aside from Harry, give examples.
The biggest one that immediately comes to mind is Dresden's mother. She's a
magic user who dabbles too deep into the dark side of it all and suffers the consequences, but her ultimate ambitions and motivations are left ambiguous. Her name is Lefay.
But then you also have Michael Carpenter.
The Raith family.
There are a few others I can't remember.

For ass-kicking purposes.

and yet, it's a real nick name that people with the name (first or last) of Murphy actually get called. I see no problem here. add a hint of realism, for me.

Best name Butcher came up with: Kincaid.

Basically, Butcher himself is like his character. Very little subtlety, lots of in your face power. I don't see this as necessarily a bad thing, but there were a few times when I just had to groan at the writing.

I'll give you the mother, but only partially. LeFay was a middle name, apparently.

I have a confession: I generally dislike Murphy and (sometimes) Dresden annoys me. Dresden in particular seems like Butcher tries way too hard to make him coy. He drinks coke all the time. How many fucking times do I have to read that line "I pop a coke out of the freeze-box." Also the chivalry thing is just stupid.

Micheal Carpenter. what would you call a guy who wield one of three swords that has a nail from the True Cross? A name that also evokes a sense of "This is a good and decent guy".
It was rumored that Butcher wanted Marsters for the TV show, but he wouldn't move to Toronto for it to happen.
Also a theory about the end of the Book.
It's gotta be Kincaid since Harry didn't hear the shot. The Theory I heard was Odin is protecting him with resurrection via the food that he made Harry eat in his office. This will also let him get out of deal with Mab. Because death releases the Energy given to him from Mab. Also the next book is titled "Ghost Story"

Has anyone read his other series? The Codex Alera? I just finished that the other night, only 6 books and its a finite series instead of ongoing, but its really good too.

Opinions vary but I really enjoyed them. They're not as good as the Dresden books but I liked them.

Loupgarou is an actual mythical beast. We have stories of them down here, although we pronounce it Lee-gar-oo and they're a lot more like vampires.
They fly around as balls of fire in the night and suck people. One way to stop them is to put a bowl of sand in front of your door and they have to count all of it.

here's a bit of honest, liquor-loosened discussion: i think genre fiction will dissolve in the face of better escapism in the form of film and videogames. prose will never die, it still has artistic functions - ie lingual poetry and storytelling at its most raw. but for big worlds to be lost in, interactive universes will be more satisfying, and for popcorn entertainment the visceral thrill of film will be always preferable. i don't know if this saddens me, as a writer, or what - but the more time i invest in becoming a writer, the more i read, the hollower pulpy prose becomes. for me there's still great joy in the craft of badass genre in film and videogames, but i struggle to find any in books
i guess i hope i'm proven wrong eventually
I can't shake the feeling that predictions of film killing the novel/genre fiction are as old as film itself. While it may have diminished the audience, genre fiction survives. I don't expect video games to be much different. If anything, video games encroach less on the storytelling territory of genre fiction due to the interactive nature of the medium.

Yeah, Dresden is definitely better, but I still really enjoyed them. I had just finished it so I figured Id mention it in a somewhat related thread, heh.
Back to Dresden, so is the tv show basedon the books specifically? Like, a string of episodes goes through the story of one of the books? Or is it just Dresden doin stuff? I might wanna look into finin that to rent or somethin.

It's still her name, and it's still absurdly obvious. Same goes for the other examples. Carpenter. Jesus. Michael. Raith. Wraith. Pale dudes. Come on.
Ok but then the 10 million dollar question is
Dresden's mother:
I just remember groaning out loud when he revealed her name.
Read 'em all dude. It's definitely a nickname.
and this is bible belt country. churches on every street corner etc etc.
might be a more catholic name?
I dunno. The books are really fun to read, but it's sometimes nice not to be hit over the head with what a character is immediately by their name.
Though, this is also supposed to be in detective pulpish style, and that's sort of a staple. Whatever, it doesn't really matter in the end.

I don't see how, it's an English surname

That's a dumb name, why isn't anyone kvetching about that?

What the hell?

And all the names are actual, stupid names!

ain't no reason to be reading it ironically
