When the world does not end on 2012 people will think the world will end 2033 because that is 2000 years from when jesus died. Then there will be a debate about how old jesus died, and then people will think the world will end for the next 10 years just to be on the safe side.
Folk's have been thinking the end of the world is around the corner forever. You saw Tycho's newspost about that book his mom had, right?

Wow, that armageddon online site has some real winners in the their forum.
Very serious I can 'see' the future every second of every day, but only a few seconds ahead of time. Example: take any six dice and throw them in the air. I can name all six numbers with 100 percent accuracy before even one hits the floor. Same thing with cards: I know the card before it flips. I don't and won't gamble because I know the numbers in craps and roulette before they hit. It's boring, trust me.
[actually I don't thing this is 'psychic' by any means. I think my brain works fast enough to calculate the odds on the cards, and figure out the physics of moving objects (like craps, dice, roulette wheels) that I can determine what will come up before the motion stops. I dont concider myself psychic and find these kinds of 'guesses' damn boring because I'm always right. That's not a brag, it's a fact. Boring boring boring]

Christina Aguilera is most definitely for the children
because children like playing in the dirt
and Christina sings about being Dirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrty
Dudes I am pretty sure Xtina made a lot of her money off people under 18.
yeah so do horror movies and tobacco manufacturers
"for" != "consumed by"
I can't think of a single horror movie I've ever seen that I wasn't prepared for by the age of 12.
you're fucked up in the head, though
Are you imposing an objective standard for normalcy?
the inexistence of a singular person who embodies what may be considered normal does not preclude the existence of behaviors or circumstances that may be considered abnormal
What criteria do establish abnormality?
significant deviation from a generally-accepted standard or average, i s'pose
Wouldn't that largely be culturally relative?
not in terms of physical and mental (which is also physical but i'm putting it here for clarity's sake) development that have biological standards accepted by the medical community
If a self-sufficient farmer living outside of society is autistic, isn't the appreciation of his condition as deviant only relevant to the purview of the observing culture?
Autism is a disease that primarily affects social interactions so I'm sure it wouldn't cause much harm to a lone man who survives on his own (through performing repetitive behaviors, no less) but that doesn't mean that autism isn't a disorder. Yeah, if you were an alien coming to earth and observing only this man you probably wouldn't see that it affected him much, but he's biologically impaired.
What about a 6'6" Norwegian having to duck through doorways in southeast Asia?
Does he only look weird because he's different than everyone around him? Well, sure.
What about an 11 year old with enough experiential reasoning to interpret the actions in porn and the support of a sex-positive culture to obviate repression mechanisms?
The inability of an 11 year old to comprehend sexuality isn't because of any "repression mechanisms", it's simply beyond their upper limit of comprehension at that age because he's biologically not ready to understand sexuality. I'm sure he could have the actions performed by the copulating parties explained to him, but he wouldn't understand the motivation or context. Why the hell would an 11 year old be watching porn anyways? Why would sexuality be relevant to him at a pre-sexual stage and why would his exposure to this possibly be a healthy action?
Repression mechanisms relate to the potential for damage you mentioned earlier.
i don't know what you're saying, here
Also, some folks hit puberty way before 11, and some folks develop sexual awareness before puberty. If either one of these people were exposed to porn in a sex-positive society, what harm arises?
If they're developmentally ready for it then none that I know of, aside from porn being a generally poor place to learn realistic lessons about sexual relations. This is true regardless of the culture, though.
Even if the autistic farmer is biologically different, doesn't the distinction of impairment only arise from an interaction with or contrast to a dissimilar society? Isn't his disorder relative to someone else's culture, not his own?
His disorder is not relative but the difficulties it causes him will differ based on his environment, sure. A person with terminal cancer is also diseased even if they do not want to live, a man with one arm is a cripple even if he never needs two.

Why sterilize someone when you can just kill them? I'm thinking about what the suicide rate would be among a group of people who had been forcibly sterilized, and I can't imagine it being anything less than fuckin' enormous.
yes, kill people to prevent their deaths

Sterilizing criminals because they might make bad people isn't a very good idea.
The dude who was Perth's first serial killer had a son and he grew up to be the head of the chamber of commerce for WA.
I once bet on red 32 in a game of roulette and won against the odds, therefore, it is reasonable to expect that when one bets on a single number in any given game that they will win!
man what would the world be like if a judge could hand sterilisation down as a sentence
like not for just anyone who commits a crime
but the real problem cases who just can't seem to stay out of shit or the ones you read about in the news who accidentally (or even purposefully) kill their kids or do crazy shit to them
it'd be too late for the kids they fucked over but at least they ain't doing that shit to no more kids
Ironically living in the state that broke off from Virginia so they wouldn't be a part of the Confederacy.
Not exactly. West Virginia was created as a state after the end of the civil war, because they didn't want to be part of the Confederacy during the war (but still technically were). It was not a big slave holding region and they had no real stake in the CSA. They're still shitheads.

My grandmother was married off when she was 12 and had her first child at 13. She had her first daughter when she 17 by a different man. She married my grandfather after her first husband died. Her daughter was married off when she was 13 and was spitting kids out not long after.
I wonder what they panicked over? No food, heat or access to medical care and education?
edit:
Forgot to mention that her first husband was 30 and my aunt's husband was 35 when they married.

What if a sex positive culture produced realistic, educational porn?
Even if the autistic farmer is biologically different, doesn't the distinction of impairment only arise from an interaction with or contrast to a dissimilar society? Isn't his disorder relative to someone else's culture, not his own?
His disorder is not relative but the difficulties it causes him will differ based on his environment, sure. A person with terminal cancer is also diseased even if they do not want to live, a man with one arm is a cripple even if he never needs two.
But how is it a disorder if there's no deficit of function in practice? It's just a difference. In downtown Atlanta, red hair is a difference, but in the Malleus Maleficarum, it gets people stoned and burned. Does that mean red hair is universally a genetic disorder, regardless of any cultural relativism?
there really isn't any real doubt to anthropogenic climate change, dude
unless you consider the Heritage Foundation or something to be legit in which case oops.
yes but time wasted arguing about the cause should be spent finding a solution instead
I say let the fundies have this one if it means we can move on and start saving polar bears
Well, y'know, a solution is probably dependent on the cause, unless we're going to tell them we have to reduce pollution emissions because of an obscure line in Leviticus about the proper number of flies to have on a cooked lamb.
Did you just compare autism to someone with cancer?
....
fuck sake...
I would rather have cancer than proper autism. You know the kind of autism that means you can't really do anything at all? The non-motherfuckers on the internet kind?
