A proposed definition for depression is a sustained recessionary period in which the population is forced to dispose of tangible assets to fund every day living, as was seen in the US and in Germany in the 1930s.

Are we there yet?

At 11:40 AM on Feb. 17th:
DOW down to 7,592.51 (-257.90)
Nasdaq down to 1,477.32 (-57.01)
S&P 500 down to 793.93 (-32.39)

Isn't this economy just wonderful?

It really hasn't affected my every day life in any noticeable way yet. It did hurt to see my 401(k) had lost more money than I put into it last quarter though.

I figure if it gets really bad I will have to stop buying all the new games that come out. Thank God for WoW in that case.

It's been a depression since mid september as far as I'm concerned.

A depression is when you are crying but don't know why.

Unless you're female, in which case that might just be a sign that you are on your period.

well, the recent stimulus bill was mostly money for government projects, so it's pretty much going to do absolutely nothing for the economy

    Define 'pork' please.

The government is spending money because consumers don't have any. The private sector is utterly incapable of circulating enough money to get the economy going again, so the government is forced to do so in its stead. The two main points in the bill are 'spend money, create jobs.'

to be fair, most of the shouting from republicans are gross misrepresentations of what is actually in the bill.

At one point, they were going "OMFG DO YOU SEE THIS 30 MILLION DOLLARS FOR MICE WHAT THE FUCK!"

And someone said "show it to me"

And they couldn't, because it didn't exist

No you see, we should follow the conservative model of government getting out of the way of big business. Big business knows how to manage itself, and it will never, ever shit where it sleeps so bad that it fucks over everyone. They'll only be as greedy as the market allows, and won't run off with piles of money and fuck over large amounts of average people in the process.

honestly, the job loss at some of these places has been a long time comming.

My dad works at a Ford plant and is a millwright (his job isn't in danger at all because they will always need him to fix shit) and they used the recession as an excuse to cut down on labor and finally install some robot labor thats been sitting in a back room for a few years.

I really wish they had decided to deal with the banks the same way they're dealing with the auto industry.

"Okay, we'll loan you this money, but in two months you're going to come back and explain exactly, to the fucking T how you're going to spend this money and how you're going to be profitable again or we're going to take it all back."

The money savings from 30 millwrights = the money saving of one executive fucktard, yet the suits seem to stay while the workers get the shaft.

Also, if you fire all the workers nobody will have money to buy your car.

A lot of companies are probably using it as an excuse to drop shitty employees.

Plus, stuff like the car companies, they figure that's a temporary thing - like 6 months temporary - because apparently that's how the auto industry rolls.
