Man this sucks. Michael Jackson was a huge star, he was the biggest thing since Elvis and the Beatles. I grew up when Jackson was the man.

MTV is playing Thriller right now.

I dunno Jackson was huge during his peak, but I'd say an artist like Johnny Cash who kept fame up until his death and crossed genre is more on par with Elvis and Beatles.

    Sales wise though.

Also as far as musical/performance innovation, I'd easily put him in there with Elvis, the Beatles, and Cash.

True sales wise he's a monster. But you can't always rate quality on what sells, or longevity. I mean Titanic had bigger sales than Shawshank, doesn't make it a better movie.

That and the only people that gave a shit about Johnny Cash up until he covered that terrible NIN song were our dads.

Unless you lived down in the South then your dad probably didn't care either.

    EDIT

Man. I've made two terrible TOTP posts in a row.

Noone gives a shit about Johnny Cash, MJ was a living icon of music who is still revered for Thriller alone, Michael Jackson is bigger than Johnny Cash or the Beatles.

Well, if you look at the pattern, God seems to be killing off celebrities by the decade. McMahon from The Tonight Show in the 1960s, Fawcett from TV in the 1970s, and Jackson from his solo work in the 1980s. So...Britney is the next likeliest mark.

Though Lohan wouldn't be a surprise at this point. It's kind of amazing how fast she's gone down the hole.

    This is pretty much true.

I knew maybe two people who had heard of more than Folsom Prison Blues before he covered Hurt, and then he dies and suddenly everyone I know thinks he's the greatest ever.

Not to take away his importance to country music... but at the end of the day, country music has raped itself into irrelevance anyway. Kind of a pointless visionary.

When you express them they stop becoming your thoughts and start becoming your public opinion, where others now react to them and sometimes are hurt by them. This isn't just an unimpressive justification, it's downright naive.

I've never had an opinion on MJ. I just love the music and appreciate that he made it. I don't know enough about his circumstances and I don't presume to judge people based on word of mouth. Which is essentially what newspapers are.
