Not sure why everyone is all like "OMG IT SOLD OUT, I DIDN'T KNOW, GIVE ME A TICKET!!!". BYOC sells out EVERY YEAR (BigRed correct me if I'm wrong), and very early every year. PAX East last year was a fluke. It was stressed many times it would sell out, and to get your ticket(s) ASAP. BYOC was listed here on the forums as soon as it was open for registration, it was also tweeted from the offical BYOC twitter(@PAX_BYOC) and even the official PAX twitter (@Official_PAX) back on October 21st, and even talked about in the Unofficial PAX IRC channel. Now if you are going to BYOC, I would assume you have a computer and could check up on at least one of these places. If not, there is no point crying about not having a ticket. Just go enjoy the rest of the show in 2011, there is a lot of other things to do, and there is even the free play PC area, and then for 2012 make sure to get your ticket(s) ASAP.

PAX 2010 overall has had unsold BYOC tickets all the way up to the month of PAX and they even did at-the-door ticketing for Prime 2010. Maybe people got used to having all the time in the world to register.

This is from the PAX EAST 2011 FAQ:

Can I bring my own computer for the LAN?
Yes! But you need to pre-register first, so we can reserve your space--don't just show up at the event with a computer under your arm. Bring-your-own-computer registration will take place a few months after general PAX East pre-registration opens, and those who pre-register will get first dibs on BYOC slots. So when you pre-register, make sure to register an email address you actually check.

It appears as if they were going to email the folks who pre-registered. I do not see anything mentioned there about twitter or the forums. Maybe these registrants were unfamiliar with past events and practices. I know that I would be angry if I missed out when purchasing a 3-day pass in advance with the expectation of attending the BYOC. At the very least the FAQ should be updated to encourage people to go to the forums for more info. How about it BigRed?

Good thing I checked here back in October and was able to get in on time. I never expected to be able to register this early based on what I read from the FAQ.

Good call, and an entirely valid point.

For the next cycle we'll make sure the faq points people to the forums.

    So mistakes were made, NBD.

I'm just so surprised that out of 60,000 people, that there are only 216 BYOC Spots were made. I know that last year it didn't fill up, but I am still very shocked.

Its all good though, at least there are freeplay PCs, what sucks though if I want to participate in a tournament I have no legitimate way to warm up/warm up with teammates.

    Shit happens though.

Its not very surprising. We cant create a BYOC seat for everyone and I doubt it will get larger than Prime's BYOC room (around 400 computers, which still sells out). It needs to show that it can sell out for East (since this is only its 2nd year) since it didn't Last East. now that the demand is there for 2012 there should be more space. People will be left out no matter what. All you can do is get in early on it next year than lament about it this year. Kinda wasting energy on that cause nothing is going to change for this PAX.

    1) you couldn't practice with teammates anyway unless they also were in BYOC. The BYOC room is for BYOC attendees only, no guests are allowed.
    2) Why cant you use freeplay to warm up with teammates? Stand in line together to check out a few machines and go nuts. you should be able to get a couple matches in of most games that would be on the tournament within the time limit.

Honestly, the first part of that sentence makes it so that the second part shouldn't be there.
Why would they increase the capacity of something that didn't sell out?

Okay, this discussion is just running in circles. Yes, BYOC is sold out. No, there will not be more seats added or a paid waitlist. If you get lucky enough, somebody might cancel their ticket and you can get in, but I wouldn't depend on that for you and/or all your friends. Shocked or not, there's nothing that can be done at this point.

We understand that the PAX FAQ didn't point to the forums in relation to BYOC tickets and that will be resolved in the future. However, as it stands right now for PAX East 2011, there's just nothing that can be done.

This topic has now taken up almost a whole page of this thread. I think we can effectively wrap it up now.

Let's let others with questions regarding BYOC step in and ask without fear of their questions being lost in this circular discussion.

    Thanks.

Please be advised I am not attacking the staff for the amount of BYOC seats. If that came across like that than I will apologize.

I just cant believe the Byoc didn't sell out last year because if it did I am sure there would be more spots.

As I it's NBD, and now I learned for next year.

Hope everyone is enjoying the holidays & Winter. I'm still excited and preparing for Pax and BYOC.
I currently have L4D+2, MW2, Unreal 3, Shattered Horizon, Team Fortress 2 and Killing Floor.
I'm hoping to get Starcraft 2, Black ops, Hot Pursuit 2010, Rainbow6 Vegas and any other extremely popular title that might go for an extreme event. Are there a listed of expected tournaments?

If my PC isn't complete for portability I'll just bring my Alienware m11x R2 - since I haven't heard many tech savy enthusiast around. I rock the Astro A40s with a Logitech G9x gaming mouse - don't know what recruiting is like but I'm moderately good in MW2.

I know this probably a stupid question (considering I've already looked at the Pax FAQ) but conflicting information has caused me to ask what is going on. The Q&A on this thread states that the BYOC registration begins in late January (not October), so is this the same one or separate? Also, if it is the same one, I'd like to know why there was no announcement on the pax east site. and why such a big jump in the registration schedule (moving it from Jan to Oct).

These were answered previously in this thread.

There is no other BYOC reg, its sold out.

It went live in Oct because it was ready and we wanted to get it Live as close to regular reg as possible.

It was announced on these very forums and twitter. In the past its always done that way. Its only sent to paxsite or other means (email) if it doesn't sell out.

Yeah I know, I was the first one to reg to test the system when it went up. I usually buy a seat and just give it away to someone but I was having some money issues around oct plus due to the demand of BYOC this year I just omitted from doing what I usually do.

And since this is the way we have always done it... if you are really interested in something you should check on it often.

I am sorry there wasn't enough space for all the new people coming into PAX BYOC this year but its sold out. complaining about it isn't going to suddenly conjure up more seats. It sucks but thats the way it is. The only takeaway for the new peeps who missed Reg is to just check the forums once a week (Or you can follow PAX_BYOC on twitter and setup mobile updates on your phone) for next year after the PAX tickets go on sale for your best shot at getting in on this.

Again, please keep the thread on track. This is now going into sustained engineering mode to answer questions from those who are going this year.

Man...this sucks. I thought the event tickets were going on sale in January as well...I had a great time last year (loved playing 3D w/nVidia guys and the journalists) and my son and I had a great time but no-go this year I guess. Seems to me a post on the regular site was warranted as many don't have twitter and don't check the forums.

Last Year the TF2 plays was tons of fun. Some of the maps had some strange settings, but overall everyone had a great time playing, hopefully the few odd settings will be changed this time around, and there will be less complaning about map settings and more killing of each other
