My only regret is Jon didn't touch on the civil liberties issues. That's where this administration most let me down so far.
If you're talking about gay rights issues, then that's your own fault because pre-2008 Obama agreed it was a state's right issue and not a federal one.
I'm not, though that sucks. I'm talking about things like government transparency and privacy rights and getting shit like Gitmo dealt with.
Wasn't the Gitmo thing more of a case of every single politician in america suddenly realizing that former afghani taxi drivers were criminal masterminds on par with the batman rogue's gallery and thus american prisons were not enough to hold them?
The real problem? the Justice dept has figured out all these guys have been illegally imprisoned and tortured for so long there's no way to legitimately prosescute them anymore
"Saltwater/supply side"? Saltwater as I understand the term is the east coast mainstream, closer to Keynesian.
You are absolutely correct. It was late and their was frustration drinking involved in that post. I meant to say freshwater/supply side. Thanks for pointing that out I feel silly. With the caveat that sadly Keneysian thought is being pushed out of policy circles in general as Britain and Germany are currently displaying quite ably.
There was a fun one I read about recently, a guy they were really glad that he plead guilty because otherwise they would have had to go through a fucked up military tribunal thing of questionable legality, and the entire reason he was being charged with terrorist charges was because he was fighting without a uniform (he attacked american soldiers, not civilians). The thing is, the predator operators don't wear uniforms while they're working so they had to rewrite the law so that the CIA wasn't committing war crimes.
Oh and the kid was 15 at the time he was captured.
I'm not sure how I would take the reaction to "Yes we can, but-" pause, then "BWAHAHA" in the President's face.
Other than that, I thought it was a great interview. Big fan of both the guys there. The conversation at least felt organic enough to flow in a specific direction that actually answered some questions and positions on issues.

Omar Khadr?
Yeah that is one fucked up case. Part of the guilty plea bargain is that firstly he'll be sent to Canada where he might get a real trial and that he can't sue the US government.

Most important part of the whole damn thing. Your president doth lol.
Anyone that wants to learn debate and especially how body language works when between two people should watch this discussion. 2 Brilliant people in that aspect. I liked the interview.
Uh maybe if you only watch the president. Did you actually watch Jon? He couldnt look Obama in the eye when he asked his questions or made a critique. He would constantly look down or away and squirm as he talked.
Now thats not to say most people wouldnt do the same thing in that situation, but he certanly a good model for learning to debate or body language. The president, however; did his usual excellent job. You can say what you want about the man, but he is a great speaker.

That's what Jon always does when he asks a serious question.
It's a mannerism, like Obama's occasional stutter when he's about to answer something.

So.. you agree that we shouldnt watch him to learn good body language when asking a serious question then? Say for in a situation such as debate and discourse.
Jon was almost right. Congress hasn't been timid about trying to pass legislation, but Congress/Obama has been timid about telling people what they have done and why it's good for the country.
Is there a particular reason why they've done this? I'm Canadian and don't really follow US politics but just based on the lack of news about their accomplishments, I went into that interview actually thinking that Obama et al hadn't really done much of anything. But when he talked about what they'd done, I realized I was wrong. Like he said, he wasn't done yet but what they have managed is some pretty heavy stuff and it just seems like it'd be smart to highlight that with the coming election.

For a number of reasons, Dems are TERRIBLE politicians. They seem to be of the belief that the people will see for themselves what has been done, and attribute it correctly.
One thing I'd definately ding Obama and Congress on was the horrible year of being unable to read the political climate, and pandering to the right trying to be bipartisan and weakening their own bills when everyone could plainly see that nothing was going to get bipartisan support.
Basically, the only thing I can see "timid" sticking on would be a misreading of all the pandering to try and be bipartisan. That and it's a good word to describe Reid most of the time. The actual content and intent behind the bills though has been anything but timid.
Terrible politicians pretty much. They let the GOP/Tea Party grab hold of the media narrative early on and then the "story" was that everyone hated healthcare reform (even if they overwhelmingly like each component of it...). So the Dems started to hide from what they had done instead of trying to regain the message. They haven't figured out how to counter the Tea Party, and it's just going to get worse after next week.
I still think Tuesday is going to go better for Democrats than people are expecting. Not well, but not a disaster. I think the likely voter model is off.

Self-righteousness is incompatible with coalition building.
That's really dumb. No, serious, that's so very stupid. About the Dems running away from the GOP, not that the Dems aren't going to be slaughtered. How do you become a politican when you're not a good politician???
I'm not sure why the dems running for the house dont have more ads of people in their districts helped by the healthcare bill, I know a couple who's child is likely to live a long and healthy life instead of a short and debilitated one because of it, and won't have to sell their house for the meds

Most of the ads I've seen in central Ohio is that the healthcare bill is bad and it will raise the deficit to a bajillion dollars and you will suffer - you will all suffer!
So yeah. Tough sell, on what's apparently a great thing.

By not being completely incompetent and having gerrymandered districts.

These are so annoying. I can't even watch non-DVR'd TV anymore. I have yet to see ONE positive campaign ad.

1) They're afraid of the narrative/Republicans. The general view is that the health care bill was bad, even if the stuff in it was good.
2) They cleverly constructed the bill so that most of the good stuff doesn't come on line until 2014.

Now counting down the months until those things come to pass and, especially if they're in power again, the GOP begins taking credit for them.
Wait, they already did that. Oh well, they'll just have to do it again. Good thing they tried to/successfully murdered Obamasocialismcare, and instead instituted The Patriotic Palincare As Directed By God And Jesus (The Holy Ghost Was Busy That Week).

First they came for the Muslims, and we said NOT TODAY, MOTHERFUCKER!
I think Obama's insidious plan is to have the dems lose the congress so they can kill the fillibuster before he takes over in 2012 and then they have unlimited power

Because they're limited to what's actually in the bill. Republicans are not.

Y'know, our modern political environment really makes me sad.

The difference is that real people have been helped by it.
Nobody has actually been killed by a death panel (a government death panel anyway, my mom worked for an offshoot of an insurance conglomerate once and her job was to come up with reasons to stop paying for people's respiratory conditions that sounded legitimate, she didn't last long there)

I would suggest that you avoid history as a subject matter.

Right now's not great, but we've had it much worse. For example, the late 1850s.
Should Jon Stewart have called the President "dude"?
It's not like the right wing pundits have called him far worse things, constantly, for the last 3 years
oh wait
That's freedom of speech, ronzo! What Stewart did was DISRESPECTFUL TO THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
Just like when Obama rolled his sleeves up in the oval office. TOTAL DISRESPECT.
Really?
...really?
