Marvel Comics Solicitations - August 2009

edited May 2009 in Graphic Violence
It's time again for solicitations and wwtMask is nowhere around. The previews for August are out on CBR and Newsarama. I'll update this post once the full solicits are out.

Full Solicitations from Newsarama

Full Solicitations from Comic Book Resources

The Marvels Project and all of the 70th anniversary stuff looks awesome.

And we get a couple of Noir books that may be interesting compared to the shit that's come out so far.
Punisher Noir and Cage Noir

Neat Noir cover:

But this... I won't even show the image on the page. It's just... Perfect.

The All Winners has a version of that WW2 cap cover with Cap driving the motorcycle while Bucky gunned down gangsters with a Tommy Gun.

I love the Djurdjevic Thor variant for Incredible Herc #132.

There's possible spoilers (I think it's the whole premise behind Reborn) in the Marvel Spotlight: Summer Events solicit

Lots of interesting solicts, but the only thing I will be buying beyond the usual is the Death of Captain American Omnibus HC...assuming it is the natural continuation of the first CA Omnibus.

It sure seems to be. Volume 1 was 1-25 and Volume 2 will be 25-42, so you'll get a double up, but it works with the Death of Cap title.

    Something else I noticed.
    MS. MARVEL #43 & 44
    Written by BRIAN REED
Pencils and Covers by SANA TAKEDA
Ms. Marvel #43 70th Frame Variant by SANA TAKEDA
In Ms. Marvel #43: Karla Sofen's bad day gets worse as the summer's blockbuster Dark Reign event continues. WAR OF THE MARVELS Part 2 brings the Dark Avengers to the front lines.
In Ms. Marvel #44: Hope is crushed and the battle is nearly lost as the Dark Reign event continues in WAR OF THE MARVELS Part 3! As Karla Sofen faces an unbeatable threat, the legacy of Ms. Marvel hangs in the balance.
    32 PGS.(each)/Rated T+ ...$2.99 (each)

I would say, if that wording is correct, it's probably not Carol back from the not-really-dead-fuck-you-Brian-Reed, and more likely Ultra Girl.
    HULK #14
    Written by JEPH LOEB
Pencils & Wraparound Cover by IAN CHURCHILL
    Variant Cover by IAN CHURCHILL
    Variant Cover by ED MCGUINNESS
It's CODE RED VS. X-FORCE. Who is Code Red? How about Red Hulk. Deadpool. The Punisher. Elektra. Thundra. The Crimson Dynamo. What terrible secret could bring this group together -- only to run headlong into the deadliest team of X-Men? All this -- and wait until you see RED HULK VS. WOLVERINE! Superstar scribe Jeph Loeb is joined by art team Ian Churchill and Mark Farmer as the epic saga of the Red Hulk continues!

:( Yay. Loeb gets to ruin perfectly good characters. With a stupid team name.

I'm tentatively bolding The Crimson Dynamo as a perfectly good character because he was cool in the quasi-opening arc of War Machine that started in Director of Shield.

    Overall:

UC Avengers and UC Spider-Man, a new Mark Waid arc in ASM (I'm probably going to skip the Dark Reign arc), the end of War of Kings and Destroyer, an issue of Deadpool for every week (two ongoings and a limited? seriously?), Death of Cap Omnibus, Messiah War Hardcover, Ghost Box hardcover, Iron Fist Vol 5, X-Men First Class Finals TPB, Thor vol 2 TPB, Exiles Ultimate Collection 2, and Ultimate X-Men Ultimate Collection 3.

Damn. That's a lot of awesome. More awesome than I'll ever be able to afford.

Well Rogue was wiped clean again, right? She always has to drain one person completely and retain their powerset on an ongoing basis... First Ms Marvel, next Sunfire... from the cover perhaps that person is going to be Ares o_O

Greg Pak is taking over Incredible Hulk with #601. So it looks like we have 2 Hulk books, one that is good and one that is bad.

Yet Incredible Hercules is still going on piggybacking from Hulk.

The number logic to get Hulk to #600 is bullshit, really.

Hm, I suppose I may have been misinterpreting it. I was wondering if it was a quasi-spoiler for Legacy, which I think we've talked about before. But you're on trades, right?

Based on the cover and the solicit for another X-book it seems like she just grabbed Ares' power.

Maybe. But really a decent writer can't bring her back fast enough. At least I think she'll be in X-Men Forever, so that's my little bit of bottled hope that I keep grasping onto like it's the one true ring.

Why does Loeb get to mess with Deadpool? Why does he get so much free reign? I just... I just don't understand. I mean, when was the last time a Loeb book sold because of Loeb? I mean, last I recall in the past few years he's either been on a book that would sell regardless of whos put on it (Wolverine, Ultimates) or he has a superstar artist backing him up (Hulk, Ultimates again). It's maddening to see him continue to write books and then get to use characters I actually give a damn about.

Because Loeb is careful never to write anything that isn't a major event or an already big title we never get to see how much his name sells by itself.

Technically it isn't late yet because it hasn't even been solicited. I'd rather this happen than constantly shifting solicits but I can't believe it will take McNiven almost half a year to draw this thing. It better be the best damn thing he's ever drawn, and judging by how fantastic the art of OML has been so far, it might be.

Is that what's taking so long? I noticed a new wolverine in the stands a week ago and was kind of shocked to see it was by Jason Aaron (and it was no longer the Old Man Logan arc). I guess now I know where its ending.
