprisoned you wants you to do.

Why do I care? Because I really don't. So I felt no connection to the character, even after sinking 5 or 6 hours in before the merchant bug took away the only fun I was having.

You know, I've seen a few local bands perform in clubs, I'm friends with one of Calgary's more successful ones, and I have yet to see any of them cover game music. That would be the best thing ever.

    Do a set like:

Hell March (Zen's link made me think about this)
Something from Quake 2 like Operation Overlord
    Otherworld (From FFX)
    Duke Nukem Theme

Meh. I guess it depends on your propensity to create backstory and motivation for the character you are playing.

I'm someone who really likes creating characters. Often I don't finish RPG's because I get an idea for another character and start over.

If someone is telling me a story, why do I need to create the characters for that story? When I write something, I don't expect my audience to fill in the blanks for me.

Eh. KotOR had a pretty good balance here, as did Planescape.

The trick is to HAVE a story.

So they've moved us all to billing, for a market we've never taken. We can't take payments, make adjustments, or change services. They use a different type of box we don't know and different rates, so the bills look odd. Basically the only thing we can do is tell them their balance, and then transfer them to their local call center...

This has never been the way I approach a game. I suspect that is the difference.

It's like you just said you were frustrated with poker or chess because a game lacks narrative.

For me, if I'm going to interact with something, I want to interact, not do the actions in the necessary sequence to get to the next scene in the movie.

But I've always played more unstructured games since I was little, like Sim City, Civilization and Betrayal at Krondor. That probably was formative.

Simcity 2000 and Civ 1 basically stole my teen years. I don't expect a narrative out of games like that, but a game like Morrowind isn't like Sim City or Civilization. An RPG like Morrowind where all you really control is the character will live or die on its narrative.

To be honest, I'm okay with a lack of story surrounding the character you play, but I saw no reason for the character to pursue the story. There was no reason given for him or her to care.

I used to get things populated as cheaply as possible until the city was fully grown and then raise taxes and start renovating.

    I think. It's been a few years.

Do any of the Sim Cities allow players to inhabit a common area to build cities? I think that would be fun, to build a city and govern it one way, and then to look across the river and see another city, and it's a nightmarish dystopia with death squads charging down streets in black vans.

The largest city I ever made was in SC2000. I hit 1,000,000 people and pretty much put the game away forever. No SimCity has ever been as fun as 2000.

It was partially my goof, I used too much water (apparently) when I cooked the rice. I had to eyeball it because I ran out of long grain after about half-a-cup and had to mix in Jasmine to make up the difference. Considering I had two different kinds of rice in there and it didn't come out all uneven I was rather pleased.

Onion (one green one white) with a red bell pepper and three huge cloves of garlic sauteed with chicken seasoned with about a tblsp of chili powder and dashes of hot sauce and oregano with three small pickled chiles, and some crushed red pepper flakes. With red beans, diced tomatoes, and rice.

    Came out pretty well.

    EDIT: I FORGOT TOMATOES DURR

Ah, well then the real difference might be that I don't have a lot of disposable income to spend on games. I buy one RPG and play it for a year or two. So I need high replayability.

All I'm really looking for it an escape so I can go to a world and raid tombs, wield swords and cast spells. The world is the attraction.

For me the main plot line is a drag, except that it is usually a more interesting series of quests. If I do the main plotline then the game is over, and that is kind of antithetical to why I bought it to begin with. I found the 6:47 to win video very entertaining but totally incomprehensible as a use of the software.
