PS2 What am I missing?

SueveSueve Registered User regular
edited September 2009 in Games and Technology
So far I've been trying to build a Library of the absolute best PS2 games with a couple of random ones thrown (mostly really cheap finds) so I have something to play at college with the buddies etc.

So far I've got:

Hitman Blood Money (seems very strange, played 1st level, just seems so obtuse compared to other stealth games)
Black
MGS2 and MGS3 Sub
Shadow of the Collosus
Gladius
Viewtifull joe 2
Burnout Revenge
Okami
GTA Vice City
Devil May Cry 3

what am I missing that I should definitly get?

I don't really like slow RPGS to much, and I dont like Ratchet and Jak games

Thanks!

    Jesus.

    Just so, so many.

Like I could seriously list off over 100 great PS2 games.

In fact, I think I've done it before...let me search around...

Blood Money is an interesting animal. It's not so much a Splinter Cell game as it is a puzzle game where you murder people. You're given the puzzle pieces - disguises, distraction coins, silenced pistols, toolboxes, remote detonating mines - and it's up to you to combine them correctly and place them in the right order to kill the target without arousing suspicion. It rewards multiple playthroughs and lateral thinking.

I too am trying to define a list of the quintessential PS2 library.

What I just posted is my list so far, but it hasn't been "peer reviewed" by you guys. It's collected from various threads such as this but I would like opinions on what should be added to it.

It really does take a while to figure out how you're supposed to play it.

Anyway, I never really like these types of threads. By the end of it, every single game released for the system has been mentioned and you're back to square one.

I'm just happy you put Aggressive Inline on there.

It's a game everyone needs to play if you had any interest at all in the Tony Hawk series before it went to shit. It came out in-between THPS3 and 4 to little fanfare, but it's such an excellent and addicting game. Kickass soundtrack too.

    Eh, no.

    Not really.

Look at slash's list; it's long, to be sure, but nearly every single one of those games was at least reviewed well, even if not everyone in particular likes them. The PS2 really was just that awesome; so why not give the guy who's asking a little variety?

I actually constructed this list by taking a couple "PS2 recommendation" threads and one or two "PS2 hidden gem" threads from the past and compiled the recommendations into one list.

In other words, for each game I listed, there has been at least one person that has made a legitimate and supportable argument in favor of the game deserving of an all-encompassing PS2 library.

The only thing I wonder is if I missed some. I mean, personally, I'd add some like Shinobi, but I know that a lot of people hated that game and think it sucks, so I didn't add it.

One of the games I had heaps of fun with on the PS2 was the Virtua Cop:Elite Edition (Has 1 & 2) and Time Crisis 2, 3 , Crisis Zone
Obviously you need at least one GCon45 (two for awesome akimbo action)
I think there's a Point Blank PS2 collection disc as well

Honestly those lists, while cool, are WAYYY TO BIG!

I love adventure/action games, but shallower games such as the Sly games don't appeal to me. I like my good share of violence but I don't like Horror.

    So Do Like:

Adventure/Action/Acrobatic (i tried Prince of Persia, loved it)
    FPS
Wacky Games such as Viewtiful Joe 2 I like alot, but I guess thats action
I don't really have the time for RPGs to be honest though.

My favorite games of all time are:

    Beyond Good and Evil (GCN)
    TF2
    Company of Heroes
Super Mario and Super Mario 64
    Shadow of the Collosus
    Burnout Revenge.

    So

Is Burnout 3 worth getting if I played through Revenge?, and Could you guys try to shorten your recommendations down to around 5 of your personal faves, THANKS!!!

Have you not played the first VJ? Because VJ2 is okay, I wasn't a hater, but the first game is way better. So play that if you haven't, then the sequel, and then call the series dead.

If you like action, how about the DMC series? They have that trilogy pack thing I think and as long as you throw DMC2 into the trash on your way out of the store it's a pretty good deal.

What about Ratchet and Clank? It's like a cross between a platformer and a shooter game. You'll get big action sequences and then tricky platforming. The first game is kind of stupidly hard, but the others are way more balanced.

Burnout 3 is leaps and bounds better than Revenge. It was truly the best in the series until Paradise hit.

That said, I think you would really enjoy God of War, God of War II, and Mercenaries. The first two are my favorite straight-up action games by far: relentless, bloody, and amazing setpieces. Mercenaries is a very well-done open-world game with tons to do, but never leaves you feeling overwhelmed. Do yourself a favor though and don't bother with the next-gen sequel.

My five favorites on PS2, excluding ones you dislike:

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
    God of War II
Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner
    Gitaroo-Man
    Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4

Okay, assuming that important series (Devil May Cry, Grand Theft Auto, Ratchet & Clank, Fatal Frame, Prince of Persia, Sly Cooper, God of War) don't exist/you don't like them/you already intend to get them, here's 5 weird/awesome/must-have games:

    Psychonauts

    Odin Sphere

    Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven

Way of the Samurai (both are good, original is best)

    God Hand.

You also don't have ICO. No PS2 collection is complete without it. It is The PS2 Collector's Game.

Edit: ...I want to keep suggesting, so...
I'll say Fatal Frame II is very important, God of War 1 and 2 are very important, Sly 1 and 2 are important, Ratchet & Clank 1-3 are important (just read you don't like 'em - nvm), Prince of Persia Trilogy is important, Devil May Cry 1 is a classic and I think San Andreas is better than Vice City.

Also, the first level of Blood Money is like, a non-level. Hitman takes a ton of patience, but Blood Money is easily the best of the series.

Also, we love you for having Okami and Shadow of the Colossus. Now just get God Hand and you'll have the G&T-vetted trifecta of PS2 awesome.

Yeah I missed that, but it's weird because he says he likes Mario. The first Jak game is just another Mario clone before the platformer all but died. Ratchet is kind of the same thing, but more weapony.

My favorites are Ace Combat (04 or 5), Ape Escape (2 or 3) and Final Fantasy X.

Ape Escape is a platformer, so depending on what you hate about Jak/Ratchet, it may not be for you. Also, I don't consider FF10 a "slow RPG," but that is debatable.

Most importantly, action fan + PS2 = God of War.

    Thanks!

Games I have that you do not have that are not "slow RPGs".

    God Hand
    ICO
    Katamari Damacy
    Persona 3 FES
    Persona 4
    Rez

Personas 3 and 4 are RPGs, but you play a student in each game, and do stuff every day, so it's not "grind six hours to get to the next cutscene" it's "talk with your friends for a while and study for a test, and maybe grind a little on the weekend if the weather's nice".

Everyone has been focusing so much on this, they've forgotten the second part:
so I have something to play at college with the buddies etc.

Aside from Burnout I'm not seeing any multiplayer games up there.

Not that it's important, because Madden '10 and Halo 3 aren't available on PS2 anyhow, but if multiplayer is a concern I think he'll need more than just GoW to tide him over.

It was in Slash's uberlist, so I guess you're forgiven for missing it. :P

Also, OP hates platforming and fun for some reason, so it hasn't been reiterated.
