Deathwatch ep 2

You play as Jack. Jack is a chain smoking biker badass with a chainsaw arm.
Jack is the hero of our story. As testament to this fact, he has a giant chainsaw attached to his arm. Ash Williams may have done it first, but somehow Jack manages to shed more blood in one level than Ash did in all three of his movies.

Jack is a competitor in Death Watch, a city-wide game show. Not unlike Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Running Man, the grand prize in this game show is your life, but only if you make it to the end.

Fortunately, Jack's chainsaw arm helps even the odds, as does is ability to impale his opponents upon road signs.

I am really excited for this game. It has the potential to be the No More Heroes of 2009-- a fun, brutal, goofy stylized and awesome game for adults with sweet controls. This game seems to be Running Man meets Itchy and Scratchy meets Sin City and it looks amazing!

Controls
I remember reading that someone enjoyed the controls, but I can't remember where I read that.
So here's the deal with the controls:

on the Nunchuk side of things, you'll control Jack using the analog stick, with the Z trigger being your jump command. As you run through the 3D environments, the camera will stick behind the main character in a fixed position, so if you run backwards you'll now be running towards the camera. To shift the camera back behind Jack, all you do is tap the C button and it'll reposition itself instantaneously and you're right back to looking over his shoulder again.

On the Wii Remote, you've got the main punching action on the A button, and the chainsaw attacks on B trigger. Attacking with the fists is a simple "tap, tap, tap" on the A, but if you want to pick something or someone up, you hold the A button down. As you're holding something, Wii Remote or Nunchuk controls come into play: waggle the nunchuk while holding an enemy and you'll headbutt him into submittion, for example. Chainsaw attacks are motion sensitive: hold B and swipe up and down or side to side for different cut swings.

There are contextual Wii Remote motions: when you're alerted, you can waggle the controllers to perform a specific finishing move that'll send the bad guys to a very brutal death...or at the very least, close to one.

I will update this OP as I get more info. I need to find vids somewhere else, I can't get the IGN vids to in-line post.

I wonder if this guy saw the GoW commercials, saw the Chainsaw bayonet and thought, what if I made a game called Mad World and put the bayonet on the guys arm?! NEW GAME!

That's my cynical view on this situation.

Could you guys comment on the game instead of whatever the hell you are doing, please?

IGN is doing a month-long Madworld thing, supposedly with several updates a week.

If you click around the Madworld official site, you can find wallpapers and maybe other stuff. I found the wallpaper last week and haven't clicked around the site since then.

Madworld looks really really good on the screens in those Death Watch vids. Probably not actual game play on those screens though.

I'm excited for the controls. They seem to follow the same formula as No More Heroes, which I thought had really good on foot controls. I enjoy a bit of waggle action. A button for basic attacks and B to pop the chain fist sounds pretty good; B+wiimote swings for different attacks sounds good.

What happened to Proops and the other guy being the commentators? Are they still going to be doing in game commentators? I haven't heard a lot of in game audio, but the Death Watch hosts being other dudes is kind of strange. I guess sports games have commentators "down on the field" and up in the box though, so maybe they are still on board.

I really enjoyed the first Viewtiful Joe, up until the boss rush thing. I never did beat the fire lion guy. I spent weeks playing it for a few hours every day. And since I never beat the first one, I didn't allow myself to buy any more VJ games. I love the shit out of that game though. Art style, controls, everything.

I need to get God Hand some time. And Okami.

Is it wrong that I am already hoping for bonus content like different skins or characters to play as after you beat it? The Viewtiful games and Godhand seem to have a decent amount of extras. I think even completely different characters in VJ, not just new skins/costumes/"characters", but completely unique characters to play as, with different play styles and everything.

So. That is an interesting art style, to say the least. Interestingly good, mind you. I also get a strong Viewtiful Joe vibe, which is definitely a plus. In addition, while I do believe objecting to some sort of bionic hands with retractable chainsaws would just be stupid, I can't help but wonder why this is exclusively a Wii title.

Obviously, if this runs on the Wii, it would have no problem running on a PS3 or 360. It looks like the controls are the standard unnecessary translation of perfectly functional normal console controls into aggravating Wii controls, so the Wii motion controls aren't a necessity. So really, what is the reasoning of this being a Wii exclusive? Does Sega simply enjoy limiting their chances at easy profits?

Aside from that, nice to see the Wii getting a much-needed game that isn't a Nintendo franchise, shovelware, or doesn't look like crap because of the devs deciding to dumb down graphics instead using some style and creativity. Hopefully this sells well so other devs will be encouraged to come out neat new games for the Wii.

It's more than likely that developing a PS3 or 360 version would drain more money than it would be worth in the end.

What? How do you figure that? The PS3 would require a good bit of effort, but in terms of architecture and processing methodology, the Wii and 360 are fairly similar. They're both effectively specialized PCs (the PS3 is different because it has that Cell processor devs hate to work with). It makes a lot more sense to make the game multiplatform with a little extra effort than to just forego an easy port entirely. It's a much different situation than devs trying to figure out how to get games meant for the PS3/360 dialed down enough to work properly on the Wii.

