So I have gotten to thinking; what is the first use of the "twist" as a plot device? Oedipus was never a twist for the reader/audience, as we were always aware of the father / mother story (if I remember correctly)...
So when did the concept of hitting the audience / reader with a massive and surprising denouement begin?
Belated reply: there were uses of twists even with oedipus because the stock myths changed. Audiences walked in to plays based on these myths/rituals which confident expectations about what would happen. Oedipus finds out the truth, commits suicide, the end.
The first time they went into Oedipus and he walks off stage and instead of killing himself he COMES BACK OUT AFTER HE JUST STABBED HIS OWN EYES OUT HOLY SHIT everyone was probably shitting bricks.
How badass would it have been to have been in that audience? You'd be running to tell your friends. "GUYZ NEW DEFINITIVE VERSION OF THE MYTH IS IN EFFECT BUY TICKETS NOW."

It use to be they'd come with a "free" game. When I first got a Genesis, it came with Sonic and Columns, and 2 controllers, for the same price as the deck+1 controller had. Now "bundles" are basically the system price + the games prices, or slightly discounted games prices it seems.
