The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
Actually I haven't seen it. Only heard about it. Something about a new interface and stuff.
From Gizmodo...
The PS3's newest firmware upgrade, 3.0, is now officially going out to all the consoles in the land.
Go to "System Update" in the XMB to get the update, which replaces the Information Board with an icon-based system called "What's New," plus premium themes, trophy displays, and a status indicator at the top that shows things like number of friends online and messages. Check it out and let us know of anything else you find hidden in the update.
I read through the comments so far, sounds like a lot of clean decisions about different themes and stuff. Like dimming the background when entering folders and whatnot.
Have any of you guys tried it out? What do you think? Tell us poor saps that have to work our sad little jobs during the day like "normal" people.
-I like the change to the time/date display and that they finally made it so the battery indicator doesn't obscure these.
-I guess I like the 'what's new' stuff but it isn't something that I needed.
-I really really really dislike the change to the friends list. Instead of how it was prior (icon, name, comment, and game, with transparent background) it is now that info on a bright gray box. For one, this clashes with most themes, and for two it doesn't have enough contrast so it's hard to read the names. Also it's balls ugly.
Haven't really played around with it yet. My girlfriend really likes that the base theme has glitter now.
Nothing new realy. And now you can't turn off the ticker but at least it's not slowing down the interface. Realy everything they did with 3.0 is cosmetic.
Is it just me or does getting into the Playstation Store require an extra step now?
Nothing really revolutionary going on though that I can see.
Only if you're accessing it through the Game/Video columns. Doing it through the PSN column is just like usual.
Anyway, I'm not sure if this warrants a thread of its own but here's my impressions that I posted in the PS Store thread:
Good things:
Animated backgrounds
Rearranging of the clock, etc.
What's New is a lot better than the info bar
Bad things:
Enormous text
Ugly grey backgrounds on the friends list
No new avatars
PS Store under Game/Video is annoying
It's the usual Sony update; 2 steps forward, one step back. Hopefully in the next update they'll get rid of the grey backgrounds, let you select your font size and let you choose whether you want the PS Store to be everywhere. New avatars will hopefully be added pretty soon as well (they shouldn't need to be part of an update).
Anyway, I've noticed one other small 3.0 addition that I like. When you're scrolling through a list quickly (like a trophy or friends list), a little bar will appear on the side to show you how far you've gone through it.
Also, you can get the animated Afrika theme for free on the Japanese store. It's awesome.
did anyone else have problems getting into the playstation store last night? I couldn't get logged in at all. Keep in mind I have a launch 20 GB PS3.
Also I still would have liked it if they would add manual sort of games and/or sorting games by full version and demos.

With the huge font size and unnecessary changes to the friends list, this update feels like a step in the wrong direction.
Also, I miss the game start sound. It was a nice little touch that provided a tiny bit of positive feedback, rather than just dumping you into the empty void of a blank screen for several seconds.
What's with the huge font and ugly gray background on the friends list? Also, how hard would it be to put controller battery info inside the new information box? Have it rotate info - number of friends for a few seconds, then battery info for a few seconds.
The audio multi-output is a great feature for me, it's absolutely perfect for my setup. I like some of the UI changes - the time not being obscured by the battery indicator is good and the background blurring when in menus looks nice. I hate that it has that "What's New" thing focused when it boots rather than my game though... I need to see if I can change that. The friend list change seems dumb, and I didn't notice anything else that mattered.

Wait, I missed that. You can output to multiple audio sources now? Like both Composite and HDMI?
I haven't downloaded this yet - does it finally let me sort my PSN games in alphabetical order? Or make folders to put them in? Or anything more than "descending order of last play time"?

I'm pretty sure you already could make folders.
I know I could in the pictures section. Must have missed it in the game section. Thanks!

Uh...you could? If you're not mistaken, I've missed this.

Yes. There are some restrictions, but you can do PCM 5.1 over HDMI and stereo over the other connections (I'm using composite) at the same time.
So people are really melting down over this in places. I don't get the rage at all. The font is a bit much (I actually don't mind it, but I can understand saying it's too big), and the grey boxes are meh, but really? Eh, nothing sensational, bad or good.
Although, did (Near universal) Background Patching still make it in? I thought that was a part of the update and haven't been able to check it out yet.
Also, I think somebody (Prof. Snugglesworth maybe?) mentioned that there's a dynamic theme in the JPN Store that's for Arfika. Believe he said it was free, too.

Sweet. That works perfectly for me as well, since I've got my PS3 hooked up to both the HDTV in the living room as well as my monitor in the adjacent room. No more having to swap audio sources each time, hooray!
All my PSN games are in a separate folder.
You have to change the "Album" of the game to whatever you want the folder to be named.
It is a bit of a weird way to do it, but y'know... Sony.

Edit: @ Fatty
Left of the status bar is where I've seen it. At least when I check the XMB from being in something else. It's still only there for a few seconds before disappearing (like it did pre-update) so it's easy to miss, unfortunately.
@\Malechai
Well, that's true. I haven't seen a turn off option for it. But like I said, I like it, so yay for me. >.>
Edit the second: Huh. The Internet Browser seems a little faster/better. Maybe I'm imagining it, though. They did change the "Loading" Symbol to a spinning clock kind of thing, though.

It's been in there for over a year now. I've got my games sorted into; Best PS3 (my favourites), PS3 (the rest), PS3 Demo, PSone and PSP. It works pretty well.
Godammit Sony. I prefer the XMB so much over the NXE it's not even funny, but you still can't get basic functionality in there? Come on.
The XMB wasn't designed to add fairly large features like that after launch. Hell, Sony seemed surprised that they even managed to get in-game XMB working with most of the back catalogue of PS3 games...

It was basic functionality when the system launched, it's now just embarrassing.
It seems like some of my videos that were not playing before are being recognized now. They were MPEG-4 files that I was trying to stream from my PC, they did not work last week, but work great today. Could just be a coincidence maybe?

It sucks and I hate it... Only becase of the ticker thing in the upper right hand corner you cant turn off, it distracts the hell out of me. I actually left the orange ticker on in the past because it wasnt that hard on the eyes, but the new one for some reason just messes with me and I want it freakin' off!
Someone on the official forums made the following images of what they think the new info box should look like. It's more or less how I'd design a box like that, it's also miles above what Sony actually did because it actually displays useful information, and looks classy to boot.
I just want to disable the ticker and take the store off my Games tab. I hate tickers telling me a bunch of crap I could care less about and I don't need 2 Store Icons, 1 is fine thanks.

But more often than not, they seem to make things worse.
That said, I'll be downloading this tonight.

Blame EA!
Weird that they made this the big 3.0.

I love the LBP animated background in the video located here... http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=222283
I'm curious to see what else comes out of this.

Point Taken!
But I gotta say, really, I kind of like the new status bar. I don't see how it's anymore annoying than the Ticker that was there already.
Ah ha! I was partially right!
PSN/Steam/NNID: SyphonBlue | BNet: SyphonBlue#1126
The zoomed-in font is fucking horrible though, god knows why they don't give you the option to switch the size back.
Well the old ticker you could turn it off. This one though dosn't slow down the interface so realy it's not an issue.
