That one Tyson seminar where he talks about the limits of knowledge, like when Newton decided that God must take an occasional active role to keep the planets aligned because he couldn't explain discrepancies in his formulas, does anyone have a link for that? Absolutely cannot find it

Why do you have to hate on it like that Kosh?

well, I'd wouldn't be as upset if it were named gadget porn weekly or popular wild-eyed futurists with boners for engineering jerking off all over each other or something

It's called Popular Science? Not exactly the MIT Physics Review Quarterly?

I dunno, I guess I just sort of resent the notion that real science is this super dense, boring thing that only intellectuals care about and that the layman is resigned to rubbing his dick on the latest missile system or whatever

Yeah, PopSci not so much, but I've been really happy that Scientific American (at least the majority of the online viewable articles) seems to be filling the gap between layman dick rubbing and dudes in white coats at a computer

But I try not to buy "science" magazines because they're full of ads for dick pills and pheromone cologne

so have powered suit armored with that (imagine it'd be lighter than metal armor) with like, mini-laser defenses to shoot down explosive projectiles

    not

    exactly?

    it's shock tension

i'm not going to get into it because i don't remember the specifics enough. but things that are dense but not solid like a sandbag.

the test i saw, the bullet stopped dead in the sandbag. the arrow shot through to the other side. remember-- a lot an arrow's power comes from its own physics in air. the twisting and torsion of the shaft.

whereas a bullet is pretty much a force as a result of an explosion behind it and that's it

Wouldn't an arrow be highly dependant on the strength of its marksman as well? Or even the quality of the bow and the tension of the string?

There are just too many variables to accurately say "arrows penetrate better than bullets" especially with a test of firing into a sandbag. Yeah in that situation an arrow might be a superior solution. But kevlar? Steel plates? Metal sheets? Hell even wood? Yeah I'd much prefer a bullet 9 out of 10 times.

edit: I know Futore was talking about specific scenarios especially with the idea of "gel armour" but this just reminded me of an argument I had with another person who said a bow and arrow beats a gun any day which still pisses me off to this day
