So I have gotten to thinking; what is the first use of the "twist" as a plot device? Oedipus was never a twist for the reader/audience, as we were always aware of the father / mother story (if I remember correctly)...
So when did the concept of hitting the audience / reader with a massive and surprising denouement begin?
Checking the Wikipedia, they show it to be a tale from Arabian Nights.
on that note, the first game I remember a double jump is Aladdin from Snes/Genesis
What about Metroid II on the game boy? You could double jump FOREVER.

Socket 939 (the one I have) Athlon 64 X2 4800+ processor: $400
harglebargle....
So buy a new mobo
Seriously. You can even show the wife that it will be cheaper. Win-win.
New motherboard means new processor, new RAM too. And If I'm going that far I might as well get a new video card, new power supply.... Whoops we're up to the $1300 system I would build if I had $1300.
So then don't upgrade anything whatsoever. For $400 you could have a new processor, a new motherboard, and new RAM. Actually it would cost less. In addition you would be able to upgrade more cheaply for the next two years.

SMB2 had double jump, didn't it?
No.
It just had really high jump if you hold Down before jumping.

Don't THINK so...
Luigi had floaty jump, Mario had normal jump, princess had hover jump... but I don't THINK toad had doublejump.

Nope. Toad's advantage was that he could pick up things really fast.

For $400 I'd only be upgrading to a slightly better system. By the time I have money to upgrade further, I'd be stuck with obsolete components again, and back in the same boat. I hate doing incremental upgrades, anyway. It just feels like such a waste.

Seriously man, that's like the whole "well the wii is cheaper but you HAVE to buy four controllers and a new tv to play it" argument.
You can get everything you need for the new pc for under $300 at most, which is still $100 cheaper than the processor.

And the Wikipedia comes through again. The first game with double jump was Dragon Buster, an arcade game.

They're cheaper in the short-run.
But I don't do them either because I wait until my system is bleary-eyed retarded.

Not one that will play BF:BC well though. That's what I'm aiming for.

Belated reply: there were uses of twists even with oedipus because the stock myths changed. Audiences walked in to plays based on these myths/rituals which confident expectations about what would happen. Oedipus finds out the truth, commits suicide, the end.
The first time they went into Oedipus and he walks off stage and instead of killing himself he COMES BACK OUT AFTER HE JUST STABBED HIS OWN EYES OUT HOLY SHIT everyone was probably shitting bricks.
How badass would it have been to have been in that audience? You'd be running to tell your friends. "GUYZ NEW DEFINITIVE VERSION OF THE MYTH IS IN EFFECT BUY TICKETS NOW."

the game was heavily weighted towards her getting most of the secret doors.

Hopefully this will work.

What's with you people and the past tense?
I still play SMB2 to this day.

LOL sexism. Light as a feather and weak.
Let's play Mario Kart or something...
You can beat SMB and SMB3 in about 30 minutes, each.
I think you can beat SMB2 in about 20 minutes.
SMW and Mario64 take some time though.
or maybe Super Mario Land on game boy, just because it was weird as hell and had side scrolling shooter segments
Unless you abuse the warps, no fucking way you could do it. SMW alone takes a long fucking time to beat completely.
Let's play Mario Kart or something...
The sub and the plane. I remember beating that one.
Yep. I liked the slower pace, larger levels, lack of a time limit, the feeling of exploration, and the flavor of the different zones.
the "no true scotch man" fallacy.
