Is there any point to trying to properly train a pokemon during the story mode? Or will all the random battles and what not throw it off too badly?
I find it way easier to just do it when the story is over. Getting the right natures is really annoying when you're trying to get through the story, and then at the end you can just breed new ones for the right natures, and you already have access to the good EV areas.
I see now that getting Feebas and evolving it into a Milotic has been made much, much easier. Kind of ticks me off after I spent hours fishing the same river over and over again in the older games.

So I take it the item Ring Target has potential for Trick shenanigans?

Taking advantage of auto leveling to check a Pokemon's IVs without giving them any EVs that would alter their stats.
It doesn't keep them at 50 does it? As in, if I take in my new team of newly hatched pokemon and it auto levels them to 50, do they stay 50 after I'm done or do they go back to level 1?
I haven't messed with Battle Tower or anything much

er, I can't find the route east from Iccaris to...whatever the next one is. There seems to be a lot of areas around that town that appear to be inaccessible completely, there's no sign any HMs help out at all.

Last pokemon of the first Subway Boss Battle and I lose Stupid subway. At least after running through the place three times I've amassed enough to finally buy a power item. 1 down, 5 to go

Go east from the Pokemon centre, down the stairs and under the bridge you turned away from.
The inaccessible areas are for when winter sets in.

Ok, thanks. Do I have to go do this relic castle stuff before progressing? Not in the mood to reset 100 times for a decent legendary yet.

Yes, the bridge is blocked off, you have to go through Relic Castle.
So yeah. Is there a good checklist of what I should be doing post E4? I've unlocked transfer (wish it was a main-menu option instead of a specific building though), haven't beat the E4 again, could do that I suppose.
I suppose finding that legendary that's roaming, doing the lostlorn event (with 1 of the 3 dogs), and getting the moth / hackasourus or whatnot is my next immediate goal. There's a trio of legendaries to unlock in game someplace too, right?
I went towards Black City, whereupon some girl in a tunnel asked me if I wanted to try a Triple Battle. Sure, I think, I beat the game, I'm ready for the rando-oly shit, did she just send out 3 Level 65 Pokemon? Chriiiist.

Wow, Route 10 sounds like it's straight out of a Layton game.
It seems that reports of easy trades for starters I had heard were false.
Everyone wants frigging level 100 legendaries, like I'm going to even *get* a level 100 pokemon EVER.

Those were Japanese players.
However circumstances mean that there aren't a lot of them on right now.
Put up a common pokemon for a starter. I read someplace that the Japanese GTS players use Audino as the generic vendor trash pokemon, not sure why. Anyway, the way GTS works is YOU make an offer and come back later, not the other way around. I think in all my years I've seen exactly TWO trades in GTS the other way around.
Speaking of GTS -- what the heck is Unity Tower? It's apparently connected to GTS somehow.
Edit: Where can I see Rufflet? I want to search on the GTS for one, but I haven't even seen one yet.

I've had maybe three trades that were reasonable through searching, I've had much more luck with depositing my own and naming my price.

I was not aware rotating and attacking were seperate actions, I thought it was one or the other which would have been dumb.
if this gen did anything it's open me up to team battles quite a bit, be it 2v2 or rotation
OHKO with my Simisear's Overheat. Very satisfying.

I'm wondering if that single-handedly shuts down a Double Team/Minimize guy.
Nope, they revert back to their original level.
If you have any more of those eggs, could you send one my way? I'm feeling a bit impatient to wait until later to catch one.
Nah, it seems to just be type immunities.
However, we still have stuff like Shockwave and Chip Away.
Nothing in egg format but have a few lying around at level 1 if you want one.
Lots. I'll hop online with one.
Cool, thanks.

Any good Steel moves period?
Need to go get Volcarona and the Hack-whatever dragon. Then it's all over except for the legendaries, the importing, and the evolving.
Steel is a terrible offensive type, so no. Earthquake on him, obviously. Rock Slide is useful, as are things like X-Scissor or Shadow Claw.

Two good Steel moves,
Meteor Mash
Bullet Punch
and mostly only for STAB purposes. Like on Scizor and Metagross.
I believe the only steel move he gets is Metal Claw. (outside of, say, Iron Defense and Metal Sound.)

As for Relic Castle itself:
Minor story spoilers