Sega might just be holding off to see how the game fares on the Wii, though, and I can understand that hesitation. This is a new IP, after all. If it takes off, then they can risk porting it elsewhere. If it fails, they can cut their losses. Mostly I'm just happy to see a game for the Wii that I actually want; it's been a while since that happened.

The difference between the cost of developing for the Wii and the 360 is less to do with the coding, and more to do with the asset generation required (which needs to be done to a much higher level on the HD consoles). That's why 360/PS3 games are developed in parallel, and Wii games aren't - because the assets (models, levels, textures etc) are portable between the two.

edit: also, this is basically the spiritual successor to God Hand, right? That wasn't exactly a stellar performer, and it's arguable that it's being treated as much as a prestige project as an anticipated moneymaker, to raise Sega's profile.

Furthermore, it looks like it was designed from the ground up to fill a specific gap in the Wii's mindshare, as a "fuck you Imagine Party Babyz" - this has a relevance on Wii which is simply not there on other consoles.

Heh it's entirely duplicable, you just don't like the idea. It wouldn't be as fun or tactile, but that's not what he said. He just said you could control it on something else, and he expressed a dislike of the way the wii works. There's no need to get so defensive about it, it's just a difference in opinion.

No idea whatsoever. Not the first time I bought a console for one game. I got a playstation on a whim to play mgs1 after seeing the cover of mgs1 in the shop. I got a ps2 for tekken tag tournament. I got a ps3 to play tekken dark ressurection download.

Yeah telling me I should buy a console for more than one game is probably a lost cause at this point.

But seriously, I don't know what I'd get. Wii has even worse problems pricing wise than a ps3 in australia. At least I can wait for a ps3 to come down from 120, but Wii? Always the same price. Always. Specials? Ten dollars off. If I'm lucky.

Controls like those for Boomblox would not translate well to other consoles. For Madworld, the controls are simply "this waggle"= "that attack". Nothing they've shown for this game so far couldn't just be a coded to a button (or buttons, in the case of alternating button mashing) instead of a controller motion. The GC and Wii versions of Twilight Princess had the virtually identical attacks but used completely different controllers. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever that translating waggle into buttons would be any sort of stumbling block for this game.

Anyway, does someone know what the length of this game is supposed to be? I have yet to play No More Heroes, but that's largely because I have every intent of buying it. However, NMH is only supposed to something like ten hours long so I've been looking around for a decently priced copy. Dropping 50 bucks on a ten-hour game is just not happening. Ditto for Madworld if that ends up being the case.

Looks like a lot of fun. I'll be supporting this (a) because it's a new IP and a risk (b) because it's something quirky and cool (and mature, sure) on Wii and (c) because I do think it's something that would work best on the Wii and would be hard to duplicate elsewhere. Okay, you could do the graphics and some sort of similar controls on the other consoles, but that's not what it's about. It's hard for me to explain, but for me, I just feel like something quirky and over-the-top like this makes sense for the Wii, the way No More Heroes did. Yeah, that could have been on any other console, too, but it just worked for the Wii, for me. Probably doesn't make sense.

Sure, it's not 1:1 or anything, but it'll be fun to just go nuts with waggle. I feel like it'll make this game more fun, because it's all about the combat.

Previews sound solid. Hope it's a blast.

Have you played a lot of Wii games before? I have a hard time imagining Wii-controls being duplicated on another console. I think the waggle/motion stuff is fun and very immersive and natural, if done properly. I don't play a lot of cross-platform games, but I enjoy the Wii controls a great deal and cannot imagine most of my favorite games without.

Console exclusives happen, and it rarely has anything to do with what is or isn't possible on the hardware.

I think just pushing buttons would take something away from the gameplay. Slashing with the Wiimote to make Jack slash with his chainfist looks very immersive; in much the same way that swinging the Wiimote to make Travis Touchdown finish someone off was.

We haven't seen anything about length yet. The IGN guys have played exactly one level and one boss fight. We don't know how long it took them to play that level or how many levels there, or if there are new game + bonuses or anything yet. We know what the game looks like, what its controls are and some of the characters in it. Scarcely a mention of difficulty, which is odd. IGN did say the boss they fought stomped the shit out of them repeatedly, but nothing about regular level difficulty.

I spent about 34 hours playing NMH. I could have spent about 20, hell I maybe could have breezed through it in 15. I did have to re-earn an entry fee after completely blowing it on clothes and sunglasses. I started on the hardest difficult available. I think a lot of the "I beat NMH in 11 hours" people played it on the easy difficulty. I do not see why you would want to just blow through a game as fast as you can the first time you play it,

It is not yet time for us to go into detail about our experiences with the final version of MadWorld, However, we will tell you this: we're several levels in now and game completely delivers. If the addictive balance of fun, bloody fights and surprisingly compelling narrative continues, Platinum Games and SEGA will have a Wii Game of the Year contender on their hands. So if you've been fearing the opposite is true, stomp those fears to a bloody pulp and watch today's new movie excitedly. The game deserves your full attention.

Ha! I was about to post the same thing because I too played it last weekend at Comic Con.

This game controls really well and is a blast to play.
