Yeah my concern is with being boring to fight against. I wasn't planning on taking the speculum, so that won't be an issue. The army is wizardless, so I think taking the altar for the lore of light spell and extra magical defense for my general is acceptable.

I gave my Empire army to a friend! Now I just run around with Hydras and ASF Executioner's Axe.

If you're not running with Dispel Scrolls I'd pretty strongly suggest having 2 Warrior Priests and an Arch Lector (and maybe take the Casket). That'll give you 5 Dispel Dice and no scroll, which ain't great but isn't terrible. It'll also let you put some pressure on in the magic phase.

Yeah that's what I've been doing, I lack a little bit of punch though, and I think the altar would help with that.

So today I was looking at Beasts of Chaos to see if I could make an army that didn't rely on Morghur to win (bescailly, use a Doombull and throw Minotaurs out there). At some point I realised that: A.) I was building an OK army and B.) BoC models are ugly anyways (also like an OK army). I don't think it can be done.

Beasts and Ogres are both ugly, but Beasts are just downright...boring. Ogres at least have some personality.

To be fair, that's only the Gor/Ungor units that have that problem. Still, you look at what 12 points get you for Beastigors and you just have to laugh. I'll admit, though, that the statline on a Doombull ain't bad:

    M6 WS6 BS3 S5 T5 W4 I5 A5 LD9 for 180 points. I'd pay for that line in my DE army.

EDIT: To compare, a Dreadlord is:

    M5 WS7 BS6 S4 T3 W3 I8 A4 LD10 for 140, so:

    M+1 WS-1 BS-3 S+1 T+2 W+1 I-3 A+1 LD-1 for 40 points. Of course, the Dreadlord has about 1000000 times better mundane and magical options.

Okay, lets try to get this post right this time: the problem is, if they run into skirmishers or the flank of a unit (depending on the size) they rank 4 wide and get no CR. They have some issues.

Yeah, there's the problem. The swap to 5 wide ultra-fucked them. They took it harder than any other army from that change, and they're the last army where something's being done about it.

It depends on how many can reach. If you have only 4 that can reach, your frontage is 4. The other issue lies with the ambush itself, they're going to usually be a good distance from your general and their leadership is 6. My Harpies have a leadership of 6; if someone looks at them wrong they're off the table.

K, so I re-read the rule... If you're basing up against something where you would normally go smaller than 4-wide, as skirmishers (such as a single 25mm model) you go 4 wide instead, thus no rank bonus.

Against anything else, you base as normal for skirmishers, meaning "as wide as you can". If that's 5+, you get your rank bonus up to +2 for being raiders.

One thing that always annoys me; hardly anyone ever ranks skirmishers up properly, especially against other skirmisher units. You're supposed to move the nearest model into BTB, then move the rest of the unit into the same line as the first one, unless they don't have enough movement. Then the enemy moves his skirmishers up in line with this first model charged. The ideal formation, for a charge from about 2" (in a forest, say) is one long line with no ranks at all, unless you run obscenely large units.

blorcs are well worth the points as long as you run 2 other units of regular Orcs. Cause normal Orcs are boss as is. Also on a side note I love me some trolls, just baby sit them with your general or keep them clsoe to him and they tend to wreck shit, vomit attacks vs anything with armor is awsome.

Dude, did GW realize that the Empire Battalion Box is as great a deal as it is?

You get 20 State Troops, 10 Hangunners, 8 Knights and 10 Greatswords for like $105 before tax.

    8 Knights = $35.00
    20 State Troops = $44.00
    10 Handgunners = $22.00
    10 Greatswords = $41.25

    Total = $142.25

    Total savings = $37.25

I mean, Jesus Titty-Fucking Christ. Of course, this is all because of the knob-slobbing price on the Greatswords. I know that the previous battalion boxes were supposed to be decent deals, but come on.

On a good note, if anyone were looking to start Empire I'm sure you could do much worse than buying two battalion boxes and rounding that out with characters and warmachines, and perhaps one more box of State Troops to get a detachment.

As a matter of fact, could anyone let me know how many points you could get out of the two boxes, assuming one unit of Swordsmen, one unit of Spearmen, and that one group of knights is Inner Circle.
