The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I love how it's half as wide but twice as tall as the old one! Apple has redefined "smaller"!
I also love how the controls are now on the earphone cable so you can't use your old third-party buds, and how all navigation through the stored music is conducted with varying intervals of clicks of a single button! Just like morse code! I mean I thought my $400 Oakleys aviator shades were as retro as it got but Apple sure showed me!
I just bought one and I was so excited about taking it to Starbucks to show it off I got hit by a bus! It fucking hurt! Thanks Apple!
The 'button on headphones' is going to be a serious pain in the ass for anybody who wants any kind of sound quality out of it.
Though if you're using a shuffle chances are you're not an audiophile anyway. I just hate the stock buds so much.

It's music player that can only shuffle and has 2gb of space. Who do you think it's aimed at?
I seriously doubt anyone that buys one of these would ever even consider changing the stock buds, and why should they? It's not like they'll be loading FLAC or uncompressed 44.4 wavs onto it.

I read an article about an informal study a professor has been doing over the past several years that you reminded me of. Basically, each year he would play a variety of music, like classical, jazz, and rock in various formats and compression ratings and note which one the students preferred.
These days, student enjoy the low-quality mp3 tracks to the complete uncompressed ones. He blames listening with shitty earbuds (like the stock iPod ones) and the proliferation of mp3 as the format of choice for everyday folks.
I have a 2g nano. I like it okay. I don't think I would buy a shuffle. If I want an mp3 player with no screen I will buy a $20 one at radio shack and not pay apple taxes nor pay for functions that I think are stupid like not being able to use your own headphones.
i had my ipod mini for like 5 years, then upgraded to the touch a year ago. its pretty kickass. love watching tv shows on it during my commute, though if the psp was a little less bulky, i'd use that to watch stuff
I've got a 5th gen Video that still serves me well.
My brother has an identical one, only he installed RockBox on it because he "hates iTunes" because it's "too hard to use" and "doesn't support drag and drop."
He's kind of slow, I guess.
t lostwords: supposedly the PSP2 is gonna finally get rid of the UMD drive.

When my fiance wanted a shuffed for the gym I bought her a Creative Zen Stone. It cost half the price of the 1gb ipod Shuffle and came with double the storage space. then I bought some decent headphones and an armband thing to hold it in place and the total cost was still less than the ipod.

i have the 2nd gen ishuffle, and actually had the 1st gen back in the day too
it's great for the gym, or for my car, and doesn't cost more than im willing to spend
i dunno about the volume control, though
however, the (random/playlist/off) thing makes way more sense than the current (random/list) (on/off) setup

Where is Obs?
I want him to tell me that no one every really uses "pause" anyway.
I...I pause music all the time.
I listen to it at work and sometimes the phone rings.

Obs is the craziest mac guy out there.
Insisting that in the future iPhones will replace desktops, and that no one ever actually uses copy/paste anyway.
The shuffle is incredibly successful so a lot of people care about it actually. They've sold more than 10 million of the things.
to 10 million fags

i may be a PA fag, but i'm not like a fag fag

I don't see what your point is. Do you think Apple differentiates between fags and everyone else when it makes a sale? It's all money to them.
