My first computer was a 486. The first PC game I ever played was some PGA golf game where the sound was generated by our 28.8 modem.
\.
Was that by any chance made by EA? I still have a PGA Golf game by EA on floppy disk that I still actually play with my brothers on Christmas. To combat pirating the game, they had a thing where you had to look in the manual where there was a scorecard from the 3 courses and it'd ask you some question like "what is the yardage for hole 3 at TPC Sawgrass?"
i am not sure.
The only distinguishing aspect of the game that I can remember is that every time I hit a sand trap my modem would chortle "he can't be too happy about that one," in all its squawky primitive glory.
Oooooh. That's not a PGA game. That's Leaderboard Golf. I used to love that shit when I was little. "Looks like he hit the tree, Jim." My dad was/is really into golf.
Hah, shit. I used to love that game. I still quote it every time I play minigolf, hoping that somebody will recognize it. So far nobody has, but what a glorious day that will be.
wish they'd there was a frontline force source. that was good times. so good in fact that valve took some of their maps and made them official TFC maps
I miss Natural Selection. Except, of course, playing as the marines and having a commander who is both A) an idiot and 13 years old. Other than that, though, that mod was awesome.
I never played AHL but I fucking LOVED AQ2.
A mod that lets you bleed to death and break your legs from falls yet still move at 1,000 miles an hour through strafe jumping. Give me more. I actually had a bit of a spin in it again when Quake 4 came out and I got a free copy of Quake 2. There were some servers still up in AU and I got my arse kicked pretty hardcore.
E: People still play NS vsove, in Australia there are generally a couple of servers with players in them during peak hours (this was 6 months ago or so though I don't think much will have changed). I even saw a couple of my steam friends playing it a month or so ago.
Anyone remember the HL1 mod Existence? It was basically like The Matrix.
The Specialists
Action Half-Life
Huh? Neither of those were anything like The Matrix except for a few things. Existence was entirely influenced by The Matrix. TS and AHL were more influenced primarily by John Woo movies specifically, in my opinion. Existence was the Matrix mod.
So fill me in on all the Matrix that Existence adds.
Unless it takes place outside the matrix, same shit.
It was just the atmosphere and feeling of The Matrix rather than diving and epic shootouts. You and your team had objectives to go do and you were all dressed up in leather and trench coats. One of the guys looked like Morpheus. There was a cellphone you could use to do stuff. Shit, it was so long ago I hardly remember much of it, but if you saw it you'd know it's a directly inspired by The Matrix rather than action movies.

I loved this game so much, so so so terribly much.
I cannot wait for the sequel, I hope it lives up to the enjoyment of the first.

Was Existence the game with Agent Gordon, all wearing one of those olive Agent suits and whatnot? The server were always empty when I wanted to try that game. I remember the levels being enormous. Maybe they weren't that large, but they are in my memory.
I played the ever-loving shit out of AHL. It was really broken with the lupara diving, but it could be fun. I wanted to play The Opera, but I was too late. So I settled for AHL.
I remember really having a good time with some post-apoc mod. I can't remember what it was called. Wastes? Wasteland? I remember a 10mm pistol and a rusty katana.
I played Counter Strike obsessively for several years when it was still beta.whatever
Yeah Wasteland HL I think was that mod, it was a lot of fun but I don't think too many people played it.
I loved Front Line Force sooo much. It was such a great fast paced shooter. Global Warfare was fucking awesome too, where you'd be inserted into the level through an APC or helicopter, and you could get a LAW and shoot down the enemy's insertion vehicle so they had to wait. Made for some bad spawn camping but it was still sweet.
I think I played that with the same duder that loved specialists so much.
The cell phone gave you powers like super jump and speed, guns to maybe.
And if you got killed by the agent team you were captured, then your bro's had to break into the building that the holding cells were in and break you out.
Ah fuck that game would of been way tighter with more people.

That's okay, I am too.
What servers do you play on because right now I have just been clicking on random ones that look serviceable and everyone knows how great that is with online FPSs

Uhh, that's basically what I've been doing.
Looking for Team Deathmatch Hardcore servers and playing on the ones that give me decent ping. The only problem is that the one I generally play on (due to good ping) is a clan server, and the clan seems to be heavily populated with thirteen year-olds - lots of 'LOL YOUR MOM' jokes and comments about how great they are.
Also the occasional accusation of cheating - I'm usually not great, but when I get into a groove with the MP5 I can rack up some pretty impressive kill streaks. Of course, when I suck, I really suck - went from a game where I was 51-17 last night to one where I was 2-17 at one point.
But it's proving to be quite a lot of fun, regardless.

I actually did and I love the backgrounds, sprites, and sounds
Though I couldn't read that red text so I was a mite confused as to what was actually going on
[edit] Yeah, I'm totally the same way. I suck ass most of the time but occasionally I'll get like a five kill streak of headshots with the M16 and I'm all FUCK YEAH. I'm best with the G3 or whatever that semi-automatic rifle is, but I haven't unlocked that quite yet so I'm left using more basic weapons for now.

Heh, I unlocked it yesterday and realized that the reason I was so good with it was the red dot sight. Without it, I suck. But I'm working at it and hopefully will get the red dot sight tonight if I happen to be playing. The MP5, however, is my favourite gun just because it makes me feel like such a spec ops guy.
Golden M60 with deep impact and extra damage is glorious on hardcore mode, especially maps with a lot of indoor fighting. Wait for radar, aim vaguely towards blips, spray through walls, success.
If the thing didn't have god-awful iron sights it would be overpowered.
I stopped playing CoD 4 because I got a new computer and lost mine not a week after I earned it.

yeah i kept trying to get our graphics guy to make the text black or grey, but w/e
For the CoD4 players, I'll try to get my old server addy. Downside, it's european so ping aint great. Upside, it's modded to remove the hit indicator so you can't just spam m60 through the wall and know when you're hitting someone.

Didn't Valve give those guys the go-ahead?
Uh-oh I accidentally deleted my signature. Uh-oh!!

PS Do you guys remember brainbread and zombie master and all those other great zombie mods for HL1
Not very stable though.

It's a tactical combat game like JA2, but real-time (with pause) and way more intense
even better, it's like Brigade E5 but not nearly as shitty

In any case, Mario Galaxy is pretty much the perfect 3D platformer and if you don't like it then you don't have a soul.
Conduit's coming out soon
