This is how people use the internet.

I don't know, maybe you've seen this.

Apparently what happened is that some website wrote an article about some new login thing Facebook is doing. Somehow, this article ended up moving up the Google ranking until it was (one of?) the first result(s) when searching for "facebook login."

And now the comments section on the article is full of people who think they're on facebook's "new login page." It's page after page after page of people angry at Facebook for changing their login page to some new completely different thing.

These are people who don't know what the address bar is. They don't bookmark anything. When they want to login to Facebook, they just type "facebook login" into the address bar, and the browser automatically takes them to the Google results for that.

This shit is fascinating to me. I sincerely had no idea people did this. None of the paradigms or metaphors in my head apply to this type of user.

So let's discuss this, or people who don't understand technology, or whatever. I just wanted to show this shit to other people.

you're = you are
your = belonging to you

their = belonging to them
there = not here
they're = they are

    one time a guy called our call center (back when I still was on the phones) and wanted me to help him find something on our website. After half an hour on the phone, and numerous other problems, I found out he was typing the event he was searching for as all one word because "that's how you type things on the internet."

    It's like watching someone turn out the lights and having them all scream, "WHO TURNED OUT THE SUN" and "NEW SUN SUX, HATE THE NEW COLORS, BRING BACK OLD SUN"

    This was brought up earlier today in the jobs thread

    I didn't even realize at first what was going on, and actually had to have it explained to me

    I couldn't even comprehend the cluelessness, and therefore I felt stupid.

    I quickly realized this was like some kind of quantum level shit going on that someone else being so inept can make me feel so stupid and I got a headache

    This just makes me realize the degree to which most of my world is not nearly as natural and obvious and intuitive as I feel like it is. Almost everything I do during a typical day is wholly incomprehensible to a lot of people in the world.

    I get this every time I try to describe what I do to people who don't work in the tech industry.

    "Well, you know what operating systems are, right?"

    I should've learned something from all the years my Dad (also an engineer) couldn't describe his job to me.

    the only time I have a problem with users is when they think it's my fault they can't understand what a computer is and how it works

    it's ok if they've got some questions, even if I think the questions are kind of dumb. it's sort of my job to answer them, no reason not to be polite about it. if only they would have the same reasoning most of the time.
